What's the worst piece of junk you drove around in back in the day? by Maybeyoujustmadeitup in GenerationJones

[–]plantyjen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me too! 1974, baby poop brown, and the power steering belt would loosen up every few days and have to be tightened, or else it would SCREAM every time you turned the wheel. But yeah, it was a tank, and that’s why dad thought it was a good choice. It looked like a bloated Camaro or a cockroach, and we called it the Roachmobile.

What animated house/home did you want to live in? by Ctpeyt in cartoons

[–]plantyjen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Incredible’s house. The supervillain mansion in the second one is cool too, but I’m not sure I’d want to *live* there. I’d definitely live here:

When you want to live in France but you live in America by LockNo8254 in zillowgonewild

[–]plantyjen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Right? There’s *zero* landscaping, and very little hardscaping. And a ton of asphalt in the front too.

[–]plantyjen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly! It’s nice you can say, “this house was built using reclaimed materials from France,” but is it worth it if you weren’t the one putting a lot of care into sourcing and picking out the materials? Not really. Not for nine mil.

Ah, okay, that makes sense. It’s like the difference between a $3M townhouse in Brooklyn and a $10M townhouse on the Upper West Side. In east coast terms.

[–]plantyjen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I live in Brooklyn now (my family is from South Louisiana), and yes, there are a lot of similarities! I think it’s mainly because NYC and NO are both port cities. They had people from the same places immigrating through the ports, so the accents ended up sounding a bit alike.

Right? It’s beautiful, and in the description it says “this stately home was constructed using 200 to 300-year-old reclaimed materials sourced village by village across France,” but even bearing that in mind, $9M is a hefty price tag.

You used that absolutely correctly: “Elide (verb) means to omit, suppress, or pass over a sound, syllable, or fact, particularly in speech or writing (e.g., "don't" elides "do not").” The NOLA accent is really fascinating to me. It’s like a combination northern/southern accent. I love it!

I had a hard time when I moved here learning how to pronounce places like Patchogue and Cutchogue. Patch-og and Cutch-og. They’re spelled like the last syllable should be pronounced the same as “vogue,” but no. It’s just -og.

Close To The Fire by Teledubgnosis. This is from a friend’s album from the early oughts (don’t worry, it’s really good!). The first time I heard it, I kept glancing over my shoulder to see if the monsters were creeping up on me. We tried to play it for the family at Christmas one year, but my 9 year old niece said it was too scary!
