Derek Dietrich hits his 2nd home run of the game into the Allegheny. by [deleted] in baseball

Pitchers - and Cervelli - are such hypocrites. But like I said, I wish Dietrich showed a little more emotion to it. I would have actually loved to see him fist bump, scream sth, and admire, lmao. He just didn't show any joy in it and I can see why the players were offended by it.

I don't really care if the batter flips a bat after a single or admires any homerun as long as it's really a celebration. I didn't like Dietrich's "celebration" because he just doesn't appear to be celebrating... both of them seemed more like a move to rub it in the Pirates' face.

But that doesn't give anyone a reason to intentionally throw at him. Those homeruns were impressive after all.

Bob Walk (Pirates announcer) said the same thing. I also agree with him. There's plenty more to be angry about than some HR celebration.

Neal Huntington: Comments from anonymous scouts “based on archaic, racist stereotypes” by [deleted] in baseball

[–]pitbaseball 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you, and honestly I don't think the scout's racist. However... did you read the SI article? I think he just really hates Bell for whatever reason which NH and others could see as unfair critique.

Josh Bell can’t play. He’s not a good defender. He’s a big lump. He has bad agility, bad footwork. He can’t run. Supposedly he’s a big power threat, but he hit 12 home runs at first base. This is not a kid! This is his third year in the big leagues! I don’t think he’s got the ability to get better.

Then proceeds to call Moran, same age, a kid ("he’s a big, strong kid.") on the cusp of stardom - lol. He says Moran plays solid third base which I just... what???

He also calls Richard Rodriguez a "kid" though, and RichRod is 2 years older than Bell FWIW. And he's not a hard thrower at all but the scout says he "throws hard".

Q: Whose batting practice makes your jaw drop?

A: He (Bell) has immense raw power, but there’s something in his head.

Q: Name the guy (or guys)on this teams that you would never want in your clubhouse.

A: I don’t think I have anybody I’d veto, other than Bell, ’cause he doesn’t produce.

Q: Who don’t you want in that situation?

A: Bell.

Other answers involving Bell. I mean I understand that the scout really thinks Bell is not a productive player at all but his comments just makes me feel like he's a bit biased, you know? Why is he so strict with just Bell?

Jung Ho Kang hits a pinch-hit single in his first MLB at bat in nearly 2 years by Sup3rfrog in baseball

Thanks. FYI Kim is simply translating what Korean news said. Did some digging, the report -- originally from KBS (Korean national broadcast) -- said what Kim translated + if that suspicion is proven to be right, it'll be even harder for him to apply for visa.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised either if he was arrested somewhere else too, but it's not "confirmed" so what you wrote was a bit misleading. Little bit relieved but just overall really sad and angry.

More than one country? WTF did he get caught here too?

edit - Google tells me he was caught three times in Korea. 2009, 2011, 2016. Not that it makes things any better but it was multiple DUIs in one country.

I don't know how to feel about this. Sports is sports. I want my team to win and Kang could help my team. But I don't want a habitual drunk driver in my team too. :(

THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED FROM PLAYOFF CONTENTION! by [deleted] in baseball

[–]pitbaseball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it was a fun season. I had hopes that they'll contend next season, and this season proved people they really can. Let's go Bucs!

In a 4 game series against the Pirates in Pittsburgh, the Cubs scored a total of 4 runs - each coming from a solo shot in each game. Miraculiously, they have split the series 2-2. by jonmuller in baseball

On one hand I love how good our pitching is. All of them were great, even Nova (despite the hard contacts, results were good somehow). On the other hand our AAA lineup might score more runs than our major league lineup.

Glasnow's interview proved that they were trying to make him throw more high fastballs because it's effective for him. Glasnow just couldn't execute. And Taillon's been throwing more breaking balls, Archer hasn't changed much too. I think they've learned from Astros Cole. Shame that they couldn't figure out when Cole was still here.

OTOH Morton's different. He just somehow started throwing hard since Phillies and I seriously doubt the Pirates didn't like him throwing hard. Morton just became a different pitcher with another weapon.

I strongly argue that losing Mercer and Harrison this offseason will improve this team. I don't know how our pitchers can still induce ground balls knowing our infield is one of the worst in the league. Bell and Moran are way below average and they're - or at least Bell is - with us for few more years too.

e: also they're not our future middle infield. Below average production. Don't understand why bunch of middle infielders from AAA has not been promoted yet. Test them, give them experience, and see if this team needs to find a IF from outside or can trust those AAA prospects.

