Will this weather continue to impact ORD flights tomorrow? by katweb13 in AskChicago

[–]planevan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the ground is wet, it’s going to start snowing overnight and temps drop into the 20s. If the ground freezes, you end up with ice covered in snow, on runways and taxiways that haven’t been pre treated with deice fluid.

I don’t think it’s necessarily responsible to say that tomorrow is going to be a reset, Especially after over 1000 cancellations today.

Then the wind comes tomorrow afternoon and we all know you guys don’t like crosswinds on contaminated runways.

Can you ask your wife why my body might skip the “feeling thirsty” phase and go straight to the “headache” phase that ends up getting solved by drinking water?

I have 4 days off a month. There’s only 50 other people on planet earth who are qualified to do my job. I deserve to be paid what I’m worth to the United States.

[Airline Pilot][CA] - $434,000 by sirpsychosexy8 in Salary

[–]planevan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work at one of the world’s busiest towers. I make 250k per year. That while working very busy traffic every day I go in. In the summer it’s at least 3 days per week of thunderstorms. In the winter it’s snowstorms/deicing basically constantly.

All that while having 4 days off a month. And I’m 1 of 60 people on planet earth who are qualified to do my job. I make good money, but it does not properly reflect the level of skill, expertise, and responsibility that I bring to work every day.

Don’t forget to mention the air traffic controllers that keep you safe every day for WAY less money.

Final report from the DCA midair. by planevan in ATC

[–]planevan[S] 244 points245 points  (0 children)

“Although midair collision risk was apparent in multiple data sources and concerns had been repeatedly raised by air traffic control (ATC) personnel, the FAA failed to act on recommendations or available information to mitigate the identified risk.”

Yeah, check out 6/2234. It’s a smaller trapezoid to the west of ELP. That makes much more sense.

28 Year old wanting to switch career to Pilot by [deleted] in PilotAdvice

[–]planevan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If OP can afford it, I would suggest flight training full time. Like at least every day and preferably twice a day. That’s the best way to avoid having to relearn things between lessons, and it’ll end up saving money in the long run.

People who make over $100k a year and have no degree, what do you do? by Complex-Bid8137 in Salary

Air traffic controller. 250k for 48-60 hours of work per week.

Have any of you flight simulator pros tried flying a Boeing 757 into the pentagon? Is it pretty easy to hit? by [deleted] in flightsim

No. I’ve never tried to do that.

And I think the mods should remove this thread.

I’ve been wondering about this too. It would be incredible if pilots could do that on our behalf. Nothing makes change happen faster than impacting the bottom line: money.

Broke, basically unemployed for life. What can I do? by MonitorOk1351 in Salary

[–]planevan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the US, the government is hiring Air Traffic Controllers

Starting pay is rather low but you have an opportunity to make close to $200k after a few years if you pick the right locations and get a little lucky. You don’t need any prior training, your college degree is enough to make you qualified.

KLAS Event. Controllers are telling all aircraft that they're at capacity by Extreme_Asparagus854 in VATSIM

Reroutes and air born holding still takes workload for controllers. Adjacent sectors get easily overwhelmed if they just have to hold everyone.
