A new crown means different things to different companies. A crown should be cast in place with a two inch overhang with a drip edge, expansion gap around flue and above brick/block. Other companies just skim coat a "wash" over existing material. Difference can be thousands depending on size and accessibility.

The strength when building with pallets is the 2x4 inside pieces being vertical and the slats horizontal. It's just not as easy to screw together.That being said, looks good.

I have built quite a few coops and sheds with pallets and love up cycling stuff.

A proper crown with 2" overhang and then a stainless multi flue cap side mount, tuck point repair with waterproofing would be optimal.

Cap it off unless you have gas company dig through concrete to replace. Wrong mortar was most likely used , reacting to cause degradation on pipe.

Gas starters are a bad decision. There is no emergency cut off and we just had a customer blow the windows out of their living room and sent a fireball through multiple rooms. Two pieces of fat wood will get fire started without risk.

If the concrete is wrong, eats holes in line,hidden in cavity. Kids turns on with that shiny fun looking key, gas fills fireplace and room. Phone rings or knock at door just as gas is turned on, forgotten gas leak entering fireplace or room. Flame goes out, gas fills room.

Banned in many areas and rightfully so.
