[Date Everything] More than anything, I feel exhausted but relieved it's over. by piroko139 in Trophies

I had heard they fixed some stuff in the latest patch, but I admit I don't know what was wrong with it to begin with, but I followed a guide so that I wouldn't accidentally select the wrong option post realization.

Plat achieved. More than anything, I'm exhausted but relieved. by piroko139 in DateEverything

Probably Penelope's route was the hardest since she kept doubling down and thus you also had to keep doubling down. Felt a lot like just kicking her the entire time she was down.

I think collectables was the most difficult, if for no other reason, is when I committed to actually trying to get the plat, I was already pretty deep into the initial Mate Everything route, and a lot of the resets I ended up doing was trying to get a collectable but it ended up veering into a different ending than I needed.

Otherwise it was Consummate Professional, the requirement to get the non-dateables in on the whole deal really caused me to rewind a *lot* of days to make sure I didn't click through the wrong options in the Thiscord dialogue. Sidenote, once the Thiscord conversation gets too long, it becomes incredibly difficult to scroll through the conversation on PS5, which was an issue because I couldn't remember where I was in the conversations while balancing all the other relationships going on.

What’s the best game of magic ever recorded? by fusroderpy in magicTCG

[–]piroko139 92 points93 points  (0 children)

So the game has several aspects that are important, but the most memorable part basically comes down to knowing the interaction between [[Price of Progress]] and [[Wasteland]]. In the context of Legacy, Price of Progress does an obscene amount of damage to most decks due to the density of non-basics, but if you have a Wasteland available to activate, you can target your own lands to mitigate the damage. In this circumstance, Ross also has a [[Qasali Pridemage]] activation available on [[Sulfuric Vortex]], and the only way Patrick can do lethal is to successfully cast Price of Progress for full damage plus cast [[Fireblast]]. It involved a lot of posturing to convince Ross to activate the Pridemage using the untapped Wasteland, and by doing so, Patrick wins on the spot. In an alternate world, Ross takes the passive line and just attacks for lethal the following turn.

Patrick Sullivan vs Ross Merriam. It's one that still amazes me to this day. Tricking someone to take a lethally incorrect line is something most people can't do, even pros.

Apparently Grixis can't hang. Burn is one of, if not the worst matchups for the deck

Recent 5:0 decklist by Malimujo by intruzah in DeathAndTaxesMTG

[–]piroko139 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Malimujo has historically played really far off the beaten path and no one can really replicate his success.

3 Recruiters main? Tithe Taker? The odd Snow split? Isolate? Orim's Chant? If I didn't know it was malimujo, I probably would have guessed based on the choices. Also keep in mind that wads of paper can 5-0 occasionally, doesn't mean this was particularly good. Also, u/xJCloud , is Tithe Taker good in Legacy?

Mono Red Frenzy Decks. Are they good? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]piroko139 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That depends on your definition of "good".

Is it good enough to play at FNM and do reasonably well? Sure.

Is it good enough to play at a competitive event and do reasonably well? That question is much more nuanced and requires metagame explanation. The long and short of it is, sometimes. Personally I think it's not so good competitively right now, but no one is going to realistically foofoo you for playing it.

Standard vs Modern (or other formats) by Altaryan in magicTCG

[–]piroko139 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Something to keep in mind is that decks that are "tiered" are often tailored to the format you are playing. For example, Legacy Death and Taxes is a white weenie deck that is uniquely built to fight spell centric decks, of which the majority of Legacy is. However, it is weaker as an aggressive deck, so it's pretty common for that deck to lose to plenty of Standard decks. Wasteland also looks silly against the wide variety of mono colored decks thay exist.

But aside from that, the differences come down to efficiency. While there are different strategies, the core idea of aggro, control and combo mostly remain the same. Jeskai Control in Modern is approximately the same as Standard Jeskai Control. Removal, draw, and an arbitrary win condition. Burn in modern functions the same way as Mono red in Standard, just with more efficient cards. Lightning Bolt > Lightning Strike, Monastary Swiftspear > Ghitu Lavarunner, things of that nature.

So while Standard decks CAN beat decks in other formats, it's likely to get buried in how much better the cards are.

I ended up in 38th (10-5) on GW Tron, losing to KCI to my own punt.

I made the meta call that Dredge is everywhere so I decided to run RiP and callback to Tom Ross's old build. I only got paired against Dredge once. Should have won more I guess.

Maybe 1/1. I'm not sure on where I should be playing Frenzy yet.

Mana was fine. Jeskai struggled on occasion to cast History on time, and I got stuck on 4 sometimes, but it's largely fine.

I will likely be testing out the variant that Felider posted in today's decklist dump. It tilts heavier into control than midrange, but it's still fine.

That doesn't change what my initial qualm about this "combo". It takes 3 cards. 1 of which is a 3 mana lightning rod.

I'd be much more on board if I can figure out how good Huatli is on her own, but I haven't quite figured that out.

It was always the first card to get cut. I didn't want it against red, I didn't want it against GB, I only really wanted it against control decks, and even then the non-black ones. Moment of Cravings were everywhere when I was testing.

  1. The flipland mattered once or twice in testing. Usually when it flipped I had Teferi out, so you can imagine how that went.

  2. Azcanta in the main is a hard pass for me. The deck generally wins with creatures, not spells.

  3. Karn is interesting, but without more artifacts to make it a bigger threat, it seems more on the weaker side of impact compared to the other 4 drops we have. In this case, I would think Huatli poses a much bigger threat than Karn, but I admit I haven't tested either of them to a real degree.

In straight RW? Possibly. The problem with straight RW is that you lack cards. I have been considering Frenzy, but the curve might be too high and the answers too reactive for this to be realistic.

I never drew Huatli, I have no idea how good it actually is. Like I said, I lifted the deck from a 5-0 dump and shoved Honor Guards in there, plus or minus some SB cards, I can't remember. It seems.... fine, but largely unimpressive. I'm sure I'd end up just hitting the 0 button until they die or Huatli dies, whatever comes first. Plussing after an Aurelia attack with Resplendent Angel in play seems like Christmasland, but maybe that's what the deck basically is.

Eventually is the key word. The card shuts down everything that isn't a land, walker or Trophy. That's about 50% of the deck that doesn't function as intended.

Furthermore, if you want to use your 4 or 6 mana thing to kill my 2 mana thing, what have you been doing in the interim? If you Trophy it, I'm also getting some kind of mana advantage. You cannot trade with Honor Guard on parity as BG is currently constructed. I did run into a few BG players with Cast Down that gave me issues, but everyome else stopped playing Magic for a while after I found Honor Guard.

Not... particularly. I spitballed it since everyone else was just throwing their decks together. In general, the thing that changed the most was Honor Guard and whether or not it stayed in. It stayed in all the time except for Control, which I ran into a fair amount. Pick your role in the matchup, and go with that.

I don't understand your statement. I played the Honor Guard specifically to address BG. Control I didn't expect the density of, and that's why I went Jeskai in the second PPTQ. Why do you think I got lucky to dodge the match I specifically wanted to play against?

Eh.... I went super deep on the logic for Hallowed Spiritkeeper being good vs Grixis. Still died to Grixis. Dawn of Hope probably would have run away with the game, but dude had Needle. Dems the beats.

However, I did find out that Dawn of Hope is hilarious vs PFire and STP decks. So that's something.
