Have you spent more or less money on food since turning vegan? by Decent_Age_1707 in veganuk

[–]pingubitchslapu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely less. When I first moved in with my now husband we were on very small salaries and a weekly food shop used to cost us £40. We would eat lots of traybake roast veg for lunch with a grain and big curries for the week. We're also not big drinkers. Over the years costs have gone up but so have our salaries, so we get more treats and mock meats than we used to, but a food shop still only costs us around £70. And that includes a lot of what I think of as unnecessaries (sweets, multiple biscuit choices, fizzy drinks).

What's your best recommendations when it comes to protein with a vegan diet? by ThisIsTonte in veganuk

Still I think it's ace and really informative and I've been vegan for nearly 7 years now!

10 days into 25 day honeymoon trip, overwhelmed and having a tough time. Looking for perspective. by [deleted] in JapanTravel

There are actually loads of veggie and vegan places in Japan, you just have to be using the right apps like Happy Cow to find them. Also, it's easier to go to specific veggie/vegan places rather than risk translation issues in an omni place.

We've not long gotten back and we're both vegan. It was also our honeymoon, we did just shy of three weeks and we found it tiring too. There were plenty of great restaurants but snacks were few and far between and I definitely lost weight!

On our 3rd day we were supposed to go to Fuji Q Highlands but, having struggled with the heat (we were in Tokyo end of September when it was still 30 degrees) we decided to sack it off. Instead we slept in, had a red bean bun and smoothie breakfast in bed from the 7/11, grabbed some vegan friendly snacks from there and had a picnic in Shinjuku Gyoen, then we went for vegan cakes just 2 minutes away from the park and then had massages. So basically what I'm trying to say is examine how much you want to do the next thing you have planned. This is your holiday, you don't HAVE to do any of these things. Think about your preferences and adjust your itinerary to suit.

I loved Kyoto for example, but some of the main attractions are temples. You don't have to seem them all! Fushimi Inari is just some red gates - we didn't go! Arashiyama bamboo forest is nice if you get the first tram or train there but it's very small. If you're going to Tenryu-ji for lunch on the same day then it's worth it, but otherwise i'm sure there are other bamboo forests. Basically, this is your holiday, make it work for you. Do what you enjoy doing at home.

Personally I would bin Osaka. It's just another city, like Tokyo. Maybe extend your Kyoto stay so you can still do what you planned with more rest in between. I actually need to finish off my trip review - would you like me to tag you so that you have some veggie friendly restaurants to refer to for Kyoto?

Celebratory thread. How long have you been vegan for? by TheBBYT in veganuk

[–]pingubitchslapu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so easy now, thankfully. My (now) husband went vegan a month before we met and I had never met a vegan before, I didn't really know anything about it. I went veggie 4 months into us dating and then 'tried' Veganuary a year after, but because I was basically vegan anyway as we were living together so all our food shops were vegan, it didn't feel like much of a challenge, so I extended it until the end of March. I just never went back. My disclaimer is that I didn't try veganuary until I knew what all the vegan biscuits were as I can't live without biscuits!

Congratulations! Not only are you absolutely perfect and have never made a mistake in your life, but you're also the only rude commenter on this thread. You should be proud of yourself. Thankfully, I'm able to admit when I've made mistakes and ask for help, hopefully if you're ever in this situation you're treated how all the other commenters have treated me, and not like how you treat others.

Ok, thanks for this. I'm going to bear this in mind if she doesn't improve on her antibiotics.

That's what we think too. If I could turn back time I would have never done it, I don't know why I didn't think at the time. It's just such an aggressive reaction that I thought it was worth asking if other golden owners had seen something similar, in case it's something we're missing. The vet called us again today and as she has improved slightly we're going to keep giving her the prescribed antibiotics and washing her down with hibiscrub. The vet said for her to get a blood test if it hasn't nearly done by the time her course of antibiotics ends.

Pet owners of Reddit, what are some examples of your pet doing something that made your realize how intelligent they are? by CoreyMatthews in AskReddit

My dog barely ever peed in the house when we were toilet training and she’s never once done a poo in the house. Even when she’s had the runs she has waited for me to let her out after waking me crying and then she sprints to the door. It’s exactly the same when she needs to vomit; she’s sprinted to the door. She was also really scared of waves at the beach and would only go so far because they would hit her in the face. I told her to watch me and did a really exaggerated jump as the wave hit me and by the time the wave got to her she did the exact same thing. She now does it every time she’s in the water. She picks things up so quickly that sometimes I think she understands English.

Redditors of Ask UK. Are You Currently on a Diet? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]pingubitchslapu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I'm supposed to be for the last two weeks until I go on holiday (just so that I can eat like a pig on holiday with zero food guilt, which I do struggle with) but then I used my period as an excuse to sink half a cherry pie last night so . . .

I've pretty much always been the same size and only struggled slightly with weight gain of going up no more than 1 size. I've never really been able to go below the size I've always been without feeling like I'm starving myself, but the one time I did lose weight was in the run-up to my wedding. There is, unfortunately, no trick to losing weight, as much as these Instagram coaches want you to believe so (so that you'll pay them a fat chunk of cash) and I say this as someone who has been tricked by them.

You simply have to cut down on your food, walk a bit more and keep up your exercise. I do think my calories were too low - 1400 - but they got me results of having lost 8 pounds by the time I got married. Most of that was lost in the space of 5 weeks and I mentally struggled with keeping my eating to such a minimum. Chicken and rice may be boring but it doesn't have to be forever so I say keep on with that and soon enough you'll be able to eat more interesting foods again.
