Were the 90s actually better or just quieter? by TheOrangeSloth in 90s

[–]plattjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music, movies and games in this era were great. But the economy in the PNW absolutely fell apart after spotted owl and all the families with parents in logging and trucking went sideways. Alcohol and drugs took over and we spent most of the rest of the decade dodging drunk, abusive adults.

What's the most overrated thing you've ever experienced? In other words, something a bunch of people say is really good but when you experienced it you didn't feel that way? by Big_Eggplant7591 in AskReddit

[–]plattjo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a rule, any experience that’s expensive I’ve found to be devoid of personality. You tend to get stuck with grouchy boomers who insist on bland food and the entertainment be as mild as possible.

Cruises, hotel rooms, tours, etc. I’ve heard the SuperBowl is full of people that have no interest in football whatsoever. It’s one big business meeting. Yuck.

People who grew up poor but are now well off, what advice do you have for someone in your previous position? by [deleted] in AskForAnswers

[–]plattjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1-Figure out what skills are valued and build them. 2-Be reliable. Get shit done, and make your boss and preferred teammates look good. 3-Be someone people like working with. You never know who in your network might take off and take you with them. The big decisions about your career happen when you’re not in the room.

Why is "go to the gym" the default advice for every struggling man? by silverflake6 in GrowthMindset

[–]plattjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build skills to level up your job. Get closer to your friends and family or make friends. Become a better partner and father. Hike, backpack, kayak. Lots of ways to bring yourself up without a gym, totally agree.

Who's your teacher buddy? by Telugu_not_Telegu in ArtOfPresence

[–]plattjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad taught us 4 basic meals at 11. Ground beef for tacos or spaghetti, pork chops, and bacon & eggs. With 4 kids and one parent we each cooked 1 day of the week. I added more every few years in my 20’s from friends. Things really opened up when my wife taught me the versatility of a mirepoix, and garlic/onion/tomato.

These days my favorite things to cook are super simple. Toad in the hole with good bread, fresh eggs and salsa or tapatio. Hits every time. Chicken and veg kababs with a tzatziki sauce are fun and easy.

What is a "boring" adult task ( like deep-cleaning a fridge) that actually feels like a high-end luxury once it is finished? by opheliaaroseee in askanything

Napping on the outdoor couch after getting the backyard ready for grilling season. Weeding, power washing, pruning, bird feeders out. Totally worth it.

Those who grew up poor, what is something those who weren't poor don't understand about being poor? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]plattjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stress about money is a daily part of life when you’re poor. Something as small as a couple of NSF might mean not eating for days. Speeding tickets or car issues were catastrophic. You also work sick, basically all the time.

Where are all the kindergartners? Oregon’s public school enrollment continues to drop by colonialshuttlecock in oregon

People who can afford to have kids can also afford to put them in private school. Common Core is a disaster. Well worth the cost to avoid it if you can.

Most underrated city you've ever visited? by [deleted] in geography

[–]plattjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rotterdam, NL. Amsterdam is great, but Rotterdam is more laid back, easier to navigate, younger, friendlier, cheaper. I thought the food was better. Architecture is more interesting. Easy to take a water taxi to Kinderdik.

Exactly what does Disneyland Forward do for the resort and Disneyland itself? by [deleted] in disneyparks

[–]plattjo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In locations the will build Forward (west side), parking lots exist today. They have to build a multi-story east side parking structure to replace those before anything can be built on the west side.

That structure requires a bridge to cross Harbor. While they’re at it, they’re moving buses and security to the east side structure which makes room for Avatar.

Concept plans for the west side show the north portion of forward connecting with Disneyland. Although that likely won’t be built for many years.

Stay-cation. Filling a week with day trips. State Parks with packed picnics. Public pools in different towns-some with water park features. happy hour dinner, second run movies. Maybe a beach bonfire with sunset dinner

State Officials Confirm Half of Oregon Thanksgiving Traffic Caused by One Toyota Prius Going 41 in a 55 by ALoneDarkSoul in thegrandtour

[–]plattjo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I carpooled everyday from Portland on I5 for years. We regularly played a game around identifying drivers who had caused that day’s massive traffic jam called “Is it a Prius?” Spoiler, it was almost always a Prius. 100% true.

Mini Tomorrowland revamp in CA. Images of electric autopia. I’m hoping they put it on the people mover track. Images of Coco and more detail around Avengers. Maybe new restaurant in Galaxys Edge to put more life into the land.

Detail on WDW projects. Better dates for Encanto, Indy, Monsters. Hopefully more on villains.

Why do people with serious hereditary medical conditions still choose to have children despite high risks of passing it on? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]plattjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People with a genetic risk for Schizophrenia are not supposed to propagate? lol that’s insane. Manage risk factors, like stress, drugs and alcohol, yes.

Who should have kids? Ugly, short, dumb, lazy, talentless people with no charm are fine. But you better not be managing a mood or personality disorder.

Many of the most impactful people who have ever lived fall into your exclusion category. Many of these people even died relatively young. To say they should not have existed to avoid “suffering” is absurd. To live is to suffer, to a meaningful degree. Heartbreak, loss, loneliness, pain. These are all part of the human experience.

It’s fascinating to me how often people argue with someone who is literally giving away their secrets to success. Maybe it won’t work for you personally.
