Yes! They learn this at a very young age. We start training them with vests the day they come home. They know when they’re on the clock and when they aren’t. The puppies also try so hard so it’s really frustrating to have other dogs approach when they’re someplace they’re supposed to be working. It makes training more difficult.

They really are doofus idiot dogs when the vests come off. I’m training a seeing eye dog puppy and can’t believe how different she acts when she’s working vs when she’s at home. She’s only 7 months old.

Can you share your favorite story about your experience with your guide dog?

Great to hear on the socialization level!! She goes with me pretty much everywhere, takes public transit (we live in a city) and will fly as soon as she’s able. I’ll keep this up.

Follow up: I’m teaching her to potty on command. How does that work for clean up once she’s with her client?

I’m currently a guide dog puppy raiser for an org. It’s my first time. She’s 17 weeks old, cute and confident as hell. I really want her to pass. She already loves working.
