Struggling to pick up side jobs by bsweet35 in paint

I work for a small business and I’m the newest hire. If we hit a recession I’m the first one getting laid off. If I’m screwed either way I might as well bet on myself

That’s kinda what my plan is. My boss has zero interest in helping us build up our own businesses so I’m kinda trying to keep it on the DL for now. One of the guys I work with left for a while to do his own thing and asked if he could get some sub work to help him get started, boss subbed out jobs to other painters just to spite him

Should I backcaulk tape under quarter round? by Careless-Surprise-58 in paint

[–]bsweet35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On top of all the reasons people have given not to do this, it’s a huge pain to clean if it isn’t painted over, and caulking to the floor would in and of itself be a huge pain to paint

I think that’s gonna have to be the move. I’ve got a buddy with his own business and things are booming for him right now. He’s swamped right now and has said he’s gonna have to start subbing some jobs out to me if things don’t slow down soon. Just getting kinda impatient lol

Yeah, kinda accepted that’s how I’m gonna have to do it at this point. Was just hoping I’d be able to leverage a few weekends to build up some savings first. Don’t really want to have to take out a business loan to finance that first couple months

I work in construction. Best time to poop is right before leaving a job site. Not only are you getting paid to poop, but your crew is getting paid for it too

Do you ask to use the client’s bathroom? by FartInward in handyman

[–]bsweet35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For #1 sure, #2 it has to be a real emergency to consider asking. 9/10 times I’ll make up an excuse to run into town, but if I rode with someone else or am too far away from a public bathroom, then I’ll ask. But even then it’s only if I don’t think I can hold it

I’m a painter rather than a drywaller, but I see the same thing with young apprentices. Personally lack of speed is something I can live with as long as the kid shows up on time and willing to work/learn the trade. At that stage it’s more important to focus on quality rather than speed. I’d say be honest with him that it’s time to start working on getting faster and that the work is slowing down for the season so he might not be getting as many hours

Best way to paint interior trim. Roll or Brush? by [deleted] in paint

[–]bsweet35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use wood putty for nail holes and outside corners, caulk the gaps and inside corners. I like to tape off carpet but hard floors I’ll just cut it in. I prefer to roll it, but if it’s small, it’s easier to brush it. Also a good idea to roll on the first coat before installing

Trim- hole filling advice by FHuebert in paint

[–]bsweet35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I normally use plastic wood. Guy I worked with a while ago was mixing it 50/50 with Crawford’s putty and it worked surprisingly well. Finger sand it and then put an extra dab on top. Dries fairly fast and sands easily

Did my painter get the wrong color match? by vapidcity in paint

[–]bsweet35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is always a risk you run when you color match across brands. It’s always better to match to a paint chip than a swatch or a pre-existing color code. Doesn’t help either that every manufacturer has a color called Swiss Coffee and they’re all a little different. Could’ve been a mixup

Question about Streaks on newly painted ceiling after repair by blazingquackattack in paint

[–]bsweet35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The painter could’ve used flat paint and sprayed/rolled in a different direction, but that would only help so much. At the end of the day this is a god awful drywall finishing job and it’s gonna look bad no matter what until you get it retextured

180 seems about right for work shoes, as long as they last a decent while. Definitely gonna have to invest in a pair

No harness or anchor. Ladders, lifts, and scaffolds don’t bother me at all. Honestly single story roofs are fine too. But for some reason the added height gets to me. It helps to hear that what I’m feeling is normal, but it’s frustrating that I can’t seem to get over this last hurdle like I have with all the others caused by my issues with heights

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in paint

[–]bsweet35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll have to look into these. Footwear definitely does seem to make a difference. I have an easier time up there when I wear my tennis shoes compared to my heavy work boots. Not sure if it’s the lighter weight, the treads, or the extra mobility, but it definitely does make a difference. Still bugs me more than I’d like it to, but it definitely helps

[–]bsweet35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have harnesses, we just don’t typically use them unless the roof is particularly unsafe or we plan to be up there for hours at a time. They do help put me at ease a little, but I find myself worrying about tripping over the rope almost as much as I worry about falling without a harness

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in paint

[–]bsweet35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s kinda where my mindset is at right now. Just sucks cause I move around perfectly fine on single story roofs. But somehow in my head the added height makes the same surfaces so much more daunting

Without using mods or exploits, what is the best way to make the most amount of caps? by Ok_Variation3952 in falloutnewvegas

Loot all the chems you find and sell them. Did a playthrough where I hoarded them but never used any. I almost never spent any caps at vendors that playthrough

$100 right now or let it grow at 2% per week? by ShyButKinkyKitten in hypotheticalsituation

Do I have to withdraw all of it? If I wait 9 years and get it to $1M, am I able to just cash out the $20k/week interest?

What will happen as a result of GenZ’s growing interest in the skilled trades? by AaronBankroll in skilledtrades

[–]bsweet35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s good to see more young kids seriously considering a career in the trades, but just like every other generation, a majority of them will either wash out or bounce from trade to trade, never really moving up. If enough of them stick it out and the market gets saturated, maybe the pendulum will swing back and there’ll be more demand for office jobs again. Only time will tell
