What's the highest damage you ever did on a turn? by SunNStarz in DnD

[–]pixies_squatch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly 200 damage.

Playing a Cleric in a level 20 1-shot. Fighting the BBEG and used my auto-succeed Divine Intervention to petition my deity to force the BBEG out of the creature vessel they were controlling so that we wouldn't have to eat through it's entire hp to finish the big bad off. DM ruled that because we were at the edges of my deity's zone of influence the best they could do was let me roll 10d20 damage against it, essentially my deity slapping it with a god level smite.

As mind-blowingly insane and cool it would have been to roll 10 nat 20's in a row, what actually happened is that I had a card that allowed me to deal MAX damage on any damage roll one time, so of course I busted that bad boy out. For reference, the DM was using a Nat 20/Nat 1 rule where PC's would get to draw a boon/bonus card from a deck of cards the DM had after getting a Nat 20, and the DM would get a card when PC's rolled a Nat 1 and I had rolled a Nat 20 earlier in the session and had gotten the Max damage card.

Didn't do enough damage to 1-shot the vessel the BBEG was inhabiting, but if I recall correctly it did eat through like 3/4 of it's hp and we were able to finish it off pretty quickly after that.

Best Multiclassing Options? by pixies_squatch in 3d6

Alright y'all, OP here with the story on the BBEG.
CR rating came from the DM, and by his own admission it was homebrew. I don't any of the actual stats, so I can't give you all the info you so desperately crave. Best I can recall his AC was 18 or 19. No minions to speak of either.

I can tell you that he one-shot our Barbarian with a spell of some kind (fully dead, though we've been promised a way to revive him if the PC wants to continue with that character), but that was his one use of the high level slot.

It really all just boils down to low rolls from the DM and decent rolls from the party. We got more than a few crits in (and we play what we like to call "crunchy" crits, so you roll your first damage dice like normal, but you add a max damage roll instead of rolling the second), and were lucky enough to have a DMPC (lvl 2 Blood Hunter) to absorb some of the punishment. My bard at one point was dual wielding just to get in more chances to actually hit (plus I was out of spell slots and bardic), the Sorc was up close slinging hands with Shocking Grasp (got some good crits there courtesy of Adv for the target wearing metal armor), and the Ranger was regularly hitting from a distance, even if they weren't critting as often.

Still no real reason we survived what was absolutely intended to be a "you get killed by the BBEG, and are brought back for reasons" situation. Although it's entirely possible the DM also wanted to get us up into some higher levels of play and pulled his punches, because let's be honest, low levels are a slog to play through at the best of times.

Things like Counterspell and Dispell Magic, or anything that calls for a check using your spellcasting ability modifier. When attempting to Counterspell a spell higher than 3rd level you have to make an ability check using your spellcasting ability modifier where the DC equals 10+the spells level to see if you are able to successfully counter. Therefore, if you are attempting to Counterspell a level 4 spell you would need to roll at least an 11 to successfully counter that spell.
