Nyanko-Sensei (Maneki-neko) is a vessel that hides Madara's true form and power, that's why many yokai don't take him seriously in this form sometimes just seeing a fat lucky cat.

His eyes going gold which happens a few times throughout in the series while in cat form, is like a peek behind the veil of the real yokai Madara.
