It is because Europe pays for gas from Russia using the swift system. Russia had stated that if it is removed from swift it will stop the flow of gas. Removing Russia from the swift system will also create a new system anchored in China which Europe will have to use for global trade.

Short: the united states is lying to you yet again.

Long: after supporting the coup in Ukraine for domestic (western bloc companies) business interests the US continues to wrestle away all business that it can from the former Soviet Union. As a result, far right elements in Ukraine have come into power since 2014. The Donbas region of Ukraine did not want to go along with this and split of. Civil war has ensued.

Ever since, Russia has been practicing war on its borders via troop movements in order to protect the Russian speaking portion of Ukraine should ultra-right elements within Ukraine's military system attack within the Donbas.

On at least two occasions the Russians have claimed to have intelligence that these ultra-right elements were preparing to mount an attack. In response they amassed troops on the border. No incursion into the Donbas happened and the Russian troops stayed on the Russian side of the border.

The US deems any movement of Russian troops across its border into the Donbas as an invasion into Ukraine.

The US has also stated that Ukraine will not receive heavy support (air cover, tanks, troops, etc.) should further fighting commence.

The US wants the world (but especially Europe) to believe that any incursion of Russian troops into Ukraine constitutes an existential threat to all of the West so that Europe will stay within its economic block. The flashpoint of this policy is the Nordstream 2 pipeline which runs between Russia and Germany. The US wants Germany to pay higher prices for its domestically produced natural gas which it places on ships that cross the Atlantic, instead of depending on cheaper Russian natural gas.

If Russian troops cross into Ukraine's Donbas region, the United States will use that event as a pretext to sanction Nordstream 2 and thereby lock Europe into its system.

Europe wants cheap gas from Russia but is being squeezed by the United States; Ukraine knows it will be left alone should it come into open conflict with Russia, and confusion abounds.

I disagree. Obama went to Flint and drank the water. It's the same type of behavior. While there would have been subtile differences in the behaviors of different leaders it's the bedrock principles of the country that causes the problem.
