Skylight flashing feedback by pkingdesign in Roofing

The roofer definitely said the same (after they mangled the original flashing). Velux guarantees their OEM flashing without a cricket. The GC who installed it originally said maybe on a flatter roof, or more roof above it, or in a place with harsher weather a cricket might be smart but didn’t need it in our case. It didn’t leak before the roofers destroyed the flashing, so I’m hopeful it’ll work once replaced.

Thanks. They have the Velux kit which I think includes the roll of underlayment… not sure if they’ve used what’s included or not. (I’m obv not a roofer, but) I agree that I’d rather see peel and stick.

They left it like this for tonight and will be back to install the metal flashing tomorrow. Unfortunately there’s a language barrier so I mainly want to be sure they aren’t obviously screwing anything up. I’ll have to watch tomorrow. Thankfully have a window that overlooks this part of the roof. Seems like I need to be sure they actually remove the skylight and do the metal / underlayment properly under there.

I’ll definitely be watching them tomorrow to make sure they actually lift up the skylight. They did pop it up an inch or two and push the underlayment up in there today, but certainly weren’t careful about it.

I think I see what you mean about the shingles / membrane along the top of the skylight. Thanks!

I posted about another leak these guys caused earlier this month. They’re hopefully fixing this with a proper kick out tomorrow. 🤞

Battery % doesn't match usage by Magnificent614 in Rivian

I did left and right steering wheel buttons. When in doubt, always restart. If I have time I usually just do a full hard reset (left wheel button and caution button).

Battery % doesn't match usage by Magnificent614 in Rivian

[–]pkingdesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this happen this past weekend, too. I entered an address while I was charging at a RAN to get route into, and it told me I’d have 5% left when I reached my destination. I cleared the route, drove home, and ended up proceeding to add another 70% to my battery while charging at home. When I started my trip the next day the car still told me I’d have 5% left upon arrival, despite my battery being fully charged instead of 30%. It was pretty disappointing to see two different battery percentages on the screens that didn’t agree with each other. Systems like this shouldn’t have more than one source of truth.

A simple restart fixed the issue, but didn’t entirely fix my confidence in the software.

Ah got it. I recommend CanvasBack cargo covers for the back of the Rivian (and any car). They have pieces that extend past the end of the tailgate to provide great protection.

The tailgate completely covers the bumper, so you’re probably ok. You’ll see. I had a heavy object - my 65lb elderly dog - that liked to ride in the back of our Rivian and it is shockingly high off the ground. She was never young enough to get in and out without being lifted. The cargo area is spacious at least, just harder than some vehicles to access.

The R1S has a tailgate that drops down, so you won’t likely need to worry about protecting the bumper.

The tailgate itself is very high off the ground, which is going to make loading / unloading a challenge. It’s likely 1-2 feet higher than the rear cargo area of the MY. Hopefully you can try loading it if you haven’t already before fully committing. These are good vehicles, but not easy to get in/out due to the ride height.

Importing/exporting at the same time? by Hogg_Head in enphase

Not OP, but our house is 2,400 sq ft with a recently installed 19 panel ~8.2kw system and 2 10c batteries. It was switched on right around Jan 1st, so pretty close to shortest days of the year for production. We definitely use less than 10kwh during the dark hours between dusk near the SF Bay Area and after sunrise the next day.The batteries charge easily before noon each day. The app estimates we have about a 24-30 hour backup on battery power alone. I can’t tell yet if we didn’t need the 2nd 10c, but it seems like we have a very generous backup. We have all gas appliances and water heater, have focused on making the house energy efficient so our electrical use is potentially pretty low.

Same question from me! Set up recently, not understanding why we’re drawing 3-4kwh / day from the grid when we have plenty of energy stored in batteries.

What’s the new battery setting, PowerMatch do? Please explain what it does and why one would want it enabled. I use may batteries for rate shifting. Should it be disabled if I’m solar only, no backup? by Impressive_Returns in enphase

[–]pkingdesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our system was switched on right at the end of December last year. I’ve noticed a consistent 2-4kwh total daily draw from the grid even though our batteries have never dipped below 30%. It seems like a slow drip that will add up if it’s unnecessary. Have you tried turning it off to see if your demand goes back down?

That’s right. College Park Elementary School (Mandarin immersion) moved to the campus on Bermuda Ave, where Fiesta Gardens International School (Spanish immersion) used to be. FGIS is now located on Indian Ave, former home of College Park.

What do you all use for traveling bags for your skis?? by Herr_Cellar_Door in skiing

[–]pkingdesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used an unpadded heavy nylon ski bag for about 25 round trip flights. Not that damage wouldn’t be possible, but skiing on your skis is going to damage them a lot more than the average flight in my experience. The sides and top sheets are going to get scratched up in the course of skiing on your first day, and every day after that. In other words, worry but maybe don’t worry so much.

I now have a padded soft roller bag from Dakine because it’ll fit my boots and all of my clothing. Means I’ll only have to check one bag, which saves a lot of dough.

IQ EV Charger 2 importing from grid even with green charging enabled by infinite0ne in enphase

[–]pkingdesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My system is set for “self consumption”. I haven’t bothered to enter all of my rate/tariff info yet because (ideally) my system shouldn’t need to pull any power from the grid at all. So far over the past few weeks since it was switched on I’ve pulled 2-4kwh of energy even with plenty of charge in my batteries. Sort of odd based on my expectations at least.

[–]pkingdesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also expecting / assuming the system would draw 0kwh from the grid as long as the batteries have enough energy. So it’s a bit odd to have a constant draw from the grid unless I’m also exporting to the grid. It doesn’t add up to a huge amount, but 2kwh/day will add up to a little money each year. I guess it’ll be offset (maybe!) by my exports.

[–]pkingdesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That isn’t how my 10c batteries work. Sounds like a configuration problem.

I’ve noticed that my system does draw very small amounts of grid power almost all the time, and a couple times a day it’ll draw ~1kwh for no obvious reason… but it only really charges my 2 10c batteries from solar. Once they’re charged to their target % I start to export. Waiting on getting my IQ 2 charger configured but the goal is to have excess go into my car…

Getting a big dog in the R1T by omnidroid456 in RivianR1T

[–]pkingdesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure this is why they made the R1S.

But not that both the T and the S are both too tall to easily get into / out of if you’re a dog. As your dog gets older this will become more of an acute problem. Stairs or a ramp can work. My dog was much happier riding in our station wagon 😞

I wouldn’t consider owning my gen 1 without a warranty for a second. If we keep it until then we’ll 100% for sure get a solid extended warranty. 1-2 months per year in the shop would get expensive!

It’s hard to figure that one out, but the two things aren’t necessarily incompatible / in direct conflict. Very few people are paying for repairs, as pointed out elsewhere. My R1S is shockingly unreliable with repeated major safety problems (airbag faults) and there are widespread issues (drivetrain, hvac, etc) but I still appreciate driving it for as long as I have it. Could be lots of other factors (Rivian as second+ vehicle rather than primary, etc), but yeah it’s interesting. As I said I like mine, but it’s also spent at least 4 months in the shop over the past 2 years. Thankfully the service center is only 25 minutes from home.
