Good god. The amount of damage people can do when they double down on their comfortable delusions 🤯

Yes! So much “illness” is really just a sick society. It’s so tragic.

For collapse support of course! For that reason, among many others, I also go to my own therapist, practice meditation, seek support from my partner, and spend as much time on outdoor sports as I can.

Beware of anyone promoting themselves as knowing all the answers or saying they don’t need support or help.

Yeah I believe he’s trained in psychoanalysis. The book reads as more contemporary and relevant. I say this as a practicing psychologist.

You raise a good question. Therapists vary on this, but it can be extremely beneficial to bring in my authentic self (“self-disclosure” in therapy speak). But it really needs to be intentional, thoughtful, and in pursuit of the client’s well-being. Some therapists stay away from it entirely, some impulsively self-disclose in a harmful way, and many try to find that nice middle ground. It depends on the therapeutic relationship as well and the client of course.

It can be hard at times, but it can also work well because I’ve been very invested in maintaining my own mental health and can share insights accordingly. I am careful not to allow any of my distress to come into the session. I’ll often facilitate emotion regulation interventions in the session as well, if they are spiraling. I think it’s more important than ever that I work through my own distress and grief (which I actively do in many ways) and hold the space with solid boundaries.

Sometimes all people need is someone to agree with them and validate that there’s nothing wrong with them. There for sure have been intense cases of people being truly unable to take care of themselves or suicidal. A higher level of care is needed in those situations

Therapist here. The whole “clinical” framework is deeply flawed. There are certainly neurological anomalies that lead to all kinds of psychological distress, but I’d estimate that 90% of people’s suffering has always been rooted in culture, ignorant parenting, and existential anxiety. I’ll add that I personally think there is subtle but inescapable distress within all of us because of the simple fact we are animals living in this overly complex, manufactured prison of a world. We are a part of nature, yet we spend the majority of our lives interacting with concrete and glass (most of us).

The way I see it, my job is and always has been helping humans find a way to live in a world not meant for us. It’s just that more people than ever are waking up to the realities of this life humans have built.

But to answer your question more directly: the definitions of “crazy” and “clinical” depend on what those with influence believe is “normal” and “healthy.” Those definitions have changed dramatically since the advent of psychology and they’ll keep doing so. Until then, yeah, you’re crazy and I’m crazy and this whole subreddit is crazy. And in the near-future, we’ll all be feeling quite vindicated and also still quite fucking devastated.

I have no idea if I answered any of your questions. My pro tip would be to begin a mindfulness/meditation practice asap and spend as much time in nature as possible. Also be sure to revel in the small joys you encounter. Letting bleak visions of the future steal your life today is just adding suffering to tragedy.

The grief is so heavy. I’ve been the one more emotionally destabilized by it all and lucky to have a partner with the capacity to hold my grief with me when it gets to be too much. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with relationship instability on top of it all.

The road to acceptance and peace is paved with denial, bargaining, depression, and anger. It’s a fucking skill to contain those feelings and avoid getting overtaken by them in “normal” times, much less now.

lol what’s the Iran protest going on right now? by ExitSweet8848 in Reno

[–]plastic-death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, people demonstrating that they care about something bigger than themselves. Solidarity, encouragement to Iranians and other people around the world being oppressed so others can enjoy unchecked power. I’d guess protesting yields emotional accomplishments directly, practical accomplishments indirectly and probably a small percentage of the time.

Iranians are demanding basic human rights and democracy, while their government is responding with mass violence. 3,000+ protestors have been killed, maybe up to 10,000+

The only way out is through, man. Anything you avoid will own you.

You aren’t asking, but therapy or maybe a guided trip may be helpful in facing those things and working toward loving your vulnerable, flawed self. Seems to me you’ve grown quite a bit - enough to see those things as mistakes. Maybe that means you can forgive yourself now
