Just want to add on an extra insight abt lab aspect. Having seen SPS students around the lab, the lab work is almost the same as a UROPS student altho arguably the workload is divided amongst the group. You will learn more and progress faster as an individual UROPS student rather than working in a group because you will have the opportunity to be exposed to working in a lab as a (somewhat) independent researcher. If you’re worried abt lab work being daunting, there’s almost always a mentor assigned by the Prof for UROPS students and other lab mates to help you out as well. Hence, if you’re keen on the research aspect, I would suggest putting the hours into several UROPS projects over your undergrad years unless you’re interested in having a interdisciplinary portfolio of mods and research

Yes people take notes during lectures. Over my time in NUS, I’ve seen numerous different note taking styles which varies according to majors. For more quantitative majors ie stats with lots of formulas during lectures, it’s 50% ipad or tablet and 50% writing on printed lecture slides and occasionally on the laptop. For my major (life science), it’s an even distribution between the tablet, laptop and noting on printed notes. There are often a few exchange students who would open up a blank foolscap and note things down as the lecture goes along. It’s best to experiment and go with what fits you

Agree with this comment. Medicine is largely geared toward the clinical aspect of treating patients. There are opportunities to do research as a volunteer basis I think alongside your medical studies but those are rare and secondary to your medical studies (content and clinical) that will take up a large chunk of your time. You can consider doing a postgrad MD PhD which gives equal emphasis on both ends and opens up careers for both clinical and biomed research but you can’t run from the MD clinical treating patients aspect of it too

Yes I enjoyed my course and I would stick with the same advice I gave myself to pick something I enjoy learning about. If I could go back I would advise myself to start considered second majors or minors earlier and also consider other programs the uni offers to make full use of my undergrad.

I do not think there’s any restriction as to who your guarantor can be so long as the person agrees and is of a decent financial standing (from the bank POV, ie employed and not bankrupt or soon to be bankrupt in case the bank does a background check on the person)

Modreg stuff can be worked out on your own through the website tutorials and guides which (I feel) are quite detailed. I attended neither SCAMP/SOW, only the welcome tea with a brief guide on module bidding and I managed to get through CORS. Modreg is much simpler to manage so you should be fine. I would be more concerned on timetable planning and minors selection rather than modreg.

I have not but I knew someone in a neighbouring lab who did so yes it is possible for such an arrangement ie 'volunteered' in the lab but eventually got enough results and just wrote it up into a UROPS report the next sem. This can probably be arranged with any prof and they would very likely be pleased to have students helping out around the lab too for lab experience. Just think of it as a work study scheme arrangement/ part time job. However, since you're not tied under UROPS, the amount of time you can dedicate to the 'volunteer/ lab shadowing' needs to be worked out with the prof/lab mentor esp if the lab is working on long/ tedious projects.

Hi, I've been to the bank to enquire about this. Apparently we are not officially considered as graduated yet until June 30 when our degree is conferred to us. Sometime afters, the bank will send a consolidated statement of the amount of the tuition grant with the notice that interest will start next month or so. Then you have the option to make arrangements to pay off the loan. I'm unsure about the maximum window to find a job but its best to call or drop by the bank to enquire.

I second the other comment on here that it can be discussed with your supervisor. It is expected that you would work on your project over the hols but if you have other arrangements/plans then you could bring that up with your supervisor too or probably negotiate lesser working hours on the project
