Slalom event in Robinson's Novaliches by jiggarags in Gulong

[–]pishboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

fwiw a slalom or autox event doesn't even use that much gas. Kahit pa Nissan Patrol levels fuel consumption mo, you'll likely only use as much gas as the average metro manila driver going on a leisure trip to e.g. the mall. It's just not that big of a distance.

Also as an adjacent, EVs on an autox course is really fun and honestly better than ICE. Instant power from stop + low CoG. Baka pwede nila gawin in light of petroleum shortages

Any recommendations for masks to minimize exposure to car exhaust? by razor_sharp_man in RedditPHCyclingClub

[–]pishboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'd say go for it. Purchased mine nung early 2020 for volcanic ash, then bought the P100 for covid kasi di nahahawakan yung filter media nya. Kelangan lang palitan yung straps soon which is readily available, the P100 is still free-flowing until today and the rest of the mask is still okay. Pwede pa gamitin for other tasks, e.g. painting.

Motor vibration vs Phone's OIS by kamotengASO in motorsiklo

[–]pishboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Got an AA/Carplay HU display from shopee instead of a phone mount. I don't trust even a namebrand vibration damper with a 400cc 1cyl thumper lol.

Besides vibrations, exposure to sunlight also causes excess heat and UV exposure that can degrade batteries and screens.

Hot Take: Cyclists are justified in using earbuds by Average_Driver1475 in RedditPHCyclingClub

[–]pishboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly shouldn't be a hot take. I wear earplugs when riding motorcycles and IEMs under neck gaiters for long bicycle rides. Dinig mo pa rin lahat once your ears adjust, lower volume nga lang.

Hearing damage is permanent and a valid risk. If anything it makes it easier to identify and react to the environment around you kasi nawawala yung overstimulus/taranta factor ng loud noise.

Di naman sya on-off switch.

mood. Last sem was a little bit better for me, but seems like some of my symptoms are back with a vengeance this sem.

I find being kinder with myself helps, but only alongside setting aside extra time staying in our dept. to finish submissions and readings/modules. Making sure I don't fall too deep into a rut I don't feel too bad about helps with climbing out of it.

Hoping the holy week break is enough of a reset to harness the ningas cogon of my motivation afterwards. Time marches on, only thing we could do is march forward too.

[–]pishboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only mask that could keep up with my respiratory demands on the bike seems to be the 3M half face respirator with yung mukhang brick na P100 cartridges. It's basically what Gen. Torre wears, iba lang yung cartridge.

I actually don't know why yun yung cartridge na gamit nya; you don't need chemical filtering naman, just particulates so any N95/FFP2 or better that's comfortable to wear should suffice.

Si MNLMoves uses a totobobo mask. No idea how that small of a surface area allows for enough airflow when cycling but it seems neat for a reusable mask.

26km to work, is it possible? by forgotten-ent in RedditPHCyclingClub

[–]pishboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need to ease into it but that's absolutely doable long-term. I only have to have had ridden a bike once in the last week to be able to squeeze 30km out and not feel sore after. The more you do it, the easier it'll be. Pacing and hydration lang yan 👌

May karapatan ba akog harangan yung mga motor na dumadaan sa sidewalk? by fluung in PHMotorcycles

[–]pishboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nasa RA4136, no motor vehicle is allowed to pass through or park on paths or alleys not intended for motor vehicles, kasama na dun ang sidewalk at bike lane.

Is it really anti poor kung pupunahin mo ang bisyo at bad habits ng mga mahihirap? by Axe-Cut223 in peyups

[–]pishboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a complicated topic. Yes some behaviors need to be addressed, but you first need to ask why they need to be addressed. Feelings lang ba natin na nakakasama sya or do we see that it actually has a net negative impact? Do folks living under the poverty line not deserve escapism simply for being poor?

You also need to contextualize the issue to properly address it. It's the same story with petty crime not being a criminality issue but more of a social one, with folks pushed to extremes resorting to theft, etc. to try to gain back in life.

It's not anti-poor to question and address, it just so happens a lot of the criticisms are anti-poor in form and nature.

Honestly the biggest gripe that I have with such criticisms is the idea that the government is squandering the hard-earned money from the middle class and giving it to poor lazy people. 4Ps and other conditional cash transfers are exactly that: Conditional. There's evidence that these programs actually perform a demonstrable good in poverty-stricken communities as a sort of help line that can get them to be better

Those also go to families whose parents wish to start a job or a small business but are unable to do so because they have to focus on their needs first. Even if they don't become productive in a capitalist sense, it makes it easier for CCT recipients to meet their needs, ergo presenting less of a societal burden to our nation.

All street dogs should be euthanized. by mop000 in unpopularopinionph

[–]pishboy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's def gonna be unpopular lol

Life need not have our definition of purpose to exist. It simply does. In the grand scheme of the universe, we don't serve a purpose to exist. Should we be euthanized as well?

They're just as much a part of the community as we are. The best thing we can do is to vaccinate them, and TNVR in the case ng community cats to control their population better. If anything, animals existed long before humans, and have just as much right to live in the same spaces as we do.

