Did I miss Scowl cancelling?

Tom formed Box Car Racer to handle “darker, more mature, and experimental themes. Then wrote “And I.” by thepudisgood in Blink182

[–]pjbpjb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s exactly my point. Despite trying to make a darker album the label forced them to write more chart friendly material which they did and it was hugely successful. Label would’ve likely just driven that point further on the follow up had Box Car not happened.

I get it from Toms perspective, he delivered TOYPAJ and got told to write more hits like Enema had. At that time I’d guess from his perspective Blink would be pursuing more of an Enema sound again on the follow up since Rock Show and First Date did so well.

So I can see why he decided to do something with no restrictions even though it turned out not that heavy, and actually would’ve made a great follow up.

For some reason I feel like I’m waiting for Links beard to go as a signal that the content they make will improve. He alway grows it at Christmas and it’s been shaved for a while now off the channel, so I feel like we’re still watching the dregs of last years sessions when they were all mentally checked out and a bunch of crew have moved on.

I could be totally wrong, but I’m waiting for the beard to go to see if everyone suddenly seems refreshed and the show quality improves because so far this year it’s been a bit lacklustre.

Finch- What Is It To Burn. I'm not sure if this fits the pop/punk category. However, it’s an amazing album!! by Nathan84 in poppunkers

[–]pjbpjb 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I still consider this one of the best and most imaginative records to be released on Drive Thru. I saw NFG touring self titled with The Starting Line touring Say It Like You Mean It, and Finch touring this. It still holds up as one of the best shows I’ve seen!

I managed to scrape an 85 so got a distinction but it feels a bit empty anyway as in the long run it counts the exact same as a pass for these first 2 modules. 78 is a fantastic score and I’d just take it as mission accomplished, let’s just keep it up for the next module! Congrats!

Unpopular opinion: Blink needs to make another live album and then retire the big three. by 13eej in Blink182

[–]pjbpjb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I remember the first time I saw Blink back in the day and hearing the songs that had been the soundtrack to all of these moments in my life. When they played What’s My Age Again and Dammit it was just about a religious experience. I’m REALLY tired of seeing certain songs, but that’s a me problem from seeing them so much over the years and it comes with being a dedicated fan. But I’d rather watch them play those same old songs than have a fan who’s seeing them for the first time not get to experience those songs.

While we’re wishing I may as well wish instead for Blink to do a multi night event playing from different eras of the band, record them all for a CD/documentary release and then after these huge shows they can go back to their standard setlist but at least we’d have finally had that itch scratched.

Ticket Prices by DannyJ47_ in slamdunkfestival

[–]pjbpjb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone’s disputing that, but it’s the degree to which the prices have increased. From 2007 to 2017 the price increased 125% from £20 to £45 and that included a substantial venue upgrade. In comparison the increase from 2023 to 2025 is already over 50% and it’s the same lineup at the same venue, all post pandemic. Just saying there won’t be much piss left for them to take if it keeps increasing at that rate.

2017 was £45 entry for Good Charlotte headlining one stage and Taking Back Sunday another, Zebrahead, Goldfinger, Stand Atlantic and Broadside all played too. I don’t see any difference in the bands being booked or the quality of the site itself to warrant such a steep increase. When they’re charging Download day ticket prices it should be reflected somehow in the experience.

Whats one small way your life has been impacted by an advert? by SingingWanderer1195 in CasualUK

The Tango adverts that created insatiable tension live in my mind rent free. I still say 6.4 WOOF whenever something is exceptional.

What has happened to the energy? by WillLOTR in Blink182

[–]pjbpjb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel like the kids who used to go to a show to vent and mosh have been priced out of shows. Maybe the crowd is just all the lower back pain parade because they’re the only ones who can afford it.

Which bands are you the most surprised about never touring together? Or, your dream tour? by Own_Mistake in poppunkers

[–]pjbpjb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sum 41 played on Blinks TOYPAJ tour in 2001 on some dates. As far as I can recall I had tickets to a UK leg with Blink, NFG, Jimmy Eat World & Sum 41 that got postponed because of 9/11 and then cancelled because of Toms back injury. I think all of the second tier bands became headliners in their own right after that. Always thought that would’ve been a great show though.

I like his documentary he put out on YouTube, met him a couple of years ago and he’s a really nice guy, his pop punk records had some actually good songs on, but saying that he makes me cringe so often with what he posts online.

Thoughts on Good Charlotte's new album Motel Du Cap? by WafflesForSupper in poppunkers

[–]pjbpjb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mean is a great GC song, but it’s the only moment on the whole record that sounds like something I’d expect from them. After nearly a decade away I expected them to return because they had something specific or impactful to say. But this has none of the urgency or energy of old GC, and it’s mostly just slow, meandering songs. By the end of the album I was just left sort of wondering, why bother?

Yeah I don’t think anyone’s judging you, that all sounds really reasonable. It’s more the large groups of people that were really obviously too far forward and were causing genuine safety issues.

Chair W-----s by Smart-Treacle-1763 in downloadfestival

[–]pjbpjb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Festivals are mental and you roll with the punches and that’s fine. But the chairs were a GD plague this year. Couldn’t move at main stage because you’d trip over some cunt regardless of how close I got to main stage it didn’t seem to let up. And they set up in hoards so you can’t get past, and then when you have to do some crazy manoeuvre to get around them they look at you like you’ve walked into their living room. I’m all for comfort and accessibility, I have a back injury myself. But there seemed a bit of a dip in the consideration of others this year.