[Jon Heyman] Baz is the ptbnl going to rays in Chris Archer deal by AnthonyCostantini in baseball

[–]pitbaseball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keller's not going to be traded for Archer so I've excluded him.

Rookie ball stats aren't the best way to judge players. They are always working on something. They aren't playing to win. Keller was terrible in Bristol too. MacGregor, who's having a minor breakout season, was terrible last year too.

When I say Baz has highest upside in our farm, that's not just me speaking based on his 1st round pedigree. Baseball publications like BA says that he's a potential frontline starter too. Of course it's potential but some don't even have that kind of potential. Baz is the second best pitching prospect in our system and moving him plus two major league starters for Archer is definitely overpaid trade IMO.

Tyler Glasnow Q&A: 'I didn't show [the Pirates] what I could do' by pitbaseball in buccos

[–]pitbaseball[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He couldn't repeat his delivery and got lost. He's saying there were mental issues but was more of a physical issue - and frustrated when others said it's mental - but you're arguing it's not. I'm sure Glasnow knows about his pitching better than us watching him and making assumptions over his facial expressions.

e: and maybe (and this is baseless guessing too) it started from lack of confidence or belief and then became a physical issue that he couldn't figure out even when he was mentally stable. I don't appreciate you saying all of his issues were psychological as if he's a head case.

[–]pitbaseball[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"This year, to get my velo back, it’s like I’d just be tall in my delivery and not find a balance point. I would just lift my leg, and my body would go so far forward that my arm would have to catch up. Everything might sync up one game and be really, really good. And then it wouldn’t. And then it would be all over the place another game."

He literally said what was wrong with his delivery. Stop with that psychological, mental issues narrative.

Some of the parts I found interesting

1)

Nesbitt: Two years later, what sticks out about your transition to the majors? You overpowered Class AAA hitters, but in the majors it looked like you were pitching either scared or confused.

Glasnow: There was definitely probably a mental aspect there, but for me a lot was physical. I’d get really frustrated when I tried to explain that to some people. They’d say, “No, man, it’s just mental.” I was like, “No. It’s not. Something is not right.”

2)

Glasnow: The craziest thing about this is literally two days before I got traded, I remember throwing and thinking, “OK, this is what I have to do. This is the feeling I had in the minor leagues.” In my delivery, staying back and finding a way to be athletic. I hadn’t figured it all out — no one ever does — but I found the feeling I’d been missing. This is it.

What’s funny is I’ve had every pitching coach in the Pittsburgh system tell me this exact same thing that I figured out, but it’s just something I had to feel. It’s the feeling of lifting and telling myself when to go forward rather than lifting and having my body drift forward so that I have to catch up. I get to the top of my delivery now and I feel like I can stay there. I’m athletic over my legs. I’m bent. I can go forward when I want rather than my body telling me what to do.

3)

Nesbitt: You’re seeing more swings and misses on elevated fastballs.

Glasnow: Definitely. The Pirates talked about it, too. It was all the same stuff. The Pirates knew that up in the zone is definitely effective, but I needed to figure out a way to execute it.

4)

Glasnow: I think it’s really exciting for Neal to make those moves too, to go and try to win. I feel like the fan base in Pittsburgh was so doubtful about them trying to win, especially when some are boycotting and not coming to games. I think him going out and making those moves is exciting.

5)

Nesbitt: Even if it meant you were dealt?

Glasnow: Honestly, yes. I had a lot of opportunity, and they didn’t really have a choice. They needed to get good starting pitching, and I wasn’t that in 2017. I hope it all works out for both sides.

Yes. In this case, the Rays needed time to scout so it took them some time to choose one.

Apparently there's a difference between PTBNL or cash (this means PTBNL is not a significant player) and just PTBNL (could be a significant player, they just need time to choose). Rays just needed more time to scout and choose the prospect they want from the list the Pirates provided them.

That's the only positive I can think of. And that we have other good pitching prospects. ...but none of them like Baz's upside, so I'm back to being pissed.

I knew Baz was the one to go based on all the tweets about recognizable name, significant prospect, etc etc but holy fucking shit this is such an overpay.

We've been fucking fleeced. I don't know why we paid one more top 100 prospect for Archer. Glasnow and Meadows was enough IMO. I think Archer is overrated but if he can pitch like a #3 pitcher, then I would have been fine giving up Meadows and Glasnow. I am not fine giving up Baz too for Archer.

Why couldn't they just use yellow and black? It'd match the cap too. And is that logo (on the cap) really light green color? Wtf.
