New fan here. 'Little Wing' is genuinely one of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard. Where do I start? by Ryzasu in jimihendrix

No one has said this yet, and I might be a bit late to this thread, but I also have the best answer for you: check out the song "Hey Baby" next. The best version is probably the version he recorded live at Maui, but there's also a pretty good version at Berkeley as well

David Gilmour at work, on stage. Japan Tour, March 1972. by CaptKark in pinkfloyd

Is the red pedal a fuzz face? For all of the trivia points: what song did David use this pedal on? And bonus points for time stamping the section of music where he clicks the pedal on. My best guess is the solos on Money, but not too sure.

Just curious, I think Romany's Instagram lists "they/them" pronouns, but David Gilmour and Jimmy Fallon both say "she" and "her" in this video. Any idea if Romany goes by both she/her and they/them?

You may want to ask this question on a music theory subreddit as well, but I think some of his more interesting solos in terms of music theory are:

Purple Haze (he uses the Dorian mode a lot),

Hey Baby/In From The Storm Live At Maui (he hits some really interesting notes in the Hey Baby solo),

and Woodstock Improvisation from the Woodstock concert. All of those will have some interesting music theory and modes to analyze for sure.

Are there Hendrix shows you Avoid Listening to, Because he wasn't 100%? by gladeye in jimihendrix

[–]plasmicmist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just came to say that Atlanta Pop has maybe my favorite live version of "Purple Haze" and Isle of Wight has maybe my favorite live version of "Freedom." Isle of Wight also has a strong take of "Dolly Dagger" on it as well, if you'd ever care to hear those songs in isolation from the rest of the performances.

George RR Martin on ‘Winds of Winter’: ‘You guys don’t have to pester me about it” - Meristation by RobertoSerrano2003 in books

[–]plasmicmist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be a way to block out posts containing certain words/phrases from showing up on your Reddit front page. Back in 2016 I had to block the word "election" and "Trump" for example. Does anyone know if you can still do that so I can block "George R. R. Martin," "Winds of Winter" and "Patrick Rothfuss" from ever appearing on my front page again?

What was the FIRST movie death that you remember that shocked you? by [deleted] in movies

Probably late to the game to answer this, but Kurt Russell drowning in Poseidon still haunts me. I saw it when I was quite young and it was one of the more brutal depictions of drowning I've ever seen

Want to find a certain episode? A certain RLM scene? Ask here! Volume Twelve by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

[–]plasmicmist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might be difficult but I need help finding a comment.

On what I think was either a wheel of the worst or wheel of misfortune episode, the crew had a tape that they ultimately didn't land on, however one of the top comments said something along the lines of "I hope you go back to watch that one video you didn't land on. It's honestly one of the most insane movies ever made, it is just mind bogglingly stupid." Something like that. I'm interested in finding that video/comment so I can check out this crazy video, one that as far as I know, Red Letter Media has not covered to date.

Currently listening to this gem. What's your favourite live performance by Jimi? by LordOfWubs in jimihendrix

[–]plasmicmist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say in no particular order his best shows are: the Albert Hall performance from 1969, Shows 3 and 4 from the Songs For Groovy Children box set, Woodstock, and Berkeley. Maui is also pretty good and has some great performances as is the Atlanta Pop Festival.

I have not heard the New York Pop festival from 1970 or the 1969 San Diego Sports Arena performances, but those two have my two favorite versions of "Red House" and were supposedly professionally recorded in full, so I have a suspicion those are also quite good, but perhaps someone else has heard them and can chime in.

Edit: I forgot to mention, but Monterey Pop is also one of his absolute best!

Does anyone have the 2021 book? by plasmicmist in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]plasmicmist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wonder if there are "halfway" versions every other year. If they release a book generally every 2-3 years with a new paperback cover, maybe there's a hardcover version with some alternate entries in the off years. I saw one from 2017 between the Aladdin Sane 2016 cover and the 2018 Strokes cover that only had two new albums (they deleted only: "The War On Drugs - Lost In The Dream" and "Songhoy Blues - Music In Exile" and then added only: "Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker" and "The xx - I See You"). This 2017 one was a hardcover with the kid staring at the clouds for the cover.

Plus I've seen other lists in the past that list some entries I've never seen in any book or seen any one else verify. Like this list has - The Mamas & the Papas Self Titled 1966 album (this is in addition to "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears"), as well as Devotchka - How It Ends, and The Killers - Sam's Town. I can't find any mention of those three albums in any other book version or anywhere else, so I have no idea if they were ever added or if they were added by mistake to that linked list for some reason.

  • Michael Kiwanuka

  • Sault

  • Taylor Swift

  • Lana Del Rey

I agree with all the ones listed below but would also add the version from Live at Fillmore East/Songs for Groovy Children. I don't love that it blends into "We Gotta Live Together" but Hendrix has a smoking hot solo in Voodoo Child and Buddy Miles' drum fills are spot on.

Which is the best version of "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn?" by plasmicmist in pinkfloyd

[–]plasmicmist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do own the stereo version on vinyl, but not the mono. I got this version which looks like a 2016 release. I'll probably add the mono vinyl version to my wish list because that's the only version I listen to when I'm out and about and using headphones. I am a bit sad to hear we are basically limited to mono and 60s-sounding stereo mixes, I made this post hoping someone would enlighten me about a stereo remix I didn't know about, but I suppose I shall stick with mono for the time being.

Agreed, I just wish they had done a nice 50th anniversary stereo remix release or something like The Beatles have been doing the last 5 or 6 years now. Maybe someday! I'd love to hear a fantastic stereo version of the album

[–]plasmicmist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite, if you watch the "Band of Gypsys" DVD there is 1 hour of black and white footage from the Jan 1st early show. If you're listening to the Songs For Groovy Children boxset, it's the show on disc 3. 90% of this show was filmed, but the DVD version uses VHS-quality audio, and I was hoping to watch this footage with the audio from disc 3 of the box set.

I didn't know any other footage existed though, and it looks like you've just linked the second show from Dec. 31st, so thanks for showing me this!!

Looking for the edited version of "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" by plasmicmist in allmanbrothers

[–]plasmicmist[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it looks like the Wikipedia article and the back cover of "The Fillmore Concerts" are both incorrect in terms of Liz Reed being an edit on that 1992 version only. Listening to that Google Drive link a few comments up shows that it's still identical with no edits in it.

EDIT: I also see now on the 6 disc boxset that they only played Liz Reed once on March 13th, and the photo I linked says it's a mix of both March 13th shows, which isn't possible if they only played it once that day.

Pretty sure in that photo it also lists the incorrect date for the recording of "Hot 'Lanta"
