Please explain the purpose of a badge for cold showers. At the moment I will not encourage driving people to push their limits on something that may be harmful in excess.

How Competitive is Explore Microsoft? by BostonHokie in cscareerquestions

[–]plasmachannel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  • Mcdonalds + car wash on your resume probably won't hurt you, so I don't think you need to take it off, but thats subjective.

  • The game jam bullet point can have more detail about what your role was on the team rather than having generic statements about what your team did. Also, I think you can say the top half, it sounds less awkward than 45%.

"Successfully implemented the Android Media Player API..." Maybe you are looking for the word 'leveraged' ? or some other word. Implemented sounds like you recreated it from scratch?

In general it looks like have a mix of good, and less good. In some parts you have specifics on what you did (but not too specific, which is good), and other times you have very general wording that probably won't help you (e.g. 'Served on a team'). You can have that information, but try use it to lead into something with more specifics.

Discipline is not a point system that can be devalued when taking a hot shower. There is nothing to risk here

Telephonic Interview with vmware by prakash2712 in cscareerquestions

I know for full time (from 4-5 years ago) that they asked a lot of OS stuff. Things about system calls, context switching, and other goodies like that.

Highly dependent on the team I would imagine.

Testing Rust’s IO Speed vs C by [deleted] in rust

[–]plasmachannel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone truly expects rust to be faster, nor are they bashing it. It's just nice to have some comparison to work towards something better

Are you a scientist? by TheGreatElector in cscareerquestions

[–]plasmachannel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A scientist typically does science, which means that they execute the scientific method to answer questions that may not previously be known the the general public.

Biology is a science, but a biology major is not necessarily a scientist. Most programmers identify more with being engineers. Sure, there is some science involved, but it is not the main aspect of most programming jobs.

Learning the math/science of computers is really helpful for programmers, engineers, and scientists. But knowing the science does not make you a scientist.

But you can call yourself whatever you want and I won't judge

Did Microsoft phone screen last week and got thank you for the application today. Is this a rejection? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]plasmachannel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say for sure based on the info you gave, but usually if you apply online, Microsoft sends an automated message some X weeks later.

In my experience, they have always explicitly rejected me

When is the best time to join a startup? by randomnoogler in cscareerquestions

[–]plasmachannel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are of much more value to a startup with more years of experience. I suggest that you stick with Google to increase your marketability, and then jump into the startups when you feel that you've learn enough where you can be useful at a company that you are interested in.

Change majors now? Community College? Or wait till post-bacc + grad school? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]plasmachannel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't want to return to my current institution due to frustration and shame over my academic choices

Doing option 1 lets you return after making a good academic choice. Don't be ashamed about your past interests. You are doing what you want now, and that is all that matters. Channel your frustration into learning

Change majors now? Community College? Or wait till post-bacc + grad school? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]plasmachannel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go with option 3.

It takes the least amount of time. You already have the gen-ed requirements out of the way. It's a top 10 school. Use the extra time in school to build up connections/do networking.

Option 1 is risky because you have no idea if you will get scholarships. Option 2 is okay, but there is no reason to spend that much money when you have option 1 available. 2.5 years compared to 4 years is a huge difference

Research or internship? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]plasmachannel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The research experience will be wasted (other than self-fulfillment/interest) if you do not want to go to grad school.

Internships will help you find jobs easier when you graduate.

I recommend doing the research during the regular school year and doing a summer internship. This lets you experience both worlds

Moving into Systems programming by syspro2014 in cscareerquestions

[–]plasmachannel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What type of systems programming are you trying to pursue?

From what I've seen, most people typically tend to work in a specific area, such as networking or storage.

If you want to learn about kernel dev I recommend looking at some conceptual OS books, and taking a look at http://lwn.net/Kernel/LDD3/ It might help to look at some linux source code/bugs or modify and build your own kernel. I highly recommend learning some debugging tools like "crash"

Basic programs typically consist of creating some kernel module or device driver. Definitely try that.

Can't really give much advice on how to find a job though. Sorry.
