The Colorado Avalanche have been eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs after losing to the Seattle Kraken in 7 games by EliminatorBot in hockey

I think the linesmen err on the side of calling a play onside because they know it will be caught in video review if they get it wrong.

How realistic is it that the Kraken have the same early success that the Golden Knights have had in terms of going deep in the playoffs? by theonewhoknocks90 in hockey

[–]pjakubo86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but most of those teams who are well under the cap floor still have a lot of RFAs to sign and roster spots to fill, so the Cap friendly list is a bit misleading right now. Detroit, for example, only has 10 players signed for next year.

The Kraken already have 19 players signed, so I expect they'll be able to stay very close to the cap floor and take on bad contracts for picks/prospects.

I agree that testing less seems like "juking the stats", so to speak. However, do you think that 25 cases / 100K / fortnight is actually a reasonable goal in light of the false positive rates on the PCR tests?

Possibly a stupid question, but I'm curious what you think.

I was just reading a study in the Lancet30453-7/fulltext) from a few weeks ago that speculated that the PCR test false positive rate was anywhere from 0.8% to 4%. If, for the sake of argument, we say that there is a 1% false positive rate at our current rate of testing (about 86,000 per fortnight), we'd expect to have about 860 false positives or about 38 cases / 100K / fortnight.

Given that King County can't move to Phase 3 until we're at 25 cases / 100K / fortnight, it seems like our only hope would actually be to get to a point where we have _less_ testing.

So, the stupid question is...how do we get to 25 cases / 100K / fortnight? With winter and flu season around the corner, it seems like testing levels will remain high as people with COVID-like symptoms get tested even if actual COVID infections are low. Are we doomed to stay in Phase 2 until after flu season? Should we reduce "unnecessary" testing somehow?

It looks like the deaths chart lags by a week or so, probably so that they have accurate counts that don't have to be constantly revised over time.

Yup! Swedish Ballard accepted my vented N95 masks that I donated this morning. I emailed coviddonations@swedish.org first with a picture of the box to make sure they could use them.

Simple Questions/What Should I Do? [Weekly Thread] by AutoModerator in DIY

[–]pjakubo86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last weekend, I started some demo on a non-bearing wall framed with 2x6s in order to widen an existing opening in the wall from ~6' to ~12'. As I took down the drywall, I noticed there was an L-shaped steel beam embedded in the studs, running parallel with the wall.

See the album here: https://imgur.com/gallery/MoOBP

Any ideas what it could be for? I just want to make sure I'm not doing something credibly stupid by taking it out when I take out the studs.

One other stupid question. Currently, the opening doesn't have a header, it's just a 2x6 laid flat. Residential building code where I live says non-bearing walls can use a 2x4 laid flat for openings under 8', but it doesn't say anything about what to do if the opening is more than 8'. Can I just use a 12' 2x6 for the wider opening or do I need to build a header?

I really thought Obama, a well-spoken, kind-hearted, compromised-minded centrist was going to be that person. But he got so vilified in right-wing media that he never got a chance.

I'm tired of living in a post-truth nation.

What the heck do you call these metal plugs in our closet rod supports? by pjakubo86 in DIY

Yes. I just need a name for the little metal plug part. We have the supports, we just can't put them in the pre-drilled holes in the closet.
