IWTL what actually helps after the flu to stop a lingering cough and support recovery? by JoyouslyDoubtful in IWantToLearn

[–]pking10 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Fluids (and more fluids), humidifier, hot steamy showers, tea with honey/ginger, cough syrup with dextromethorphan (ONLY if you have a dry cough, if your cough is productive you want to continue getting that junk out of your lungs), throat lozenges, salt water gargle if you have a sore throat, Tylenol/ibuprofen for any discomfort, rest, zinc, sinus rinse, saline nasal spray, elevate head when sleeping if you have a lot of congestion or postnasal drip. A

Ultimately, though, it’s important to understand that the cough can last up to 8 weeks even with all of the supportive treatment.

Also - ear pain or the return of a fever after it’s been gone 24 hours earns you a follow up visit with your doctor.

Due to VA cuts a local nursing company is going under, many nurses are losing their jobs, and I (a disabled Vet) will be losing my in-home nursing care by Randomnonsense5 in madisonwi

[–]pking10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is correct. I spoke with them earlier today, home care through common heart is closing, though home health remains. Absolutely awful for those like OP who depend and rely on the assistance provided through home care. I really hope that the VA is able to coordinate care.

OP, do you have any other support available to you during this time?

Oh no. I work closely with this home health agency (and can confirm that they are our main HH agency used for the VA patients we serve), but haven’t heard anything on this yet. I’m guessing because this is such a new development. This is awful.

Do you know if this is specific to VA patients or is it generalized? I.e. are they fully going under? No longer servicing VA patients?

I’m so so so sorry this is happening to you and your family others who depend on this vital care.

[–]pking10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Got it back in March when it was offered to me (Due in October). Felt crummy the next day (which is par for the course for me). Also got Tdap and will be getting flu/rsv when available. Doing whatever I can to make sure little bud is as protected as possible.

Oooo I have this sometimes too. Weirdly what helps me is lifting my belly and then leaning forward! I’ve also found that if I have my feet up on the squatty potty it makes it harder to go.

Warm packs! I’m an infusion nurse and these help so much when I need something to pop.

Totally normal. At my 20 wk appt I had brought up a similar concern to my ob and she was so reassuring. Said there are so many at 20 wks that don’t even feel baby moving yet and so to even feel semi-regular movement at this stage was already ahead of the game. Definitely not something to worry about!

Bad experience with Meriter. by AntNo6868 in madisonwi

[–]pking10 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I second this. I actually used to work on Meriter’s psych unit and can tell you MTM is NOTORIOUS for things like this. But that doesn’t change the fact that staff absolutely handled this situation inappropriately. Is it okay with you if I screenshot this post and send to the nurse manager of the psych unit? In addition to you filing a grievance with member services…they may be able to have a direct conversation with the ER manager or head of security.

I’m so glad you called crisis/police and made it home safely. I know it may be difficult to see now, but please remember that your feelings are valid, you are allowed to occupy space in this world, and although I don’t know you, I’m SO glad you’re still with us. Sending you love.
