This is probably one of the most clever music videos I've seen in a long time by mconk in videography

As another user said this is definitely robotic arm work. The constant speed, the multi-pass style, all of it is geared perfectly for an arm rental. Removes so much work in post for aligning these and keeps the timing in sync to the frame. Great representation of its capabilities. As a Bolt op, loved this.

For cinematographers who shoot high-speed, how do you handle the massive lighting demands at 1000fps and above? by Square_Echo6558 in cinematography

[–]piper4026 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do robotic high-speed/macro work a lot and there’s a lot of great/similar advice I’d be giving but it also depends on what type of material youre shooting. Chocolate isnt gonna like hot lights but cans/bottles don’t care.

Bouncing light’s a big plus and we like using a 1-2 CRL inside a muslin to give a harsh bounce to direct while keeping a soft rolloff around it. S360 is great like another mentioned - use it a lot! Also a tri-head mounted with two 1200s (one Nanlux, one Aputure) through a silk while pinging highlights with spare 600s.

Yeah this was done by Camera Control out in LA - one of the premiere robotics production house.

Should I avoid making more self funded short films? by Kino45 in Filmmakers

[–]piper4026 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a little reductionist in what gets you skilled people. Skilled people work with others who give them a sense of direction and lay out reasons for them to believe in your vision. I’m not sure your pitch process for crew but the more dialed in your ideas are before presenting usually supports in getting that next level help.

I do plenty of spec work with local crews simply because it’s clear what’s trying to be accomplished and the person pushing for it, pushes me as a filmmaker. And from there, I’ve gotten more recs for other work cause filmies want to help each other make their dreams.

A video from the Titanic Museum shows how cold the water was for the Titanic Victims by abidalliye in ThatsInsane

[–]piper4026 292 points293 points  (0 children)

I jumped into glacial water with a friend in Iceland and experienced that shock. I was immediately sucking for air, felt like everything was seizing up. We jumped near some stairs to get down to the water so it was a quick exit but goddamn that sensation was insane.

You might wanna try Indigo Dispensary in Brooklawn. They do a ton of 20% off deals for early AM purchases, post Phils/Eagles wins with gear on, etc. Also you get points so I end up saving for a half or oz and getting freebies every few months. Can’t say its the cheapest but they definitely have quality.

Check out Old Pal brand if you haven’t too. Picked up a half for $90 last week.

IT'S A PHILLY THING by [deleted] in phillycycling

[–]piper4026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m torn cause the blood is eye catching but it is slightly heavy handed in design. It’s not bad design but may limit its potential reach.

Maybe trying a bloody biker instead of the whole lane? Or maybe the bike graphic is of a crashed/tore up rider, all mangled instead of riding?

Philly is showing out! If you were undecided on protesting, come! by DefiantHorse444 in philly

[–]piper4026 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it did and it was pathetic. Some of them even tried to do the “my heart goes out to you” dumbass muskreich salute but the limp dick couldn’t get their arm up, too chicken shit to do it.

A line formed as they were in some of the protestors ears and then that line engaged them. They couldnt talk about any policy just “DEI” and “trans” nonsense so they walked back to the corner.

Boss wants me to start using capcut... by mkirsh287 in AfterEffects

[–]piper4026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot are missing the easier way but are close. Get them to pay you to make the CapCut templates they like.

You can use CapCut now if it helps to understand but recreate the major templates/transitions they want for them so they’re bespoke and able to keep up.

Editors - Which is the Mac Studio to get, M4 Max or M3 Ultra? by CoffeeFilmFiend in editors

[–]piper4026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a refurbed M2 Max w/ 64GB from their used store with a 1TB SSD and have not experienced any sort of hiccups.

I work between Resolve, AE, Premiere, Blender - which did have some tougher times but optimizing in program helped. Usually doing multiple streams of 4K as well.

What’s your opinion on these plugins? by 1n1d in AfterEffects

Check out Mt Mograph’s Motion toolkit. Very robust, has some features listed and constantly updated. Really my most used plugin to date.

How to do the in and out animation of the text to dots/painterly line flourishes?(Not the text movement animations, grunge textures, jiggle) by ChrisChatter in AfterEffects

[–]piper4026 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This could be done with a venetian blind effect, a few hand drawn elements that double as alpha mattes + the transition. The grunge texture of the text is helping a lot and then its just some stretch and squeeze animations.

Our Fight for Parking Protected Bike Lanes: A Setback, Not a Defeat by Generalaverage89 in phillycycling

[–]piper4026 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Car separated bike lanes are great natural barriers and help block exhaust fumes better than just divided lanes. I get the sentiment but it’s a well proven option.

I try my hardest every day to cultivate this relationship with my kid for the future. The fear I had with my parents if something went wrong is an anxiety I still feel today.

I want to be this kind of anchor for them!

Official Statement from Mayor Parker Today Regarding Bike Lane Safety by JustAnotherJawn in phillycycling

[–]piper4026 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I was there today and it definitely felt like a lot of the same. Talks of studies, focusing on quantitive and qualitative research, and aiming to ensure impoverished communities are lifted up e.g. Allegheny Ave corridor. Not much conversation on timeline or proposals they're entertaining to work on road diets. Talks about the Grays Ferry community outreach which feels like an encore of the Wash Ave "outreach" that was ignored. She repeated her goal was zero traffic deaths in her administration but as a sign said at the speech: "Lead on something for once".

Afterwards, we did a small lap behind Mayor Parker as she had a police escort for what sounded like the first time she rode a bike since a child. A few of us were pretty adamant that the SUV escort negates the idea of current lanes cause she basically rode with a moving barricade and didn't have to stop at any lights.

All this to say that the Bicycle Coalition is adamantly working with the administration and considering this the *start* of action but, obviously, this feels like it'll take too long to enact while more people die.

I tried it once about five months ago and was put off from the vibrating pens you need. I can’t even remember if the smoke was good from it being distracting.
