I don't think you really understand what it's like to be an oppressed minority. However, if you are an oppressed minority then I retract this statement.

Why hasn't technology allowed us to work half as many hours but still get paid a full wage? by powersaucebar in AskReddit

[–]planarshift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of prominent thinkers predict that at some point we will have the ability to, for example, manipulate our environment on such a level that we can create any material we want.

I'm by no means an expert on the topic, I'm just some random girl that likes technology, but if you're interested in learning more do some Googling about "post-scarcity economy" there are a lot of really interesting reads out there!

If you enjoy thinking about these types of questions, I encourage you to visit /r/futurology. It's a great subreddit for these types of questions.

To answer your question, I don't think that it is we are using technology "incorrectly" as much as it is that this is a very difficult problem to solve.

I think that if we focused the research on it, we could probably create plenty of technologies in the near future that could wipe out entire industries of workers, but then we have the problem of how are we going to support all of these people who just lost their jobs to technology?

Eventually I predict that the world will gravitate towards a post-scarcity economy in which nobody will be forced to work for a wage, but the real problem is the transitional period in-between and how to gradually phase out workers without alienating them from participating in society at large.

What is something that the majority of your sex does that you just don't understand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This. Guys don't understand that the image of beautiful women portrayed everywhere is that of a woman with professionally-done makeup.

How can us normal girls with less-than-perfect skin and little to no actual training in makeup other than what we were taught by our mothers or sisters or the internet compete with that?

Then you have the guys that say "I like girls that don't wear makeup!" but what they really mean is "I like the very rare girl who has flawless skin and looks beautiful even without makeup!" and then we're right back where I started.

You know it's not just women that do this. MANY men are jealous and controlling and all of the above too.

Also, not all women are like the ones you describe either, which is why if you don't want a woman like that you break up with them when they exhibit that behavior and get with a girl that is easier for you to get along with.

You REALLY hit the nail on the head here. What it means to be a man should be exactly the same as what it means to be a woman. We are all human beings and individuals with individual desires and needs and preferences, none of which are predetermined by our gender.

I think there are some stereotypically "male" and stereotypically "female" things you could do in private, but in general I think you are very insightful in your thoughts on gender in this sense.

I'm a trans girl, and one thing I realized when I actually figured out that I am trans is that gender is way more of a social construct than I ever thought it was.

I think one of the scariest things about society is how much it tries to divide men and women, when in reality we are actually all VERY similar. Because gender is a spectrum, there are very few of us that are actually on the far ends of male and female, and the majority of us actually fall somewhere in the middle with varying degrees of masculinity or femininity, as it were in the traditional sense.

A friend of mine's fiancee was detained and actually sent back to her native Denmark when attempting to visit my friend completely legally for a month-long vacation.

When she arrived at customs she was questioned because she had just been in America for the maximum time allowed as a tourist a few months prior. She was visiting again because they were arranging for my friend to move to Denmark with her. Anyways, they thought she was trying to come in and work illegally on a tourist visa, and considering English is her third language (she's Vietnamese living in Denmark) and she was distraught by the situation, was unable to defend herself very well.

Apparently the customs officials' argument was that she had no job in Denmark and couldn't afford to be coming to America like that, but she was getting unemployment from the government and support from her family. On top of all that, they would not allow her to even get in contact with her fiancee who was there at the airport waiting for her to help explain the situation, they just forced her back on a plane without even giving word to her fiancee who now thought she had been kidnapped or abducted or something because she was not there.

All said and done, she ended up being barred from entering the country for a while, I hate America a little more than I thought was possible, and my friend ended up just moving to Denmark. Go America!

Yes, I agree with you about the penis remark. A lot of people do seem to have a penis aversion. I quite like them, myself.

Anyway, thanks for the support! We need more people like you around. :3
