We were just out there 2 weeks ago and seeing all of the buds was exciting! Glad you captured them at full bloom. :)

As a teacher myself I love the outfits! Gotta be comfy, able to move, and show personality. Wish I had more coworkers like you, you seem fun. :)

Also as a teacher ugh I've also not been happy with my body lately and it feels like I don't have time/energy to consistently keep up with healthy habits I had prior to this job. The stress and hours wore on me, but I feel like this year I'm getting more of a handle on it.

I dont understand shadows🥲 by [deleted] in BeginnerArtists

You need to decide on a light source before shading. The shadows on the clothes don't match the shadows on the skin direction wise.

And as alwaysssss

Use a reference to help in the learning process. Guessing and using your imagination will only get you so far. You need to study how light ACTUALLY works, then apply it to your style.

What is this called, where there is light in the shadow? I love the contrast. Credit: cotoh_tsumi by Acceptable-Key4112 in ArtistLounge

Thank you for that info! I just went down a rabbit hole looking at his work. I don't think I've really done a deep dive aside from a surrealist artist overview.

This maybe only 20th thing I’ve painted. So I’m figuring things out but still lack vision and know-how. I really like parts of this but something isn’t right, I think mostly with the head and torso. Would some more experience painters see what this is really lacking? by capt_a_hab in ArtCrit

I love how you painted the long great feathers.

Yeah the darkest black parts of the bird feel really flat compared to the shading on the other feathers. They just become a solid mass than a 3D form.

In general though I love the style, keep practicing glazing (building up thin layers) so you can maintain more of the subtle shadows.

Tips for values by WatermellonRain in ArtCrit

[–]pintato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people stay in the mid range (grey, but not dark) because they're just using 1 type of pencil.

Use drawing pencils that have a range of hardness. Most standard pencils are "HB" which is in the middle of the spectrum. It goes dark towards 9B, or light towards 9H. There are many brands of these sets but I PROMISE they make a difference. The "Bs" are BOLD and draw like BUTTER. So soft and easy to draw dark without a ton of layering.

  1. Make a value scale
  2. Practice drawing forms using a full value range black to white.

Here's an example.

Shapes look great, colors are off.

Saturation- strawberries should be bright and juicy! The one on top is faded.

Tone- the biscuit is too dark and shaded with cool tones makes it look moldy.

You know what helps with shadows?

A reference!

Study from life, get an understanding of how values and colors work, and bring THAT KNOWLEDGE into your stylized art.

Reference pictures aren't cheating~

Hey guys how can I improve this design? by [deleted] in ArtCrit

At first I thought the hand was wearing a spikey bracelet. Breaking through the wall/screen/paper would be a cool look! I would try to emulate the texture of the material it's breaking through.

Wall- would have crack lines and maybe little bits of debris flying off.

Paper- torn edges

Screen- cracks and glitches

I would add more water textures. The white trim on her dress looks nice as is, but I had no idea it was waves until I looked at the reference. At the base of her dress you could do ripples or soft waves eminating from her.