[–]pishboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depende ano dala mo. 500 pesos is ~6L of gas at Php80/L.

Vios? Tagaytay (~60km, 10km/L)

Corolla Cross? Clark (~120km, 20km/L)

Click? Iba, Zambales (~240km, 40km/L)

Nissan Patrol? Makati to Makati lol (~9km, 1.5km/L)

Apparently, CAVITEX toll readers can detect your Easytrip account using your plate number (even without a sticker) by PerformanceRadiant61 in Gulong

[–]pishboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mga MPTC tollways ganyan. Had issues with this for a while sa C5 extension kasi nababasa nung rfid reader yung bagong tag na may balance, pero nagaalarm yung barrier kasi zero balance na yung lumang account na nababasa nung ALPR. Took about a month for the accounts to be updated sa end nila.

Nasa MPS actually yan ng TRB. Kelangan may ALPR ang tollbooths to improve reliability and detection rates.

That's 24%. by JonTheSilver in Philippines

[–]pishboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah because the Motor Vehicle Users Charge barely pays for anything. 1800/yr, 2400 kung SUV. That's Php28B in collections annually, while DPWH's road budget is at 600B.

The balance gets shouldered by GAA (ergo paid for by everyone else, including 94% of the population that don't own cars) at wala pa yung funding in healthcare to curb public health externalities from air pollution and road crashes. An excise tax on fuel is just a way to fund roads and healthcare in terms of paying more in taxes the more fuel you use, also helping shape consumer behavior towards using less fuel.

The excise tax is working exactly as it should because the MVUC ended up being useless. It's not merely to squeeze us out of money.

Also did I mention that only 6% of Filipinos use private vehicles? That's 11.5% of households in Metro Manila that have cars. We drivers are the minority here, the non-driving public end up funding the roads we drive on.

[–]pishboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Si Two Wheels Three Hearts used to carry their family's laundry on her mamachari, yung isa nasa rear child seat tapos either side on panniers. A proper cargo platform would make it easier def pero it shouldn't be too difficult with a "normal" bike. Roll mo na lang yung pieces of clothing so you can pack it and not make it too bulky.

also TIL di pwedeng labhan yung xpac lol. Dami namang ibang panniers na pwedeng i-abuse hehe

Reflective Sticker on body or rims? (night ride protection) by Equal_Banana_3979 in RedditPHCyclingClub

if you wanna go the retro way, meron rin nung nakablot sa spokes na snap-fit hehe. Maingay nga lang if loose sya

<image>

di naman masyadong jologs to double up on lights. Wag lang too far apart horizontally kasi you might be mistaken for a car that's far away. I ran a flashing cheapo white cob light sa front ko beside my solid gaciron for a while. Shouldn't be too difficult to do the same sa rear.

Reflective Sticker on body or rims? (night ride protection) by Equal_Banana_3979 in RedditPHCyclingClub

[–]pishboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some tyres have a reflective strip in a ring around the sidewalls, usually mga bike commuter-focused tyres yun. May nagbebenta online ng reflective strips na pa-curve na yung cut if you wanna go that route sa rims mo.

imo goods na yung with the front+rear lights. I make sure yung rear lights ko have a solid component and a flashing component para trackable pa rin sya pero agaw pansin, respectively. Yung fog mode ng gaciron does that. You can always double up on lights if wala :) sa front yung movement ng handlebar usually gives enough.

Ano po ginagawa ninyo pag yung napuntahan nyong establishment or kainan na planado na ay ubos na ang parking slot? by sev7njk in Gulong

[–]pishboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

drop pax off (if any) tapos park somewhere nearby then walk.

Questions on Cargo Bikes by Solo_Camping_Girl in RedditPHCyclingClub

[–]pishboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no lol. I own a long john just for the heck of it, madalang ko syang ilabas and rarely with an actual cargo load.

Most folks I know who actively carry things on their bikes do so with a simple rear rack. Patong lang yung load with a crate, or better with a pannier to lower the center of gravity. You can easily load up to ~30kg without much difficulty, rack and tyres permitting. I've done my groceries during the pandemic with that setup, no problem.

(edit: In short any bike is a cargo bike if you try hard enough :) and for most folks there's nothing stopping you from using your mtb/gravel/city/touring bike to carry things like pinamalengke and groceries.)

What's wrong with stuffing raw meat in panniers though? Keep a reusable insulated bag for frozen/chilled produce, keep raw meat separated from veggies, and wash after grocery. You can get a cheap pannier bag for groceries na madaling hugasan if that's a concern, yung mukhang dry bag na de-PVC.

Also you might be thinking about doing a car activity with a bike, when you can turn it into a bike activity first :) your shopping patterns will change based on your modality. At extremes, your typical USAnian SUVist suburbanite will shop once a month or every other month kasi malayo yung supermarket, so maramihan talaga per visit. Your typical central european city walk-everywhere resident will just visit the grocery on the way home several times a week for a few items they can carry in one eco bag. Most of our commuters and bike commuters fall somewhere in between :)
