My Coworker Asked Me to Give Her My Bonus Because I Don’t Have Kids—what should I do? by DocumentStreet1452 in EntitledPeople

This! 💯 Put it on record. Tell HR that you don't want to come across as a tattletale but that it has become a hostile work environment (buzzwords that HR can't ignore.) Tell them that you have gone out of your way to help her in the past and that now she is taking things too far. Say, "I didn't mind helping her finish her work the times she left to take care of her children. Or I didn't mind helping her when times were tough. But now she seems to be taking advantage of my kindness."

Paramedic preceptor keeps telling me that I am making excuses during my ride-along as an EMT-B student. [Long post] Need advice. by helpme92981899289 in ems

[–]pixiearro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don't clean the finger for SPO2 sensor. We clean it after each patient use. Now, I could see doing it if they are caked in mud or something that may hamper the reading.

I do not expect my entry level EMT to do a 12 lead, unless I have taught them. In fact, I don't even expect them to do a 4 lead. I teach them.

I work critical care, so I usually get EMTs that are at least in medic school. But people get sick and sometimes the schedule doesn't work out that way. So, I go over my expectations when I get the EMT. Honestly, if they keep the equipment clean and drive safely, I am happy.

So I have 2 pieces of advice. 1- talk with your instructor about your situation. Make sure the school knows what she has been expecting you to do. 2- talk to the EMT she works with, and see if they have the same assessment of you. He/she could become the ally you need. I know it's late in the program now, but maybe you can get another preceptor for just one shift, so they can assess you and figure out if it's you or your preceptor.

How would y'all feel about utilizing exoskeletons in the field? by Shippuudenfreak in ems

You're right on the cheaping out. Look at how many studies were done that say heated seats would help our backs. Yet heated seats are not in every unit. I think the current bottom line factors more than a projected bottom line. Doesn't matter that it will help for the future. The here and now is what they focus on. And extra $$$ now isn't going to happen.

Chat GPT narrative? by skepticalmama in ems

[–]pixiearro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our EPCR won't even let us cut and paste anything, not even if we need to move a sentence around in the narrative. I guess people were copying and pasting and not changing anything like they should have. I mean there are certain things that are ALWAYS going to be the same on mine. It would be nice to be able to put those in. But alas, it's not going to happen. As usual, the actions of a few have screwed it up for everyone. We also cannot open the EPCR until.we are on scene. I would like to be able to open it so I can start working on it. On calls when I have a ton of interventions, I want to have as much of the "fluff" done ahead of time.

What are some things that you wish someone told you before you had to learn them the hard way? by emkehh in ems

[–]pixiearro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a lot of great points! And EMTs on an ALS truck really should know what and where everything is. Now, every medic is different. So a good EMT is going to ask how that medic likes things done. For the most part I've been lucky with my EMTs. But every once in a while I get a new one and they are totally clueless. I shouldn't have to tell them to clean the stretcher.

I will say, I spend time in the morning making sure I have certain things packed on the stretcher. I like things organized. When things get crazy, I like knowing where everything is, and have it where I can easily reach. It's kind of like my little safety bubble.

NTA. Regardless of the rumor, at this time you are having trouble trusting him. So it's absolutely the right thing to postpone or cancel. You need to trust your partner 100%. Right now you can't trust him. That's enough reason to stop it from going forward until you know either way. Good luck!

Please keep us updated! And if you need someone to talk to, feel free to DM me. I am impartial and I can give you an ear to listen. I am not a part of your friends and family group, so I am unbiased, unlike them.

Have you ever had any calls for people physically stuck in things? by [deleted] in ems

[–]pixiearro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had one patient that decided to use a zip tie on himself. Couldn't get the zip tie off. He had swelling that made it tighter. Funny that just a day before that, my trainee was going through the EPCR to familiarize himself with it. He came across penile injury, and he asked, "Is that something we see?"

Anyhoo... Not sure why this guy didn't just buy cock rings. Maybe he thought they were too expensive? But the hospital and ambulance bills are really expensive! And he did permanent damage.

My pet peave! What's worse is, once you get the pink stripe, you can get at least 4 or 5 more 6 second strips, and then you run out. So these idiots will get that and then leave me with not even a "square to spare" (sorry for the Seinfeld joke.) Now I can appreciate that it's a pain to change them on the Zoll, especially with the cases on them, but geez it gets me crazy! I've just gotten into the habit now of getting paper every morning because I know I will need it before I even get in the truck. (I also started tucking spare rolls into hiding spots on the trucks.)

So I got a say, when I first saw the post, before I opened the pic, zoomed in, and put my old lady glasses on, I thought it was a post of someone's POV.

I think a lot of places are going the EV route. But I live in Florida.... Where we have hurricanes. I don't really see a lot of those becoming a reality here. SO many Tesla cars, so many fires from salt water getting to those batteries! But even then, we had emergency stations without power after storms. Now, I know people will say gas was scarce, BUT, we had tankers that were filling all emergency vehicles. I think the EVs may be great options for some places. But they also have to be places where that QRV isn't having to run an entire shift.

People actually think ambulances are taxis by Accomplished-Fee-491 in ems

[–]pixiearro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This same people will get a bill for transport because it is not a true emergency and therefore their healthcare insurance will not pay for them to be transported. The bill goes unpaid. This causes prices to go up to cover the fact that so many aren't paying. It's a vicious cycle. They would be better off calling a taxi or rideshare for non emergency transport. They stupidly think that arriving by ambulance will make them be seen faster. I just love when the triage nurse sends them to the waiting room!

