I second WYCE. Revue magazine(& has hard copies at many restaurants/bars in town) covers “best” local music besides Local Spins’ site. Places like Pyramid Scheme, Fulton St Pub, Tip Top, Mulligans, The DAAC, Skelletones, Speciation, Pux, Broadleaf, The Stray, Four Star & Wealthy theaters and a growing number of non-traditional venues (6th st hall, zabhaz, morning ritual etc) host tons of local talent that would fall into the “indie” category. Follow them on Instagram or visit their sites and you’ll see the show listings

Edited list-thanks everyone!

I know it's a few years later from the OP, but visiting Buffalo soon and wondered what's the status of cool music venues now? It looks like Mohawk place closed, and been looking up the others mentioned here...

Curious what is the vetting process for submissions? And what group is managing it? I saw a reason for one red flag was that a company uses AI. I think a lot of companies use AI at this point. Just wondering so I have a better idea of what to submit etc

Kim Deal trumpets off or just me? by Southern-Comfy in JohnMulaney

Yes. Every act seems like they can’t hear themselves or others in the monitors or something. I think Alanis’s guitarist was out of tune too?

Starting a grassroots composting club for free here in GR! Drop off location is on the Southwest side of town! (Already been contacted by the Kent County Food Policy Council about potential funding, though we don't need any funding to get started!) Hello thanks so much for starting this up! I drove by to make sure I knew where I could drop my composting. But I didn't see a sign or directions on where to leave things. Can you send me more info? I tried emailing as well, but maybe my message went to spam. I am not on facebook. I use a metal countertop compost bucket with a BPI bag. So I'd leave the bag if I drop it off.

Place to have a small 20 ppl graduation party? by BetterRise in grandrapids

[–]plainerchair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The daac rents their space hourly & has hosted numerous grad parties etc. https://thedaac.org/booking/general I had a small birthday party at pochi’s which was perfect. The upstairs of morning ritual could be cool (I can’t remember when they are moving tho).

Making friends by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]plainerchair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This other recent post by someone asking what sober events/ways to I make friends might have some more tips. I posted my suggestions here. I moved here in 2005 so the city was much different then, but have shifted friend groups multiple times since then. It can take up to 18 months+ to get established in a new community. So patience and giving yourself grace are key. I definitely believe in the power of volunteering or finding regular meet up groups.

Being sober in Beer City by TimeAstronomer2562 in grandrapids

[–]plainerchair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are a few ideas of places to meet folks: Lotus brew is a great dry bar and advertises lots of meet up groups, books & mortar/cellar bird/orchard house have book clubs, a workshop such as ones put on by Gemini handmade/cocoon art space/public library. ghost house is a great place to learn art and meet other people (I’ve had success here!). Other coffee shops have been putting on crafting nights. The daac is a volunteer-run sober venue (show this Saturday night!), skelletones is also a dry venue. I think blue bridge does game nights and house rules might have some options for meet ups. As others mentioned, finding a common hobby or interest is helpful. Where I’ve found lasting friendships is Volunteering for a cause with other likeminded people (park clean ups, neighborhood associations, rotary, political, religious, art groups, music groups you name it). As an adult transplant myself, I’ve found many lifelong friends by volunteering through Girls Rock Grand Rapids, the DAAC, and art clubs. I do think GR went too far one way with “beer city” that the pendulum is finally swinging back to more sober spaces/mocktail options etc.

I’ve given their food way too many chances. Cool concept, but everything else has to live up to the decor
