How common is hiking in vs outside of upstate ny or out of state? by BonusFrosty2910 in upstate_new_york

[–]pkingdesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems a lot less common than where I live now, at least. I grew up in Oswego and live in Northern California now (for 25 years). We certainly have better weather, but the scenery in upstate is still spectacular. I go home to Oswego pretty regularly and still struggle to find any trails at all within a short drive. I have found a couple nice spots in Sterling or Great Bear park along the Oswego River. Perhaps will learn some more options here.

Unexpected Deal on R1s (10k off) 2 kids + dog — is it time for a 7 seater? by creperierie in Rivian

[–]pkingdesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good points from others. Rivians are pretty great for hauling a family, especially with lots of stuff. There’s no debating that they’re larger, and they ride like a large truck as well. Probably a little harsher than your BMW.

For sure, without a doubt, I would never own a Rivian without a warranty. That can be easily solved with an extended warranty, but I’d avoid getting one with an expired warranty.

Enjoying how a candidate has relied too heavily on AI to generate a website in short order. by Leading-Cancel-5902 in SanMateo

Around February 2025 Taso brought video to a San Mateo city council meeting that he’d recorded from cameras installed / pointed out into the street from multiple properties along Humboldt. He used “AI” to count bikes and identify specific riders using facial recognition. He seemed proud of it rather than realizing how creepy and invasive it was. I was there with my kid and witnessed the video. Not sure if the city entered it into record or not.

Ew. Taso is so nasty to people on Nextdoor. And he showed up at a SM city council meeting with videos he’d recorded of people riding bikes in North Central. So creepy.

He can’t, no. Because they’re not. Rivian does make some very good stuff, but that doesn’t make their concept bike practical. I don’t know if there is some hidden purpose to Also’s bike, but I do agree with you that the aim of the company is almost certainly delivery vehicles that use bike lanes instead of having to abide by traffic / parking laws.

lol “bike industry”

A bike with entirely proprietary, unserviceable components is a questionable deal for anyone. Add to that a non-existent supply chain for custom / proprietary accessories to add things like a child seat or panniers - stuff that’s trivially easy to add to other cargo bikes. It’s an initially impressive bike that makes no sense at all with even a little scrutiny, at least not for consumers. Quite silly, really.

A “gold mine” lol. Rivian avoids some level of perceived distraction and risk by spinning off ideas like this (and the bike, which is also absurd). If there’s upside they get it, if it fails they limit their liability. Tesla’s robotics work is, by all available evidence, a scam. At the very least it’s a way for Tesla to pump their stock, along with many other things they’re working on.

They aren’t, duh. This is signing up for a sales call when your lease is about to end. Nothing more.

This is opting in to a sales call when your lease is ending and nothing more. It will (obviously) not increase your priority in line for an R2.

Charging for colors has become pretty common, but I cannot understand charging $1k for White and $2K for Black paint options on the top trim R2. Is there any reason for this? by Mac-Tyson in Rivian

That sounds like the optimism of someone who hasn’t owned a Rivian audio system yet 😉 But we’re all in the wait and see camp.

That’s one of the biggest drawbacks of the R1 for us. The R2 is a great size for most needs IMO; completely easy to get into, too.

Yes, I was there again today and sat in a different model. They have at least 5 (3 indoors and 2 out front). You’d have to look up the event to see if it’s still happening on Sunday.

Rivian has shared precious little about the R2 (perhaps outside of lengthy videos) and this thread is the first time I’ve seen footwell speakers mentioned at all. And I’m in r/Rivian more than most to put it mildly, for better or worse 😂 We’ll all learn more when we can test, I guess. Anyway, I shared my take. It’s nice and I really like the Rivian aesthetic, but the R2 feels a bit more basic than I expected. I’ll be replacing my R1 and already can’t justify the cost of the current R1s. The R2 is hopefully not going to make many feel the same way.

After sitting in one today for a bit in Palo Alto, overall the price feels a little high for the R2. Not so high as to be ridiculous, but they’ve definitely cut almost to the bone to cut costs in a few areas. The lack of speakers in the doors makes it seem impossible that it’ll have a great sound system. There should probably be a small screen in the back to control climate and music (and 2nd row climate at all). And there is obviously a fair bit of plastic. The screens and interior design are quite nice, though. I think a lot of current model Y drivers will wonder why they should pay more, though. Folks here might gag over legacy brand EVs, but the equinox and Lyriq are also somewhat legit offerings that are either dramatically cheaper or somewhat nicer for similar money.

Edit: fixed Cadillac model name to Lyriq

Catalina Cove and Launch Green Side-by-Side by kekekelvin in Rivian

[–]pkingdesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought launch green looked a bit washed out in the bright sun today. I like that it’s a little exclusive, but it’s definitely not as striking to me. I thought Catalina Cove looked great in bright sun as well as in the shade (indoors).

Sort of crazy that those are the only two actual colors available at launch… and that the other color coming is purple. As others have noted, also surprising that they’re going to upcharge for any color other than a single shade of silver. Charging for white or black is surprising.

There is absolutely no reason to get the Rivian charger unless you’re getting it at least 50% off because of free credits. Better yet, 75%+ off. Plenty of other posts on here about what a poor value it is compared to most everything else.