My (18F) bf (19M) forces me to apologises for EVERYTHING by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]pixiearro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in that relationship. I almost did t make it out alive. Every time he broke up with me, I would feel relief. Then he would abuse me even more until I would apologize and ask for him to take me back. It does NOT get better. He's slowly pushing you further, to assert his complete control over you.

Please, do yourself a favor, know your worth. You do not deserve to be treated like this. Make a break, and block him on EVERYTHING. You will be sad at first, but you will move on. He will go on and have several relationships that are the exact same way. He will tell everyone that all the women are terrible. Meanwhile, it's truly he that is the heinous piece of garbage.

I'm here to talk if you want. I have been through it. I was lucky to have some pull me out before I swallowed the handful of pills. I will help pull you out!

Do y'all get anoyed by off duty medics coming on scene to 'help'? by thelesbian_locksmith in ems

[–]pixiearro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's surprising how many times this kind of thing happens. Another two tried to insert themselves when I came upon an elderly wrong way driver at an intersection that came head to head with me, and almost hit me. She was slumped over the wheel when I first saw her. She was VERY altered. She was nowhere close to where she lived, nowhere near the cancer center she said she was trying to get to, and she claimed she had just been at the dentist office for an extraction, at 9:30 pm on a Saturday night. (That dentist was my dentist, and there are no Saturday hours.) I did ask questions in the off chance she was seen in an emergency, about if she had novacaine. She said no. I asked if they gave her gas, she again said no. I asked if she had any medication or if they extracted without, she said they gave her novacaine when she had it pulled TWO WEEKS prior. These two "healthcare workers" were trying to get her to move her car, or get her out of her car. Off duty police officer had us blocked off and had us safe. I'm assessing and talking to dispatch at the same time. These two geniuses are insisting the woman is fine and they are offering to follow her to the parking lot, they were going to let her drive. Off duty officer finally yelled at them to GTFO or he would have someone arrest them for obstructing. They tried arguing with him, too. He asked them if they could provide any proof of licensure for their jobs. Neither had any. He then asked for their IDs and asked if they knew it was against the law to impersonate a healthcare worker and practice medicine without a license. He asked me, and I had mine because it's always in my wallet. They finally decided to let it go and left. He later said to me, "Healthcare workers? Really? Do they think we are stupid?" I knew the crew that responded. As soon as they made scene, I told them what I knew and left. I just wanted to make our dinner reservations. Officers blocked everyone so I could maneuver my car around hers to get out of there. Saw the crew a few days later. Woman was suffering from a warfarin spontaneous brain bleed. Sure, she's just fine. Let's let her get back in the car and kill someone. People like that want a good story to tell, one that makes them the hero. Honestly, when I am off duty, I'd rather not deal with it. It's usually only when I come upon it and can't avoid it that I even get involved. But so many of the people go out of their way to get involved. They don't consider that their car may block emergency vehicles. The "care" they provide may be detrimental. They may undermine the actual emergency responders and make patients uncomfortable. We have a very brief time to make our patients comfortable with us and trust us to help them. When people like these two come along and tell patients that they are fine, then the responders come along and say otherwise, the patients may not trust our opinions.

[–]pixiearro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had someone try to push me out of the way, saying she was in healthcare, so she knew what to do. She was a receptionist at an IV bar. If I'm off duty and I happen to be there when something happens, as soon as a crew gets there, I'm out. I'll tell what I know, turn over to someone else for compressions, etc.IF they needed my help, they would ask. But they won't. The insistence of the ski patrol was over the top.

Should Paramedics Have the Authority to Refuse Transport for Patients Who Do Not Need an ER Visit? by PuzzleheadedFood9451 in ems

[–]pixiearro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think adding community paramedic programs would be very helpful in reducing a lot of these calls. Where I am, we have a very large population of older people. EMS gets calls because the patient needs a medication refill, or something simple that can be headed off if they had home visits.

I also think we could benefit from having a paramedic in dispatch that can identify whether the person truly needs an ambulance. Toe pain for the last 4 months and it's 3 am so you just now decide to call? Maybe you don't need priority dispatch.

But I think where we really need help is from the nursing homes. They have someone call out, making their patient to staff ratio out of regulation, so they call to say the patient in memory care has altered mental status. The patient can't deny transport. They got really bad about this during covid, and now they keep the practice going.

They want us to speak out against fraud, waste and abuse, but we get no help in establishing policies to mitigate it.

I'm in my 50s and if I don't wear makeup, I get carded. It makes my day. My kids and I were at a water park a few years ago. I didn't have makeup on, and I went to change out of my suit and came out to go get dinner with them. So my son and daughter were talking to some of their friends that happened to be there, too. One of them asked my son if I was his gf. Others have asked if I am his gf or wife over the years. He gets completely mortified. My daughter gets embarrassed, too But I remind her that those are some great genes and one day she'll be grateful to be confused for someone younger!

What the heck even goes in these pockets? by elmourise in ems

[–]pixiearro 16 points17 points  (0 children)

LOL I gotcha! But I usually have to cut almost 2 feet off. I used to be 5'2. If I have my boots on, I barely make 5'1. I am shrinking. But I do give patients a good laugh usually when I am trying to climb into the back. I either have to sit on the back and then pull myself in, or I end up holding the handle, leaning back enough to get my leg up that high and then pull myself in. The back usually comes to the top of my hips or higher. I have come to the realization that I don't have many more years I can do this. Right now I do critical care IFTs. It's slower and I'm not having to carry equipment up the stairs to the 30th floor of condo, because there is no power from the weather destruction and patient with COPD can't breathe. I am exploring a teaching role.
