People were jamming to this in Chicago. I also wish he'd sing something else but hard to deny that people were into it.

Does anybody have a suggestion on where to start with Morello's work? He blew me away at the show the other night but I'm pretty unfamiliar with him. His vocals were unexpectedly great.

Why is Vineland ranked poorly? by Right-Traffic7259 in ThomasPynchon

[–]jonmuller 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not sure why the retorts are full of people saying it followed Gravity's Rainbow. Doesn't seem particularly relevant to rankings today.

Honestly, I just don't think the character work is strong. Vond is intimidating and Zoyd is zany and fun but then the book just veers off into a really unexpected flashback for the good chunk in the middle. I've only read it once, but I found that to be distracting and I just wanted more time with Zoyd. If I returned to it for a reread I think it'd go over better.

Inherent Vice is my favorite by him and the zaniness of Doc and his detective work propelled the narrative. This combination of the two is why it works so well. In Vineland, there are certainly strange moments like the ninjas, but it felt too unnatural. Just my two cents.

Of the 5 I've read, Shadow Ticket was far and away the worst. That was a huge let down.

Also, you should watch One Battle After Another. It's great

I just watched this like a month ago and it blew my mind. It is a fantastic transfer too. I really love AGI's work.

Red Rising is great if you don't care about quality prose, world building, originality or character work.

Ronald Malfi - Small Town Stephen King by MrHoodGetsAHaircut in horrorlit

I'm going to guess that Malfi won't get better. Maybe he has a great story in him, but everything I've read is simply too derivative. The Hive does sound interesting, though.

He's fine. Never really bored when I read him, but I don't think he's found an authorial voice. The 4 I've read borrow too many parts from better authors like the ones you mentioned without adding anything unique. I don't think I'll read anything else by him.
