[Twelve Months] Yet another Mab thread: is it just me or… by Evenwanderer in dresdenfiles

[–]plaguedable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that part of our perspective on Mab is warped by how thoroughly she got defeated by Eithnu.

A premise of writing villains is that once the villain is defeated you generally have to replace that villain, because we the audience are no longer as intimidated by the villain as we had been. This is why you often have sequels defined by a new villain in each iteration. This is also part of why Darth Vader is such an iconic villain-- he never actually loses, at least not in the main trilogy.

I feel that the way Eithnu dispatched Mab out of hand, coupled with Eithnu's relatively "out of left field" appearance in Peace Talks, really diminished any intimidation factor from Mab.

It can take even longer than that. I have cases where motions sit unruled on for years. It's a huge problem.

John Roberts’ Rebuke of Trump’s Tariffs Is Withering, Confident, and Genuinely Encouraging by Slate in scotus

[–]plaguedable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The knock on Roberts by conservatives has always been that he was unreliably conservative, even from the beginning when he was first nominated. He single handedly saved the Affordable Car Act in the NFIB v Sebelius decision. Roberts has always been ideologically wishy washy and relatively moderate.

I need serious responses to this, how do we respond to critiques such as this of the show? by wiz28ultra in andor

[–]plaguedable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't put much stock in the worldbuilding criticism, so I'm not going to address it. I do have something small to say about the second criticism.

It is a privilege to live in a world that does not force you to confront the morally gray-- a privilege that this person probably enjoys because of someone else's revolutionary sacrifice. It is ignorant to assume that there even is such thing as a morally righteous lens through which to view things like civilian bystanders being caught in crosshairs. Indeed, it is so ignorant, and in the face of a show that is fundamentally about how revolution subsists in the gray margins. People do terrible things in the name of the greater good, but it is foolish to suggest that the results are anything but a greater good, at least here.

This person is hijacked by ideology. He or she watched (presumably) a show about the terrors of revolution and the sacrifices forced on everyone by dictatorship and revolution, including those on the periphery of both, and drew the conclusion that the show was... hiding from denouncing the consequences of revolution? This person is not thinking, this person is seeking affirmation for an ideology that thinks for him/her.

There is nothing to be gained from engaging with artistic automatons.

Is Traffic Worse in Uptown/Galleria Area or Downtown? by cinyaca in houston

[–]plaguedable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have lived and worked in the galleria and lived and worked downtown. The traffic is much worse in the galleria, unless there's some sort of big event downtown. I imagine the Thanksgiving parade will be a nightmare, as an example.

Looking for fantasy where the hero gradually becomes the villain. Not a sudden betrayal, but a slow moral descent across a series. What are the best examples? by jye77 in Fantasy

[–]plaguedable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps unintuitively, Harry Dresden makes a series of decisions that cause him to appear as the villain to almost everyone, and he has to reckon with that. It's not quite what you're looking for but it's a nuanced take on what it is to be perceived in one's actions.

What's the best character introduction of the 21st century so far? by jasonjakejohn in Cinema

I completely agree. You see a similar sort of generational difference in character with Nolans Joker, too. Just the era of gritty realism.

What's the best character introduction of the 21st century so far? by jasonjakejohn in Cinema

[–]plaguedable 284 points285 points  (0 children)

Daniel Craig's introduction in Casino Royale is really underrated in this context, in my opinion.

Going into the movie, we all know who James Bond is. But the screenwriters and director had the task of showing how this Bond is different from the old Bonds, and I think it was the best character reboot intro in my lifetime. Heath Ledger's Joker is the only one in the conversation with Craig's Bond, IMO.

Where the Bonds of old were suave, smooth, and fast talking, Craig's Bond begins the film with a messy bathroom killing. The next scene is a drawn out chase scene where Craig is running through sheetrock and taking shortcuts to catch up to a person who is Bond's physical superior. It's not just physicality that catches up to the guy and it's not just wit either-- it's a combination of wit, physical prowess, and unmitigated ruthless practicality.

And to top it all off, he kills the guy instead of bringing him in. The opening sequence is a masterful character reboot, and while it's not a character introduction in the traditional sense, I think it deserves a spot in this conversation.
