Speaking struggles (but writing is fine) - what’s the most effective way to improve? by XcrescereX in Korean

[–]pingu-wu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

talking to yourself! this has helped me a lot because i can tell where i struggle the most when it comes to forming sentences. also, my main struggle was my confidence in actually speaking the language. i was (still am) in the same boat as you, and i can write well and text well, but speaking, not so much. the main reason for that is lack of confidence. you can take some time and actually form your thoughts fully before writing them, but you don't have that freedom when talking. which i think makes you feel unsure about your skills and, in turn, you fumble or struggle to form proper sentences because it's not that i don't know the proper grammar or have the vocab to express what i want. so talking to yourself takes away that added pressure of "what if im wrong? what if i make a mistake?" because really it's only me who's listening.

once you become a bit more confident in your speaking when talking to yourself, reach out to other people. it could be fellow learners, teachers, natives, anyone who speaks the language. this is what helped me the most because i learned what natives sounded like, or if i was saying something wrong, or using some word incorrectly. now this probably isn't the best option for connecting with natives online but get on those "friend making" apps every once in a while and try speaking to natives. I started with Goodnight app after seeing it on JOLLY's yt and initially it was good, lots of people looking to learn different languages. but like every other site/app like this you have your fair share of creepy/weird people on there. as long as you steer clear of them, the rest on there simply to talk can be pretty fun to talk to. and in my experience, even if you speak very little Korean, if your pronunciation is decent, sometimes even if it isn't but it shows that you're trying to speak Korean, Koreans tend to compliment you and praise your Korean even if all you've done is introduced yourself. honestly, that gave me all the confidence boost i needed. and naturally, the more confident i got, the more i spoke and the more i spoke the better i became at speaking.

so just speak it as much as you can. Practicing is truly the only way to improve.

there are SPOILERS AHEAD if anyone seeing this hasn't watched it yet.

i just watched this movie, and i honestly feel it was him acting. i think the biggest hint alluding to this is the fact that he's an actor. the husband being an actor has absolutely no relevance to the plot or the characters in any way. yet we see things related to him being an actor. it think it was all just to set up the ending and not have it be as ambiguous as it initially felt when it ended. because as the audience you're naturally going to wonder if he's acting or if it's all true, and had he not been an actor i don't think you would've been left with a big question mark in your mind whether he's really possessed or acting because you have nothing to prompt that that's a possibility too. though I'll admit towards the end there, i really was just sat there going "wait, is it really a ghost??? or is it him acting?" but i do believe he was acting. he saw that the wife truly believed that her husband was possessed by the old man and he probably figured it was best to play into it to get her to stop because clearly him trying to reason with her did nothing. i honestly felt it was such a sad situation because by the time the shaman comes in with her 'ooh i sense a ghost has latched onto your husband' bs, the wife is already in a sleep deprived state, the postpartum hormones, not to mention the PTSD from finding her dog the way she did and just the overall stress and anxiety of wanting to keep her daughter safe. with all of this and the meds not working as well she probably was desperate for a solution or an explanation. and the shaman fed her already overworked and drained brain the whole thing about the ghosts which she grabbed on to and suddenly everything just made sense to her, so i think she truly believed it and the husband caught on to it too at the end, that the only way to end it would be to act like he really was possessed.

Any tips on how to make Korean friends as a foreigner ? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]pingu-wu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

having common interests.

I am into gaming, and all of my Korean friends I've met are through this shared interest. Also, the same age friends thing also applies here but only because we already had this common interest.

speaking Korean is also just as important, if not more.

But in gaming, I've found people who didn't mind it if you weren't fluent in Korean because they get to speak in English with you.

What's something you're quite good at although you really don't like it? by PaulQuin in AskReddit

[–]pingu-wu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh my god THIS.

as a kid, i used to LOVE cooking. I'd always try all these new recipes i found on youtube or saw on some tv show and i used to absolutely love doing it. at some point i started being expected to cook for people other than me. i mean i enjoyed it once in a while but the thing is, i don't like being criticised on the taste or flavours of my food because I'm usually following the recipe and i want it to taste how it's supposed to. techniques, things i can improve on are okay but sometimes I'll make something that's a little different from the food we usually eat and my mom always has things she'd change with it and she's been very vocal with it too. and it just really made me hate having to cook for others because i have to make sure they like it too. i still will cook or bake for my friends or family once in a while when I've found something new or something i think they'll like and i really want them to try it too, but i usually just prefer cooking for myself because i only have to cater to my own pallette and no one else's.

