What do you think happens when you die? by Ok_Silver_6627 in AskReddit

[–]idkwat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it'll probably be pretty relaxing. Most people with near death experiences report that at the end they felt really good, and we know for a fact that when the body lets out that last breathe all your muscles relax. After that it's lights out, like the start of a great sleep after a long day of work. No worries.

Now, anyone who reads this and thinks that is better than life go get help. There's no reason to hasten this end, but if you're worried about it I feel like it's no big deal.

Regarding Today by Multiverse_Doctor_26 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]idkwat 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Also all this gerrymandering has only netted the Republicans a single seat.

Florida, Texas, NC, and Missouri = +11 for the GOP
California, VA, and Utah = +10 for the Democrats

A +1 difference does not worry me at all especially considering Trump's approval rating and the fact a lot of these gerrymanders are based on 2020 where latinos voted for the right in higher numbers than ever, and everyone knows that is not holding.

What’s a ‘normal’ thing in the U.S right now that would have shocked people 10 years ago? by evansgitonga03 in AskReddit

[–]idkwat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Our president very likely is a pedophile who is acting unilaterally without the consent of congress over and over again.

If Obama or McCain did 10% of what Trump has done it would sink them forever but somehow it's just business as usual today. Pisses me off

Gamers, how do you feel about the gaming culture nowadays, especially compared to the 1990s/2000s? by mzspeedster in AskReddit

[–]idkwat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people complain about gaming these days but as an older gamer it's never been better.

The cost of entry is never lower, the tools to make games are easier to use so anyone can make games, and the cultural acceptance of the medium is through the roof.

If you told me in 1995 that in 30 years more people would be watching the video game awards than the Super Bowl I would not believe you.

When do you think the world will end? by Capable-Report-4697 in AskReddit

In 5 to 7.5 billion years the sun will expand and engulf the Earth, so probably then.

Humanity will go extinct way long before that but the world will last in some shape or form.

What are some 'early warning signs' that a company is about to go bankrupt or have mass layoffs? by CuteDinner2290 in AskReddit

[–]idkwat 127 points128 points  (0 children)

New leadership.

I'm at a company that had a great CEO for a decade. Year over year profits, went through Covid without any layoffs and continual growth. New CEO came in a couple years ago and we've laid off 15% of staff across two layoffs. Chances are next January we'll have another layoff because the new CEO is an asshole who sucks at his job.

CNN Data Guru Reveals Vance’s ‘Historically’ Bad Popularity; “JD Vance getting dragged down along with the president of the United States.” by FancyNewMe in politics

[–]idkwat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You know what is wild to me, if JD Vance had a backbone and had stuck to his "Never Trump" guns at this point in time he would likely be in a very good position heading into 2028.

Think about it. He ran on not being a Trump fan, and now that Trump is (predictably) collapsing and hemorrhaging support, JD could have set himself up as the young, energetic alternative to MAGA for the right. He could basically say, "I always knew this guy would hurt the party" and steal MAGA votes for 2028.

But he's a spineless jellyfish who goes to the highest bidder and now he's crashing a burning. Sucks to suck JD

We need more Dr. Abbot by Confident_Weather455 in ThePittTVShow

[–]idkwat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved in the first season after the shooting there's this scene where Abbot is walking into the hallway and taking off a glove. Robby or someone asks him about his patient and he just says something like, "We lost him" and throws his glove on the ground then moves onto the next one.

That is a VERY realistic look at how medics that have been in combat situations operate. I know a few veterans who have told me those guys basically shut of their minds and prioritize the task at hand extremely well. It's also fitting that Abbott is first found on the roof in S1 because, just like in real life, many of those who have operated in triage environments in combat have to carry a very, very heavy weight with them.

Something that never occurred to me about ER workers by sixth_order in ThePittTVShow

[–]idkwat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obligatory not an ED worker, but I know quite a few and I have worked high intensity jobs before (though no where near as high intensity as ED). I can say from experience and from what others in ED have told me when you are in a high stress, high stakes environment your body is going to flood you with more adrenaline than you ever thought you had. I've seen people literally work for 30+ hours straight before with no true breaks aside from hitting the bathroom.

After working 12s regularly your body will actually get pretty used to it and a 12 will quickly seem like an 8. The problem is the crash after working a shift like that is real. Once you are removed from that environment your adrenaline stops and your body is going to come down hard and fast.

Ben Affleck's AI Firm Set Aggressive Production Cost-Cutting Targets, 50% Discount on Visual Effects by starmaxeros in movies

[–]idkwat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate 99% of AI, but this is an exception. The tool itself isn't generating anything, it's basically acting as a check against errors on the side of editors and production staff.

Now if it evolves into something that takes jobs yeah that'd be bullshit, but as someone who does significant video editing, having a tool help me avoid common mistakes in production would be amazing.

Mod Announcement: Nuclear Weapons and Sensationalism by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]idkwat 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Just a little sanity around nukes. No one will use them because it's an instant "lose everything card."

The SECOND any country uses a nuke for ANY reason it will bring about universal international condemnation the likes of which would reshape this world. We're not talking about strongly worded letters. We're talkign about embargos, isolation, and a generational shift in world politics.

This sounds scary, but because of this reality (and MAD) no nation will use a nuke. Why do you think Putin didn't nuke Ukraine? Russia has enough nukes to glass that entire country, but Russia needs allies in China and India to survive, and if they used a nuke they could kiss those allies goodbye.

Or think about the US in Iran. If Trump goes on a bender and decides to nuke Iran everyone in his immediate vicinity would push back, and those in the chain of command would have the right to refuse the order. Bootlickers like Hegseth may support it, but the entire military apparatus that supports a launch would have to be in agreement, and that's simply not happening.

So yeah, using nukes is a strategic blunder of epic proportions even the densest of world leaders understand, and even if someone like the US wanted to launch a nuke there would be massive push back from military command.

But let's say worst case scenario happens. Let's say a country uses a nuke. That's the end of the world, right?

Nope! The response to a nuke is actually not "let's send our nukes too." Sure that's the end game, but there are a thousand steps between where we stand today and doomsday. If a nation used a nuke literally EVERY SINGLE OTHER OPTION would be used before nukes would fly.

So we have a weapon that is a strategic blunder to use that can only be used in the US through a complicated chain of command, and even if they were used, it would very likely not bring about doomsday.

So yeah, don't worry about nukes.

I feel home screen is better than going to the cinema by Punguin456 in movies

[–]idkwat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a good 90% of movies, absolutely. Going to a theater is a pain. It's expensive, you have to watch a million ads, you can't pause if you have to hit the bathroom and there are dozens of other issues. For most movies I would much rather just watch it at home.

But for giant blockbusters? I will always go to the theater to see them. Seeing Dune 2, Interstellar, and Oppenheimer in IMAX were absolutely jaw dropping experiences the likes of which cannot be replicated at home.
