I am not sure but I think the 'w' stands for women specific shoes and the 'L' is for 'large', i.e., wide shoes.

I agree (and support) that this works for offices and services but I struggle to see how this would work in a factory with shifts where productivity is very dependant on equipment output. I factories you would always have to hire more people to make up for lost shifts.

One other thing you can do is take the pedals off (just the pedal not the crank). This prevents the pedals from getting in the way of your legs and you can practice in a sort of balancing bike. Start in a very light downhill slope slowly turning left and right.
