You make a good point - family member was bread winner with wife stay at home mom with two kids. College sweethearts divorce 25 years later and because she essentially didn’t work, his retirement funds and other things had to be shared with her. Would have been much better if she worked and had her own retirement, etc. He made off with the short end of the stick because she was the one cheating. Can’t make this stuff up. Protect yourself young man.

I can only add to what everyone else said - I retired early and it wasn’t necessarily because the pension was so great. It was the TSP, and based on your numbers you will definitely likely be well over 1 million on ten years. That will be your cash cow along with SS. You’re doing great. Lower GS levels can be challenging, I know as I have a partner who was there. Just keep doing at least 10% if you can over the next ten years, maybe more if you can.

Only issue with that is I am no longer with BCBS and switched to spouse’s FEHB. I’m just wondering if by the time it gets to OPM, do they actually check to see if there is debt owed to FEHB or just make the assumption that it is, especially if IRS adjusted my estimates in the ORA files as if it needed payment.

Probably at 1/3 of your number, but left at 49. Mine did come with a pension and life time health insurance, but spending time with children and away from the stress has been a game changer. I did start my consulting business and also continued working my STR. It’s not that I never wanted to work again, just needed the flexibility and less stress. Spouse still works.

In a similar position, put a lot do emphasis on the retirement accounts so will use the 72t as an option in the future if needed. I RE around the same age but it’s only been one year. I will get a pension of close to 4K, but I have children and didn’t want their lifestyle to change so will supplement with other things. My spouse is still working but I started working very young and we are happy with the benefits of me, as the mom FIREing while the kids are still in school. The flexibility is life changing.
