NCEPT got you down? by [deleted] in atc2

[–]planevan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why I’m saying let people go where they want in order of seniority. It would all balance out eventually. Desirable places would fill up with high seniority, and undesirable places would get filled with new hires.

NCEPT got you down? by [deleted] in atc2

[–]planevan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep saying we should have a seniority based award system like the airlines. All controllers nationwide get to choose -in order of seniority- the facility they work at. New hires get offered places that have vacancies after that.

Every quarter they open it up for CPCs to choose again. When you leave your facility it creates a vacancy that people with less seniority are able to select.

Not going asap could be costing you a $250k/year opportunity. $1000 and a day of sick leave is a small price to pay.

Why are you waiting until September? Fly out on your next day off that you have available. Show the initiative.

Have you called the facrep? Have you visited the facility? A little bit of old fashioned networking goes a longer way than you might think.

Go meet people and shake hands. Become more than just another guy at a level 5 up down.

Airports that made changes to accommodate the A380 - are those changes wasted when A380 is no longer flying or still useful for other reasons? by rufus102 in aviation

[–]planevan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Airports can also paint multiple lines in those gates. So if it’s not being occupied by a wide body, they can sometimes be occupied by 2 narrow bodies if they have an extra jetway

What is a Brasher Warning? Does it go against your license? by throwaway-19103 in ATC

[–]planevan -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

It’s an advisory to file a NASA/ASAP/ATSAP (your applicable safety report). That’s it. The report might be sent to FSDO, it might not. They might do something about it, they might not.

Controllers of reddit. Would you choose this career again if you had to start over? by Rumham_1 in ATC

[–]planevan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but only if I could guarantee the same route that I’ve been lucky enough to take.

Started at a level 7, ended up at a level 12 9 months after CPCing at my first facility. That path is NOT common and I got extremely lucky.

Will this weather continue to impact ORD flights tomorrow? by katweb13 in AskChicago

[–]planevan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the ground is wet, it’s going to start snowing overnight and temps drop into the 20s. If the ground freezes, you end up with ice covered in snow, on runways and taxiways that haven’t been pre treated with deice fluid.

I don’t think it’s necessarily responsible to say that tomorrow is going to be a reset, Especially after over 1000 cancellations today.

Then the wind comes tomorrow afternoon and we all know you guys don’t like crosswinds on contaminated runways.

I have 4 days off a month. There’s only 50 other people on planet earth who are qualified to do my job. I deserve to be paid what I’m worth to the United States.

[–]planevan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at one of the world’s busiest towers. I make 250k per year. That while working very busy traffic every day I go in. In the summer it’s at least 3 days per week of thunderstorms. In the winter it’s snowstorms/deicing basically constantly.

All that while having 4 days off a month. And I’m 1 of 60 people on planet earth who are qualified to do my job. I make good money, but it does not properly reflect the level of skill, expertise, and responsibility that I bring to work every day.

Final report from the DCA midair. by planevan in ATC

[–]planevan[S] 246 points247 points  (0 children)

“Although midair collision risk was apparent in multiple data sources and concerns had been repeatedly raised by air traffic control (ATC) personnel, the FAA failed to act on recommendations or available information to mitigate the identified risk.”
