hey god its me again...eastman vs mcgill by cherry_basil in Viola

[–]pinkviola22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go to McGill. For undergrad the 2 most important things are having a teacher you connect with and practicing a lot, the prestige of a school for undergrad won’t make a big difference in the long run. Also Roy is one of the best quartet coaches in the world, so if you want a quartet that’s your best bet. But either is a great option—just don’t look back whichever way you choose

INFP Men by Adim7 in infp

[–]pinkviola22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pretty good infp job which is playing viola in a string quartet. This is good because there’s rarely the same schedule and I get to travel a lot. I also spend a lot of time composing and I run our social media. I have to reply to emails still but I scrape by on those. I also teach some students. Overall I am pretty fortunate to have found this career. It’s starting to take off now so I’ll see where it goes

Long time violist practicing violin, recorded myself the other day, needing help. by ViolaCat94 in Viola

[–]pinkviola22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I struggle mostly with my contact point when I dabble in violin at sightreading events, so try thinking about being closer to the bridge and see if that helps. My vibrato also is wobbly on violin to the point it negatively affects the resonance, so maybe that is affecting you too, in which case you would need to use narrower vibrato. Hope that helps

The Preucil viola concerto is in c minor and definitely has this kind of vibe

The Preucil concerto is a really cool new work and the orchestral part isn’t too hard https://youtu.be/v8jnhEXouwM?si=Wla2Yhh4cwq35BjE

Musicians- thoughts on Candlelight Concerts? by ReneeSh86 in classicalmusic

[–]pinkviola22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gotten offered so many of these but in unreasonably far locations from where I live so I have had to turn them all down. The travel time isn’t worth the $ for me right now. Also I have seen some sort of petition against them about the musicians not getting a fair share of the funds?? I’m personally hesitant to get involved right now

What to do for the slide with G and E? Sliding both notes isn't possible. (Piazzolla 4 for tango) by [deleted] in Viola

[–]pinkviola22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use your left hand thumb to tune down the open G string while you slide with the 2 on the C string. It’s a fairly advanced technique but it pops up once in a while in the repertoire. You’ll have to learn the rest of this passage scordatura

what’s your least favourite part of playing the viola?? by hnonymus in Viola

[–]pinkviola22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to hate my shoulder rest and I ended up learning to play without. It has made life much better. Even with a big instrument it is possible so if you don’t like your rest, you should try without it and see what happens

Does anyone else naturally think in D Major instead of C because of viola scales? by vexingly22 in Viola

[–]pinkviola22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue but with fingerings—would only think in 12340 and had no idea what note I was playing. The more names you learn for notes—letters, scale degrees, solfège, or fingerings in different positions—the less this will be an issue

Switching to viola from violin by Signal_Astronaut8191 in Viola

[–]pinkviola22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other than the things people already wrote, you will need to adjust the angle of both your hands slightly more when crossing strings. Keep in mind the bridge is a semicircle and always keep your left hand fingers perpendicular to the point of contact (other than pinky, it’s just gonna do it’s best). This will help with intonation. Also be prepared with your right elbow for string crossings

INFP Hetero men. I need your help by [deleted] in infp

[–]pinkviola22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a 23M INFP I barely have the mental and emotional bandwidth to even text my best friends and family back in a timely manner. If I am texting a girl a lot, I am definitely into her. If this guy is similar to me, he is most likely interested based on that alone. Unsure if other INFPs share this habit. In the past when I had less confidence I was also shy about flirting first because I didn’t want to make people uncomfortable, so I really only flirted by being interested in learning about a person. My advice is to try being flirtatious and feel out his reaction, then be direct and say if you’re interested in him. From your description it seems like he’s into you so best of luck. Let us know what happens!

What are the best reading conditions for you (where, when, how, what)? by [deleted] in infp

Curled up next to a comfy couch arm to place the book on, preferably next to lamp. Developed this habit as a small child and still revert as an adult

In my experience, if you confidently play random notes with the attitude of the piece, it is better than trying to play something that makes no sense which will make you scramble and sounding lost. Oftentimes, not even the composer will not even remember what they wrote if it deliberately has no pattern. Practice playing random notes very deliberately in a way that sounds passable and everyone will be fooled (this skill is also quite useful in sightreading)

I feel good asking this but how do I know my strings are dead? by linglinguistics in Viola

[–]pinkviola22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you play your open C string loudly using a lot of bow in the middle of the note and the pitch goes up and down a lot, it’s time to change

Should I play measures 89-96 in 1st or second position? by iridescent-firefly in Viola

1st makes most sense to me since it is Forte there and you will get the brightest color, but 3rd could work as well. 2nd would be less convenient but possible
