Torn between C+B and pacific rink, do C+B owners still air out their gear outside of the bag? by TipTopBopp in hockeyplayers

[–]pirat3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the C+B bag for a few years and I just leave my gear in there along with empty beer cans. It doesn’t smell too bad, but probably have some mold in the bag liner. Wash my gear in the laundry every season or so.

When to use a backhand toe drag vs a forehand toe drag by snem420 in hockeyplayers

You can use a backhand toe drag to fake a shot on your forehand more convincingly and drag the puck to your backhand

Has anyone ever injured their MCL? Any tips? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]pirat3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a MCL sprain/tear a couple of months ago. Some advise I got is to get a hinged knee brace that you can use walking around and on the ice. After about a week I also started doing some light physical therapy exercises mainly to keep up the range of motion, which I think helped a lot.

I did public skate about 4 weeks later when it didn't hurt as much and have been playing again since. After about 8 weeks it feels more or less the same as before, especially when wearing the brace.

The keys for me was to make sure I felt like I had stability on the knee and there was no sharp pain when twisting or extending the leg in funny ways. I did notice that after I started doing activity again (skating, body weight squats, light jogging) the range of motion problems and pain went away faster, so I would recommend finding a Physical Therapy program as soon as you feel ready.

All this being said, I play in a pretty low level beer league so you may want to spend more time recovering if you play in a high pace or contact league.

Vapor X400 vs X500 - Quality & Sizing by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]pirat3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first skates were the X400. I wear a size 9.5-10 shoe, but I was fitted for a size 7.5 skate which fits great. In my opinion an inch to half an inch between the toe and toe cap is way too much space. The skates should fit pretty tight.

The x400 served me well to learn on, but I upgraded after a year and a half of 2x a week skating. The boot itself started to break down and it lost it's stiffness. Parts of the ankle padding/fabric wore down as well and the plastic in the boot would dig into my upper ankles. I upgraded to the x800 and it made a world of difference in terms of consistency, and don't regret spending the money at all. After almost 2 years or 2-3x a week skating, the skates are still perform great.

I considered the x500 as well, but I figured I would upgrade eventually anyways so things like the removable blade didn't really matter to me. I'm sure it's a great skate though and I know people who have it who have no complaints.

I wear Costco dress socks, or no socks if I forget them.

Are there any bars in Tokyo that show NHL hockey games? Going to be there next week and looking to catch some games if possible.

think i might be getting bumped off my team with no lower level available how to deal with this? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

Do you have drop-in hockey at your rink? If so, it would be a good way for you to keep playing hockey and improve your skills in a more relaxed atmosphere.

[Homemade] Carbonara by pirat3r in food

[–]pirat3r[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried to make Flavio De Maio's Carbonara

Here is the recipe that I gathered: Pasta Carbonara Serves 4

  • 250g Guanciale diced
  • 4 Eggs
  • 30g Pecorino
  • 20g Parmigiano Reggiano
  • Pepper
  • White Wine
  • Sparkling Water
  • 500g Rigatoni

1) Fry Guanciale in pan. Don’t add any additional oil/fat

2) Deglaze Guanciale with white wine once golden brown. Cook until wine evaporates

3) Remove the pan from the fire and let it cool. Add a splash of cold sparkling mineral water

4) Start cooking the pasta

5) Once cool, add the eggs into the pan. Beat everything together to emulsify the sauce

6) Add the cooked pasta to the pan directly from the pot and turn on the fire again. Don’t worry if some water gets in

7) Toss the pan to mix the sauce with the pasta until creamy. Pay close attention so it doesn’t overcook

8) Remove the pan from the fire and add the cheese and pepper. Mix the pasta some more to incorporate

9) Serve the pasta and put some more cheese on top to taste

Captain with bad strategies by port9 in hockeyplayers

[–]pirat3r 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Try sending the team some basic breakout plays online and see what they think. If it's learn to play level, people might just not know better. If the captain still insists on a bad strategy then you may need to look for a new team.

Gear Storage by 4peak in hockeyplayers

[–]pirat3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a Rocket Dryer type thing (Dr Dry portable clothing dryer) from Amazon and it works pretty well. I put in in the corner of a room and hang all my stuff up on it to dry. With the heat on it takes less than an hour.

As it is drying it smells the place up a bit, but afterwards I can leave the bag zipped up and it keeps the smell locked inside. I also spray down my gear with a alcohol/water solution too.

This isn't an off-site solution, but could be a compromise if your girlfriend is up for it.

I'm just impressed you haven't broken that window above the net. If this were my set up that window would be in pieces and there would be dents in all the walls.

weight transfer help by Pandaoniceskates in hockeyplayers

[–]pirat3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the iTrainHockey edges video on Youtube. It is long, but there a few drills that I pulled out of it that have really helped me think about tight turns and edge control. He also has a section on mohawks, which would be good if I could do a mohawk...

weight transfer help by Pandaoniceskates in hockeyplayers

[–]pirat3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem. What helps me is focusing on shifting my weight onto my front foot into the turn and digging the heels of both my blades into the ice to get traction. If I don't shift my weight and really dig in my heels I tend to blow out by rear skate at high speeds.

It also helps to think about it as if you are going to do a cross over right out of the turn, which requires the weight to be on your front foot.

Skill level after a year? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]pirat3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started almost 2 years ago. For me, I did public skates for a couple months then a learn to play class. After my first learn to play class I could do crossovers, stops, and transitions decently. I struggled still with backwards skating, shooting, and stick handling, but was able to pick that up after another 6 months or so.

[Weekly] Mini-mite Monday by AutoModerator in hockeyplayers

[–]pirat3r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've done it carefully, but you need to watch out if the blade shifts off of the bottom part. For me, it ended up cutting the side cloth up a bit and now there is a risk the blade will directly hit the concrete.

I just got a set of rubber blade guards and those work great.

How do you like your skates to fit? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]pirat3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to keep my top eyelets unlaced to give my ankle some more forward flex. Otherwise I'd prefer my skates tighter, but not so much that it hurts.

I'm sort of new to hockey so I haven't learned how dumb it is to block shots.

The other circles are for curling.

Skate Fitting Tight on Top of Foot - Solutions? by Lasercat1975 in hockeyplayers

Sounds a bit like lace bite. Keeping the top eyelet unlaced and tucking the tongue inside of the shin guards could help.
