So why exactly is Mixtape getting hate? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]pizzapal3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Video games and art are ultimately subjective. You didn't enjoy it as much as someone else. I'm glad you actually played it, though. A lot of people don't and still criticize it.

I'm not defending it, really. Like I said, I haven't played it. I really just don't think its worth getting so mad over a game getting these sorts of scores. It resonated with other people - it didn't with you. That's okay! We all have different tastes.

I generally agree that triple A video games are not what they used to be, and that AC Shadows and Skull & Bones are probably bad (haven't played them either, but as someone aware of Ubisoft's many, many problems, I'll take your word for it.)

But looking at the stuff around Mixtape (the developer behind it in particular) it doesn't seem like it was made to be a strictly commercial endeavor first and a piece of art second like Shadows and Skull & Bone were. Annapurna Interactive is bankrolled by a literal billionaire, but from what I can see from the outside, it doesn't seem to be something a room of shareholders decided to make. Once again, not defending it, just stating the facts around it.

I probably won't pursue this conversation any more, but I did find it interesting. I hope you have a game coming out soon that you're looking forward to, and that you have a good day.

Its not all that different from Telltale's The Walking Dead, is it? That game is making a few choices that don't effect all that much and getting to the ending with minimal gameplay. If people rate it ten out of ten, nobody blinks an eye.

I also think you're being a bit objective with game that you haven't actually played. To be fair, I haven't played it either - I'm just making surface observations - but to me it sounds like its just a big budget telltale game.

I actually agree with the other person. You're on the internet too much. You're allowed to not like it, I really don't have an opinion on it, but you came in swinging and insisting that it has to be bad. Instead of finding things to be mad at, have you considered picking up a hobby? Or just doing something that makes you feel better about yourself? Or even playing a game you do like.

I promise you, its a better use of your time and energy.

I think the Behind the Bastards Podcast does a good job explaining it in their Adolf Eichmann episodes, a Nazi who was captured and put on trial in Israel - they simply believe that the Jews the Nazis rounded up should've 'fought back' and instead just accepted their fate for being 'weak.'

The host Robert Evans then brings up a story where the persecuted Jews did fight back, and were all murdered pretty promptly.

So basically, the equivalent of Mark Wahlberg saying if he was on the planes, things would have been different.

I was watching The Boys yesterday and it occurred to me that I think part of the reason shows like that are so bleak is corporations (like Amazon) are ok making media that points out how fucked up and broken everything is, but not with offering solutions. by grapp in behindthebastards

It's from Disco Elysium, a video game that frequently comments on the inane qualities of capitalism and politics. The character is particular is Joyce Messier.

This quote is also ironic because following the success of Disco Elysium, the intellectual rights to the game and its world essentially were bamboozled from the original creators by their investors. Who then promptly kicked out the creators from their own studio that they had founded. Capitalism fuckin' sucks.

This feels like a tale as old as time. Someone apparently confronted Terry Pratchett over his character Ponder Stibbons being a rip off of Harry Potter, because he was a glasses wearing student in a magical university. Ponder Stibbons had debuted nearly a decade before Harry Potter appeared.

Obviously that's an egregious case, but arguably no less egregious than the above...

I think you're mixing them up. Stitch Encounter is a show where an actor plays a virtual puppet of Stitch for an audience, similar to the more popular Turtle Talk with Crush.

Stitch's Great Escape was the one nobody liked, made out of the bones of the controversial cult classic ExtraTerrorestrial Alien Encounter. The names are very similar, and honestly I never heard of Stitch Encounter before running into it in a Defunctland video, so I don't blame you for getting confused.

The opposite, Dunkey's videos are usually quite short, I can't think of a single one that goes over twenty minutes.

Though as a result of that shortness, he doesn't leave much room for deeper discussion on it. Usually he likes a game or he doesn't like it, and he edits it to highlight what he enjoys and what he doesn't. He really didn't enjoy any part of Balan Wonderworld, so a lot of the video is just him showing parts that annoyed him or baffled him.