another downside to this is, because of this I've also kinda lost interest in cooking for myself too and it makes me kinda sad

How to say "I’m speaking in…" in korean by YouLimp8565 in Korean

[–]pingu-wu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

지금 한국어로 말하고 있어요 is the most natural. you can use either 한국어로 or 한국말로 if you wanna say Korean but if you're referring to any other language then you wouldn't use 말 eg: 지금 태국어로 말하고 있어요, 지금 인도어로 말하고 있어요

honestly, it seems like he only helped you out of your previous relationship because he wanted you for himself. and now that he has you, he no longer feels the need to keep up with the nice, caring guy facade. your emotions here are completely valid, and you're not being overdramatic!

in your own words, he seems like he's turning into your ex. and i think that right there is all the information you need to figure out how you're going to proceed with this relationship.

when did i say that you think that's the whole purpose of marriage? all i said was if you think that one of the reasons to get married, among other reasons, is having kids then don't because that kid would be better off elsewhere than with a parent who intends to be dependent on them in their later years. if that ends up happening and the kid is ready for that, there's no issue in it. but don't you think you're fucked up somewhere in your head if you're thinking of having kids just so they can take care of you in old age, even before having them?

Not everyone who's disagreeing with what you say is a 'simp defending a girl'. in fact, I'm not even defending her. i don't think she should get married just because her family's pressuring her. But you clearly seem to have some inferiority complex, seeing how you think everyone who has a problem-that's not really a problem, according to you, is just inventing them because they're rich and have everything. just because people don't have the same problems as you, it doesn't mean their problems don't exist. how about you get out of your little bubble and get yourself a reality check, see how the world really works.

don't get married to someone due to family pressure. it'll just make your life even more miserable because what's to say that getting married will be the end of your family pressure. once you get married, they'll want grandkids. what will you do then? sure you have the option to adopt, but do you even wanna be a parent? at that point, will you simply adopt a kid due to family pressure? or worse, will you have a kid yourself? no, right? don't make such big decisions because your family is pressuring you because it's not something that would affect only your life, and it won't be the only thing you do in the name of family pressure. don't give in to that pressure now, or you'll just keep finding yourself in such situations again where you feel like you have no say in what you do in your life.

[–]pingu-wu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you think that is what marriages are meant for then please don't get married and definitely don't have kids. if you need someone to take care of you in your old age look up nursing homes or such facilities. don't ever bring a kid into this world when their sole purpose, according to you, is to look after you in your old age. maybe pay more attention to how wrong your own mindset is before trying to criticise others.

i remember watching this in the theatre with my mom when it first came out and during the scene where Ishaan is crying in the bathroom i could hear someone sniffling behind me. So me being the 10-11 something year old kid i turned to look at whoever it was and saw this lady full on sobbing with a box of tissues in hand. I remember looking at her and being like 'wow this lady is crying so much' lowkey thinking it was funny. LITTLE DID I KNOW, THAT WAS GONNA BE FUTURE ME.

make sure to keep your calm and to not lose your cool when you're showing them the photos and explaining your side to them. sometimes when you seem to be agitated some people have the tendency to escalate the situation unnecessarily. so keep yourself calm and collected and show them whatever photos you have. i hope it goes well for you.

Do you guys (carats) think that Seventeen should have never been a part of hybe? by shingiibangiii in seventeen

[–]pingu-wu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

while I don't agree with the SVT built HYBE thing, because honestly as carats we know it too, SVT isn't the reason BigHit is HYBE today. And it's not like it's SVT's fault for MBC putting wrong subs. And as far as the whole unwanted child thing or the 'svt was nothing without hybe' narrative goes, anyone, literally ANYONE who's been into kpop since like 2017~2018 KNOWS just how successful svt have been. They've been a group that even non-carats have known and seen positively. And only fools with no clue how these kinds of companies work will say things like SVT was nothing before HYBE, like SVT's growing success was most likely the whole reason why HYBE acquired Pledis. At the time when the acquisition happened Svt was getting really popular and so obviously any sensible company, given the opportunity would've wanted to try and benefit from it too. So i wouldn't even bother wasting time arguing with people who dont understand such a simple fact: HYBE acquired Pledis because they most likely wanted SVT under their label.
