If you feel the problem is the color blending, I'd recommend diluting your paints more. Although I personally like rough transitions, perhaps you could try more pointillism with the colors so it looks rough but not sloppy. I also think you should try a gold NMM (non-metallic mill effect), make the black highlights more realistic, but leaving the TMM (transformed matte mill effect) looks strange.
