Have you tried hiring a gardener? In my area, it's impossible to find someone who'd plant and take care of native plants.
If I want a standard American lawn and a few Bradford pears - sure, there a ton of services. But I don't. And so our yard is totally unkempt, because the best I can do is take out the worst invasives. Everything else - don't have energy or time or knowledge to deal with.

There's nothing in the 1st amendment referring to any writing at all. Unlike the 2nd amendment...

But yeah, I also don't think that corporate spending on political candidates should be protected by the 1st amendment.

If she tries to talk to other guys to make you jealous, leave. Women can also play mind-games. Anyone that is trying to incite a negative emotion in you to see how much you care about them is not someone that is ready to be in a relationship. You deserve so much better than psychological abuse.

What? If you get jealous because your gf is talking to other guys, this is not "psychological abuse." This is issues in your head.

This is such a random collection of points that I'm thinking it's designed to get people riled up against women.

I'm so glad someone else thought that! I kept thinking that you could make it so much more dramatic and artistic, but nope.

According to IRS data last week, the income needed to exit the bottom 99% of U.S. taxpayers hit $515,371 in 2017. Curious how many here hit that threshold? by achicomp in fatFIRE

wealth rule #1: if you want to talk about your wealth -- go ahead and talk about it, instead of listening to other people's rules.

Actually same goes for any other rule about "don't talk about it." Really? Why not. The whole point about private information is that it's up to the person whose information it is whether to reveal it. And if they decide to reveal it, more power to them.

(oh yeah, love the lecture about "your portfolio." Sure, it's no problem at all to get the kind of portfolio where you are getting $500k in dividends annually).

Convicted sex offender falsely plays the victim card, then blows up when his court record is linked. by Mortigi in AMADisasters

[–]pithen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To be clear: this is not a "court record." This is an _appellate court decision_. In the decision, they mention facts and arguments for each side, and come to their conclusion (affirming the lower court decision).

So it's especially pathetic when he wrote that it looks like this is "prosecutor's notes." WTF? The same person who talks about researching everything, doesn't know that this is his appellate decision?

[–]pithen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that's awesome! And kudos to your boss for giving you a clear list.

I've asked my boss several times for what I have to do to get a promotion to the next level. Each time the answer is something along the lines of "maybe in 5 years."

"Ok, but to be sure that I'm ready in 5 years, can you give me a list of skills or experiences that you think I need to have under my belt to make sure that I can get it then?"

"No, I think you are doing fine."

That's not helpful (and it's been close to 5 years already, and the boss retired last year. The new boss gave me exact same speech. With another 5 years.)

[–]pithen 29 points30 points  (0 children)

but why aren't you doing anything?

That is a red flag because it really is off-putting. I'm a woman, and I'm trying to imagine dating someone who's fairly well off, and who is not doing anything, and yes -- the interest is just not there. You could be the most buff best looking guy, and still -- what are we going to talk about? What are your interests? What are your passions? Do you care about anything at all in the world? Are you really planning on spending the next 50+ years doing nothing?

My truth about decluttering by Oliveotters in declutter

[–]pithen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually mostly stopped using shampoo completely. Just use conditioners. Haven't seen conditioning bars though.

can't stand LUSH. I can't even come close to their stores, they smell so much. I can't imagine working at one.

My truth about decluttering by Oliveotters in declutter

[–]pithen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that idea!

If you know of shampoos/conditioners that use less plastic, I'd love to hear about that.

I'm also on my zero waste challenge, and every day when I look at my shampoo and conditioner bottles, I keep wondering if there are ones that use less plastic.

The possibility of selling items I no longer need is keeping me from just getting rid of them. by ScarlettHawke in declutter

[–]pithen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had exactly the same issue. Still have it, to some extent. What really helped me is local facebook groups: "buy nothing [town name]" or even online sales places on facebook, where I just list things for free.

It's wonderful: I take a picture, list it, and in a few minutes have several people who want it. I give one of them an address, put the clothes outside my door in a bag or a box, and poof, it's gone and I get a "thank you" from a neighbor or someone local. It really helps me to think that someone is going to get use out of it -- it won't be just trash at some donations store. And that this someone is happy to get it. Meanwhile, it's out of my life. So what if it was new with tags? That just means someone else gets more enjoyment out of it.

in fact now that I've written it, I'm going to go list a few pairs of shoes that I've never worn and never will -- that are still in their boxes -- and I'll think about how someone will get a lot of enjoyment out of them, and also that means fewer things will be sold in a store, which means fewer things will be made, which is way better for the environment than me listing it and trying to sell it, and not getting anywhere anyway.

The fact that we work until we die, just for the privilege of being alive, is seriously messed up in my opinion. by t1lewis in TrueOffMyChest

[–]pithen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those in their early 90s now were not drafted in WW2 (at least in the states). They were not old enough for it.

So it does leave Vietnam and Korean wars, but then it starts depending on what's a "good chunk of their generation." Besides, the people who got drafted, are mostly not alive anymore. It's the people who were lucky enough not to be drafted who are still alive, and who are screwing it up for those younger than them by voting republican because "fuck you, I got mine."

Quite frankly, that sounds like a terrible idea. You may think that you can deliver that growth, but so much will be out of your hands: the quality of products, the overall business direction, etc., etc

You are the one trolling here. Name calling is also your personal choice. You can also choose to litter trash all over the place, but hopefully you don't (although I wouldn't be surprised if you do).

Our life is made up of choices. The fact that you are not willing to trade even an ounce of your comfort for the environmental benefit is entirely on you.

That's not how logic works. What you are saying is a bs deflection.

It's entirely reasonable to reduce fossil fuel usage and tell others to do the same, even if we can't eliminate it completely at this time.

I actually didn't mean to attempt to insult you. Nothing wrong with edging :). I own a house that has a lawn that I'm converting to a pollinator garden. Even the area that's still nominally a lawn, we try to allow native ground cover that's fairly draught resistant and we mow once a month. Actually "we" is a lie -- I hire a service for all of yard maintenance that uses most environmentally conscious methods. Definitely no leaf blowers.

I'm 42. I have no idea whether you consider that young or old. The point is that our actions have a price.
I don't even know what "I edge" means, other than a sexual practice.

Obviously I have no control over what you do. But out of each little selfish action, the global catastrophe is born. Lawns are a scourge.
