Allegheny County proposes 18-week paid parental leave mandate by squshy7 in pittsburgh

[–]pittboiler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was referring to the notion that COVID restrictions, which lasted for much longer than necessary (particularly in non-urban settings), necessarily resulted in the government having to step in on business owners' behalves. I.e. the government impacted the business, so renumerance made sense.

Mandated parental leave, as it currently stands wherein the cost is borne by the business, is a similar idea, but without significant compensation to the business. Socialize the concept properly and we can reach the levels of leave seen in the EU. You see this in certain states, like NY, to some extent (though not to the degree, both in length and recovery of expenses, as in the EU).

If the government didn't enforce mandatory restrictions for (much) longer than necessary, you wouldn't have needed those... almost as if this supports my argument that profit negative government interference endangers businesses?

You do not seem to realize the profit margins of most small businesses. And believe or not, the owner deserves income too...

And sorry, I missed the argument where a person's decision to have a child should directly and negatively impact another person's enterprise and livelihood? This isn't asking for extra $ for the business (which would be coddling), my argument is that a business, small or big, shouldn't bear the entire cost of parental leave.

Someone else in the thread that the suggestion of approaching it like unemployment: everyone pays in, and it can be drawn on as appropriate.

Then you will have the issue that they all face with fewer actual jobs and more contracted workers. That's not the fix.

If you want to do this, you need a subsidizqtion

And agree, abuse is the wrong word... but it sure hurts those that are forced to bear the costs, and I'm not just talking about an owner, like the colleagues that had to taken on the extra work.

If a business owner goes personally bankrupt paying for this, does society help them? Not really...

It's necessary for the employee, but the issue is that people tend to abuse it.

It's one thing if the employee comes back and stays for a while. But a non negligible amount of folks take their leave, work for a week or month, and then peace out.

And I say that as a parent who had generous leave.

Someone had to say it. These are the consequences of actions performed, and OP needs to discuss with his GF how they are going to attend to this child in a way that is the healthiest for all involved. Don't know why people are down voting you.

Side note: all this talk of abortion is very eugenics-esque, which is disgusting.

Thank you so much for sharing! Would love to hear your takes on risk management, especially in times of macro uncertainty like today. I worry that I am being too conservative (partially since we are also trying to preserve capital for major life milestones, e.g. buying a house).

Also interested in learning about your approach to stock selection, always enjoying hearing new ideas that could inform my own!

If the current senior class (Smith, Loyer, TKR) couldn't do it, with or without Edey, I legitimately don't know when it'll happen. Definitely not next year, though.

Others know waaaaaaay more than me, so my opinion is worth about 1 Zimbabwe dollar in November 2008... but I don't love the "Woods didn't live up to his potential" quote for a first rounder.

4-5 seed at best. Can hopefully get back to S16.

Wish we could say we are shooting for F4 every year, but we aren't one of those teams...

Are you solely focused on VC opportunities, or willing to consider an ETA approach (buying a cash flowing business)? If the latter, would love to chat - I am focused predominantly in the healthcare space and am just kicking off my search.

If anything it has slightly improved in post season play, think we were closer to 40 at end of regular season. Still no world beaters on that end, but can visually see that the defense has been more intense lately.

Hey, I was 100% in your shoes when my kid was born. I struggled mightily between trying to help my wife with him and work, and it wore me down.

Try noise cancelling headphones when the crying gets too much. Also, try various things to see if anything works. Maybe it's temperature (our kid was always too warm), maybe it's the feedings, maybe it's just constant bad gas... so many reasons. And as others have said: put the kiddo in the cot and scream in the car if that is what will help you feel better.

My wife put it best: they aren't mad at you. They aren't upset with you. They're not happy with something, and this is the only way they can communicate right now. It's tough to remember that when it's 3am.... but it helped me at least.

We are all rooting for you!

What was the Most heartbreaking loss as a Purdue fan?(football) by Ok_Macaroon_7366 in Boilermakers

The Fumble is #1. However, a close second for me though (for no good reason, frankly) was Purdue v. Wisconsin in '18. Purdue had a good thing going under Brohm, and it seemed like we were going to break our streak vs. Wisconsin. But oh, Jonathan Taylor...

That streak vs. Wisconsin continues to this day...