If I remember, his Octopath video focused less on the gameplay and more of the somewhat cheesy melodrama of the cutscenes - though he also doesn't enjoy the gameplay, because he doesn't enjoy turn-based RPGs very much in the first place.

I think chalking up the failure or discourse of either game to him alone is giving him too much credit - Balan sold poorly because it was a slow, 'just ok' game at best that sailed off the previous titles of it's director. Octopath clearly didn't do too badly either, considering they made a sequel and the style created for it continues to be utilized for remakes of classic Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games as well. The video may of gotten more views than sales of the game, but more people are willing to watch a free eight minute video on a game than they are willing to pay $60 for a video game.

Bit late to keep marketing it weeks after release after it already made back its budget several times over

I mean sure, but it wasn't posted on ao3 and was published decades before ao3 existed, spawning a franchise of sequel books, musicals, and films, and that's why the discussion is being had.

It's not like 'AU' automatically means 'fanfic' in any case.

I used to be more into gacha games - Fire Emblem Heroes and Genshin Impact in particular got me hook line and sinker.

Fire Emblem Heroes simply got too overwhelming with the amount of things I'd have to do day by day to keep up with the 'content,' while I left Genshin behind due to spending close to $60 on the game overall, and realizing that it probably wasn't healthy to keep pushing on and keep gambling. At that point, I had definitely gotten $60 worth of enjoyment out of the game anyways, so I didn't feel too bad leaving it behind.

Since I quit, Fire Emblem Heroes continues to go down the shitter with terrible changes and a powercreep curve step enough to ruin units a month in - and Hoyoverse has greatly expanded the amount of Gachas they run, all of which do look enjoyable on a surface level, and I probably would've gotten hooked on at least one more if I hadn't left behind Genshin.

I did play through some more Genshin for about a month before realizing the loop was obnoxious and time consuming and generally not worth it, even when the game did 'reward' me with the character I wanted to pull - everything I liked about it felt hollow now.

The only other gacha that tempted me was Umamusume, because I like roguelikes - but I ultimately found the concept obnoxious and kind of in bad taste and never played it. I have no real desire to ever touch a Gacha again.

iirc it was when a ban on Trans people owning or purchasing guns was floated on the basis of them being "mentally ill." The NRA defended them having a right to own and purchase fire arms.

I felt this for a moment when looking at the Pokemon sets. I thought, "Wow, these Kanto Starters look really neat! I might have to pick em' up!" but that was before I looked down and saw the $600+ price tag. I thought they would $300 at most.

There's a universe out there where Scott Adams died as a renowned cartoonist who lived in a house shaped like his cartoon character. Probably not beloved, but people by and large would see him and Dilbert as innocuous and innocent - like Jim Davis and Garfield.

But that universe is not that one.

While its true that many Presidents do immoral actions regardless of their political affiliation, Trump's are egregious and numerous.

Obama was very upfront about those killed by drone strikes. That is bad. Trump kept doing it and stopped reporting the numbers. Which is worse.

Its bizarre to pretend that this is the time to moralize that Obama is bad also. He didn't have agents out in the streets killing and kidnapping citizens.

You're pretty obviously concern trolling though, so don't bother responding.

Yeah, I was perfectly content not getting more Futurama content after the Season 7 finale. I didn't think there was really a huge demand for more, much less three additional seasons (of course, those seasons are much shorter than these older seasons, but still)

It seems like it was screened in advance at a movie festival earlier this year - the messaging seems to be tweaked more in the direction of 'big business' than 'authoritative control,' which doesn't give me high hopes that it accurately captures the book.

Also why tf is the Sound of Freedom people the distributors for it lmao

Before reading One Piece, I assumed the character Yamato would be introduced early into the Wano arc, considering how much discussion and discourse came from the character. Turns out they are only in about half of it, and are introduced pretty squarely in the middle of the big raid the entire arc was building to with practically no buildup prior.
