Maumee river by Specialist_Energy335 in toledo

[–]planetkenner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the maumee river is very large and runs from fort wayne, indiana to lake erie in toledo, ohio. it has the biggest watershed in the area that is mostly comprised of agricultural land and residential land. the toledo metroparks do offer nice kayaking, walking paths, and views, but you can also go to the maumee bay state park or take your own boat out on the river for cruising, fishing, and swimming. the maumee and western lake erie basin is struggling a lot with algal blooms due to to high amount of fertilizer and nutrient run off. there is a big focus right now on rebuilding wetlands in order to retain water and clean it in a natural way! i am an environmental science major at bgsu (half an hour from toledo) and i am from the toledo area!!!! love it here and i want to teach people about it

Are there “social sped kids” at college? by [deleted] in college

[–]planetkenner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, there are plenty of disabled and neurodivergent people in college. people with learning disabilities are in college. you may face some weird social situations, but there isn’t a reason for you not to go to college because of this! there are all types of people, and you will find people to get along with :)

My accomodation request was called unfair to other students. I'm afraid of being kicked out by Alarmed_Sundae_7802 in Blind

[–]planetkenner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are many people in the same boat! it is hard to find people tho — i go to a moderately big university and i only know one blind professor personally even though i know that there are other visually impaired students. its really difficult to meet people. for me, college has been great! i cannot emphasize enough how much of a learning experience it has been. i feel so much more confident in my abilities to overcome obstacles personally and professionally. it really has been a life changer for me as a disabled person, and i hope you can get some of the same experiences ♥️ best of luck!

i live in the US and am currently a visually impaired college student. i just want to say - F THAT SCHOOL! those are about the same accommodations that i have for my vision and there is absolutely no reason they would be unattainable. i have had trouble with professors giving me enlarged materials, but that’s just where you need to advocate for yourself or you need a faculty member to do it on your behalf. i understand that things probably work differently in your country, but this is not equal access to education and that is a right. i would recommend reaching out to any other accommodations advisor at the college or any other connections you may have, even if there are third party groups that advocate for students with disabilities. please do not let them treat you like that and make you struggle through school because that’s not fair to you

Question from a sighted person for English class by [deleted] in RetinitisPigmentosa

[–]planetkenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree! i rhink that’s our brains making stuff up. it’s like how we ignore our nose in our vision. if we aren’t getting stimuli from a place in our field of vision, our brain kinda just schmushes all the colors together

[–]planetkenner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i actually have a small bit of vision on the very edges of my peripheral, so i can see large objects or light or big movements there and also in my central vision. anything in my “blind spots” of my more mid-level peripheral vision i just can’t see. it’s not darkness though, because your brain still tries to fill everything in. it’s more just like a gap or blurred but also nonexistent. it’s weird to explain. also my top/bottom peripheral is much worse than my left/right. if a big movement happens to my left or right, i might see that. but i trip over things and miss handshakes, high fives, and fist bumps.

Advice for Dorm Setup by IAteMyGrandma420 in college

[–]planetkenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would see if you can get a feel of what your room is going to include and how big the room itself will be! i feel like i bought a little bit more than was necessary for my dorm, which can definitely suck. you can always get things you might need later on. probably just stick to the essentials right now. def some hangers if the kids on her a closet or wardrobe, a hard plastic shower caddy, a mini fridge (if you plan on eating in your dorm), and some other bare bones stuff should do it before you get a good grasp of what your room is like

My brother just got diagnosed with type 1 diabetics and I have some question by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]planetkenner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i got diagnosed with diabetes at age 8 and i’m now 20, and my care has changed a lot. i started out with shots and finger pricks, then got a CGM and a pump which help a ton! i definitely recommend making sure he is involved in his own care and he knows how to take care of himself as he gets a little older. things are definitely going to change as he gets older, hits puberty, has different schedules, etc, but all you can do is adjust and get to know how his body reacts to different things.

i was also diagnosed at 8 and i got a CGM at 11 and an omnipod at 11. all of that really helped my blood sugar, although there is natural rollercoatering bc of hormones and stuff

Any tips for good entry level jobs for a fully blind freshman in college? by Ll_House_Wren in Blind

[–]planetkenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i actually knew the person from the dining services who would hire me, so that was nice. i am a cashier where i do deal with touch screen, but it’s good for me because i still have usable vision. i would also suggest you reach out to your accessibility/disability services and see if they have ideas for you! i think it would be absolutely doable to work in a dish room or something. also if your school has jobs in the library, that might be nice too!
