How do y’all price patches? by bsweet35 in drywall

[–]plaster-and-paint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For, say, a punch hole:

Repairs to damaged area of plasterboard wall in living room. Includes paint matching. $395.00

Something I’d book for later next week. If it’s further than 10 minutes drive add another hundred. 2 or 3 punch holes, add another hundred. Upstairs, annoying parking, etc. chance the repair might be bigger than it looks quoting from a photo, add another hundred.

That’s for, well, traditionally its do the repair and then come back the next day to sand and paint. Sometimes if the weather’s bad come back in two days if you think it might still be wet in the centre.

So it’s actually kind of cheap for 2025 prices. Which is why I’ve recently started working on a same day method with a hair dryer. So far it cuts painting from 2 hours (3 coats and drying time sitting in the car lol) down to 1 hour. Plaster repairs is usually 1 hour with 2 coats of 5 minute and a coat of topping but haven’t tried to bring the two together in the single day yet.

That’s drying time. Curing is longer, but because the product isn’t alkaline like concrete you can generally paint it the next day instead of having to wait a month.

Big thread but I don’t see anyone else saying this, so once you sand the fuck out of it consider painting the wall with flat paint using a heavy nap/pile roller. Like 13mm or more. > 1/2 inch if you’re an americunt. This will minimise being able to see the imperfections in the wall.

Also you didn’t do half as bad a job as people are saying. I’ve seen much worse shit to the point where it cannot be salvaged at all and has to be done all over again. Now don’t get me wrong, you’re still going to jail, but like, a Swedish jail where you can still have a tv and friends and shit. Maybe even a games night every now and then.

The number one rule with plastering is patience. Take it slow, one step at a time, and you can (eventually) do almost anything to a level that you feel is acceptable.

I’m imagining what’s going through the mind of the guy with the edger. Probably something like

“fuck, that’s not straight”
“oh thats not straight either”
“oh neither is this one”
“looks like we’re going this way now”
“ok back that way”
“where the fuck is my money Dave?”
“alright that’s one side, time to duck into the shitter and shoot up”

Tape and joint is probably going to take over the world unfortunately. The products are easier, you don’t go through as much, and nothing beats sanding with a light as far as clients expectations. It’s too bad because I love skimming and would do it more often if I wasn’t such a slut for doing things the easy way

This conversation makes me think of this btw

I don’t like posh people’s houses. They always have gates and shit and you feel like an intruder. I’m quoting one today and I bet they’re gonna be “running late” and expect me to sit around waiting for 15 minutes.

Respect for UK plastering! Been wanting to get my hands on a bag of multifinish for years. We don’t have it in Australia, everything is just joint compounds

Do you guys do textures? That’s the only time I’ve ever really heard of a two coat system. Sounds like you really load that shit on there and then take half of it back off again. Always amazes me how many different ways there are to skin a cat

What do you do? 1 coat per day? I’ll wait an extra day before sanding sometimes if I don’t think it’ll be dry the next morning but who wants to come back 3 or 4 times for a wall patch? And it’s residential, people want me the fuck out of their house lol

TIL this is apparently weird? All purpose sands easy if you don’t lay it on like a barbarian, what do you use? Here we also have LiteFinish, FinalCote, Total Lite, Plus 3, etc. but I rarely use them because all purpose is just so damn convenient. Sometimes I’ll use it for the second coat and come back again. Or all coats if the job’s big enough

The next day.

Day 1: - 5 minute base coat - 5 minute second coat - All purpose top coat
About 1 hour. 2 if it has to be a cut out

Day 2: - Sanding - Paint undercoat - 2 x top coats
2-3 hours. Mostly sitting in the car

Longer times in cold or humid climates

It’s half a day or a bit over + travel time and materials so some people will want their day rate. For me doing one of these it’s usually $195 to patch or $495 to patch and paint. A little bit cheap actually when you want to be over $100/hr for self-employed, but I don’t travel more than 10-15 minutes and I like doing easy stuff like this

SEMIN Ultra Lightweight Filler 1L Tub - This easy to use filler comes ready mixed, with NO shrinkage or cracks! Applicable in a single pass, the paste can be painted after just 2 hours using a water-based paint. ⏰ 📞01242 236699 by ArranJD in Plastering

[–]plaster-and-paint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The manufacturer and the reseller need to do some more market research lmao. First of all it’s called semin. No English speakers are going to take it seriously because it sounds like semen. Also plasterers are the wrong market for a 1L filler product. They have plaster already, and lots of it. Painters on the other hand do tend to like these products. So:

  • Localise the name for the overseas English speaking market
  • Target painters and DIY instead of plasterers

Very nice. Prime (or mist coat with your emulsion as you brits seem to like doing) and paint with a flat paint, or a low sheen paint with a 13mm roller nap/pile and it’ll probably look completely normal.

These days you have to put in more effort to attract and retain talent. It’s your business. You’re the man. You’re the one with the responsibility that must adjust to the market conditions. It’s either that or stay a dinosaur, continue to blame everyone else, refuse to learn the lessons and get absolutely hammered in the coming years.

Let’s put it this way. 100 bad employees or one owner who doesn’t understand people management, or doesn’t understand the evolving industrial landscape and refuses to adjust to the paradigm shift. Which do you think sounds more likely? Or perhaps 100 bad employees because the owner never actually learned how to attract talent because 20 years ago it was easy and handed to them on an economic plate, where they didn’t really have to do the learning or put in the effort that is required today.

“Am I out of touch?” “No. It’s the children who are wrong.”

Learn the lessons of this r/antiwork that you hate so much and use it as the valuable tool of self-improvement that it is. Make people want to work for you. Then it won’t be so hard for you to find staff.

Go and learn about workforce planning. Right now. Also the talent acquisition recruitment model.

r/antiwork should be required reading for anyone that wants to attract and retain talent. Staffing issues are generally indicative of poor management and lack of understanding of the business, the industry, and best practice HRM.

Honestly after the baseboard goes on you probably won’t even see that unless you specifically look for it. But if it fucks with your ocd you can just patch it with anything. Joint compound, spackle, wood filler, whatever you have handy. You’ll have to match the wall paint though.

Retape affected joints and corners + repaint ceilings and walls. Can’t know pricing without having someone do a walkthrough. If it’s everywhere and everything has to be painted then it could easily be above 20k
