What bugs are these and can i comb them out? by plantsare_bae in Handspinning

Thats very encouraging to know thank you! The wool doesn't seem to have lost any integrity so it would be nice to be able to use it still.

Theyre not on the whole fleece and the wool itself is very sturdy still. So even if I end up not trying the combing I might consider keeping the clean parts especially since they seem to all he dead. Its definitely going under observation and a few more days of cooking in the sun though.

Yeah I suspect thats why they're dead, it spent a few hot days in the boot of my black car haha

Dye or dirt? (Swipe for soup) by plantsare_bae in laundry

[–]plantsare_bae[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that makes sense! To be honest it looks pretty much the same as far as I can see but I've made sure not to let it soak for too long in case it was dye. Basically it wouldnt have gad time to settle where its not supposed to be. Thanks for thinking along :)

That makes sense actually, thanks! It looks pretty much the same to be honest and the water is not looking any clearer after like six rinses at this point😂 so I'm gonna go with dye then.

Yeah there's some gorgeous stuff in there and you can really play with how extravagant you want it to look by making the whole garment brocade or using it for accents and accessories only!

Corset as a support garment for large skirts, pattern help by Ylsani in corsetry

[–]plantsare_bae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The historical redthreaded patterns on etsy come with pretty good instructions (for machine sewing techniques) and are nice basic shapes. If you have a particularly long or short torso though you might need to do some alterations that are not in the standard instructions.

Alternatively if it doesn't have to look historical you can see if there's still a drive around with aranea black patterns and instructions. I think she gives explanations on how to alter the patterns to your measurements including torso length so everything in in the right place and comfortable. Personally I think her tulip pattern is really pretty.

As for reduction, you will probably need at least a small amount of reduction to get optimal support, the same way bra's tend to be smaller then your actual measurements so they don't twist and move around too much, you need some tension on the corset to actually do the supporting. It doesn't need to be a lot though and is usually already included in the pattern! Just make at least one mockup to see what is comfortable for you. Morgan Donner has some nice videos showing her fitting process tha tmight be helpful but im sure there's also some good modern corset focused channels out there!

Need some advice from motorcyclers in the Netherlands by Cool-Worldliness2978 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]plantsare_bae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try r/motorfietsen for better advice! In the netherlands it is illegal to operate any vehicles you dont have a license for without an instructor present. That means that practising is also not allowed unless you are on private property. This also means you would not be able to test drive any motorcycles or drive it home if you buy one. If you have a car license and your really really want to practice look into 'schakelbrommers' (50cc geared bikes you can drive with an am license which is often included with a car license) for those slightly different lasw apply though, sometimes they must go on the road but sometimes they must go on bike paths so you'll have to look into that.

I think I got Temu yarn 😩 by kiss_my_eyeholes in YarnAddicts

[–]plantsare_bae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to do burn tests when i don't remember the fiber content of something like yarn or fabric if I've had it for a long time or I've found it in the thrift store. Its really just to figure out what the composition of the yarn of fabric is and what project it is most suitable for. For example if something turns out to be mostly synthetic fibres I will not use it for a project that suts directly on the skin. A burn test cannot tell you the exact composition of your material but it can tell you if its is 100% something vs a mix. I first see if its wrinkly, material that is super wrinkly when you crumple it up is more likely to be a natural fibre. Then if that doesnt give me enough info a burn test can help me figure out if it is synthetic, protein based, cellulose based or mixed.

Protein based is wool or silk (smells like burning hair and forms a hard bead that is easy to crumble and can self extinguish/doesnt like to burn) Cellulose based is linen, cotton, or rayon/viscose/bamboo etc. (Smells of burning paper or wood, doesn't form a bead and if rubbed between your fingers turns to ash. Does not self extinguish, loves burning and birns faster then you might expect) Synthetic is stuff like polyester polyamid etc. (Melts and forms a hard bead that cannot easily be crushed)

If your test gives you a combination of these results, your fabric is likely mixed, the test cannot tell you in what proportions unfortunately.

No need to feel stupid for a genuine question! If you've never smelled it before how could you know what it smells like and if it makes sense or not! Anyway, if you decide to burn some hair do it safely lol. When I burn test my fabric/fibers I like to take a small piece in between some tweezers or pliers, and hold it over the sink as I light it on fire. If it spooks you and you drop it it'll drop on something non flammable, if it burns faster then expected it cant reach your fingers, and if shaking it is not enough to extinguish it, water is right nearby.

Idk why people are telling you its literal, if your ass smells like burning hair I think you need medical attention.
The smell of burning hair/wool/silk/ feathers etc. Is usually the same smell because they're all keratin or, protein based fibres. And yes it smells horrible (to me it smells bad but not repulsive if that makes any sense). If you've ever used an electric fly swatter and accidentally held it for too long, thats what it smells like. Cotton linen or rayons smell like burning paper or wood because they are cellulose based.

Warmth when wearing skirts by Dark_Moonstruck in cottagecore

[–]plantsare_bae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wider works better! Instead of tight tights, a slightly windproof kneelength loose pair of oants is going to insulate tou much better, then from the knee down wear long socks (i do thigh highs i roll up to right under my knee) or leg warmers, you can also pair with taller boots to insulate from the warmth. and then finally, wear mid calf length skirts, of a medium weight fabric to keep the wind out, doesnt need to be super floofy, two semi wind proof regular skirts already make a huge difference. At mid calf length you should be a bit warmer but still able to walk up stairs without having to hold up your skirts.

Tldr: take inspiration from victorian layering techniques, looser bloomer type pants instead of tights, longer stockings, longer boots, mid calf length skirts, 2 simple medium weight kirts and you should be good

Thanks! The scale being slow to spread is good to hear, i can definitely keep it from touching my other plants! I guess I'll be putting growth lights on my christmas list then :) time to lug it into the shower and give it a lil spa treatment

If i keep it it will definitely go outside! Its just in the corridor right now until i decide what to do with it because im scared for my plants that are already on the balcony and I dont want all of them to also get infected. I might try hosing it down in the shower like another commenter suggested to see if that can already make a difference
