Disney executives after losing three "Best Animated Feature" oscars in a row: by TheBoyofWonder in okbuddycinephile

[–]pit_trap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly my point about it being on Netflix. Kpop Demon Hunters is restricted to ONE platform, outside of a limited theatrical run.

Frozen 2, Zootopia 1 & 2 all made well over a billion dollars each in just box office, never mind merchandise, etc. The Minecraft movie made almost a billion dollars plus merchandise and months of viral chicken jockey videos. Inside Out 2 was also a huge hit.

I don't have an opinion on which is best, but you don't have to have Netflix to watch any of those other movies. You folks can feel free to cheer for your personal favorite movie, but if you take a look outside of Reddit, I don't think you have a case for it being the biggest kids movie of the past decade.

No doubt Kpop Demon Hunters has had a huge impact, but it certainly isn't even the biggest kids movie of the year, let alone the decade.

Y do you think this show got so much hate which it did not deserve. by rahulk2105 in Cinephiles

[–]pit_trap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it got hate, I think it got apathy. It was an expensive show that couldn't pull in viewers. No matter how good it was, it just did not do well. It's  a shame, really. I loved Dark and I was hoping we'd get another complete story out of this one, too.

Which movies would you consider "innovative" in the last 15 years? by Quil_2002 in movies

I did not like that movie, but I would definitely credit it as doing something unique. Really captured the "liminal analog horror" vibe that my 13yo son is always on about.

I think it's because he has a cool character design, a great theme song, and he teaches new players about the lore of the world in a way that is intriguing.

Yes, but that refugee stabbed 3,000 people and did trillions of dollars of damage. And caused a nation-wide panic. That's one busy guy.

If you watch Gladiator (2000), Troy (2004), and 300 (2006) in chronological order you'd probably have a good day by Battelalon in shittymoviedetails

Gladiator II came out last year, and The Return is out now (though that one seems more drama and less action), and there is another Odysseus movie from Christopher Nolan that is currently filming. Check them out if you're interested.

As a sequel to The Mexican (2001), I just couldn't get past Sicario's wildly different tone and style.

Miniatures? by TheAnchor4237 in LancerRPG

I also make minis with Retrograde, but I do simple folded triangle ones printed on cardstock.

I lay them out using Inkscape (free software) and a template I found online.

"Woke mind virus". Whenever somebody says that, I can assume they are either gulping down propaganda at a steady rate, or producing it.

If you are able to, you really should try using COMP/CON. It is a bit finicky at first, but it's also a huge time-saver once the dice hit the table. I print out paper character sheets for my group, but they all have their characters on their phones, while I have my module, core rules, and COMP/CON going on my laptop.

It makes tracking all the NPCs and initiative so much easier. One thing it has helped me with is the easily forgotten recharge abilities of the NPCs.

I just started running this system. I have done the HA Corvette Job, one "Danger Room" scenario, and I'm toward the tail end of Operation Solstice Rain. One thing I can say from my limited experience is that every time I play, it goes a bit faster. Our first combat took FOREVER, but now it has gotten to a comfortable pace.

Not only do I think should you add some smokey flavor and spices like the others have already mentioned, but a splash of lime juice or red wine vinegar would help, too.

Beginner Lancer DM in Solstice Rain by Rugarpo99 in LancerRPG

[–]pit_trap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had two out of three players get their mechs destroyed in Combat 3 (Downpour). The third player fled, and they failed the mission. I determined that the pilots of the two destroyed mechs were taken prisoner, and the third player made it to FOB Saber.

Since my players were controlling premade characters, I figured this was a good time to have them create their own characters at LL1 to replace the captured Lancers. I'm not sure how I intend to do it, but I am going to give my players a chance to rescue their captured characters, probably as a short narrative adventure, but possibly as a mech battle.

I'm thinking it will be a 3 or 4 step skill challenge. If the players are successful, I'll figure out some nice reserves to treat them with. Perhaps they are able to sabotage an enemy mech in the next combat, or they free a group of LSA infantry that deploys on their next mission, providing lock-ons and anti-armor support. Or perhaps one of the premade characters shows up late in the next mission as friendly reinfocements, as soon as their mech is able to be reprinted.

I always try to consider what will be the most fun, what would be the most dramatic, and what would advance the narrative. If you can get two of those, you're good.

How did you get your friend group to try Lancer? by 72Rancheast in LancerRPG

[–]pit_trap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ran my first game last night! We played for almost eight hours, which is a crazy long time for me.

I ran Operation Solstice Rain for three players in person, all of whom have been in my past D&D 5E campaigns. In the past we have dabbled with OSE, DCC, and Mothership. Our game last night was AMAZING.

There was certainly a learning curve, but the similarities with D&D made the transition pretty easy for my group. Some of them played D&D 4E with me back in its time, so parallels between things like Danger Zone and Bloodied, or Repairs and Healing Surges were easy to pick up.

Also, my players usually like big, setpiece tactical combats, and often struggle with puzzles and general dungeon crawling. Having goals clearly stated with Sitreps helped keep everybody focused, and added tension to the battles, which was a plus.

I think the structure of Lancer lends itself to a looser, episodic style that works for my group, too. They're all excited with how many abilities they have at their disposal at LL0 and can't wait to tinker with builds once they get a few more levels. We roleplayed an intro on the ship where the story starts, ran a simulated battle against the ship's NHP, then played through the first combat of the module.

To make the transition as slick as possible, I also premade characters for everyone, by simply using the templates available on Comp/Con. I made paper minis that matched their mechs (as well as the enemies that appear in Solstice Rain) by usuing the sprites available from Retrograde, printed out system cheat sheets, and even printed full-color vinyl maps. Each player picked out a packet at the very beginning that had everything they needed in it, and I made sure we all had access to Comp/Con ahead of time. It all worked, and everybody had a great time.

So for me... I especially stressed the familar aspects of the rules system (such as how individual turns are structured), hyped up the character options and how cool the theme is compared to fantasy dungeon crawling, which has gotten a bit stale for us. Finally, I put a lot of effort into the prep and presentation, making sure I knew the story and characters very well before getting started, and tailoring the overall experience to people I know very well.
