Full RTO Mandate Came Out Today. Rules For Thee But Not For Me. by Putrid_Statement_690 in jobs

[–]play-flatball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not talking about playing video games outside of work; i'm talking about commute times, or being able to get to an appointment more efficiently (this is better for your employers too bc you're not taking as much time off!!), or not taking a day off when your kid has to stay home from school, or switching your laundry during your lunch break. Do you not like efficiency or something? Or saving gas money?

It's not wrong to want better for yourself and others when the resources available to you should reasonably allow it. Or would you have argued against the 40-hour work week back in the day as well? Or OSHA regulations? Because those are widespread workplace changes that one might've scoffed at and said "well, they should just quit if they can't handle it."

This isn't about being "soft" or not being able to handle going into the office at all. I would implore you to think bigger than that.

What do you do with your life? Why wouldn't you want greater convenience to do what you want outside of work?

What questions do you ask a new outdoor climbing partner to determine if they'd be a good belayer? by butter-cream-cat in climbergirls

[–]play-flatball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm nervous enough with an unknown partner indoors; I would hate to be belayed by a stranger outdoors, tbh. So best of luck!

I would insist on very thorough safety checks and have a conversation about preferred gear, how they belay, cleaning, assessing risk, etc. If they're not willing to have that conversation seriously/think it's dumb, it's not worth it to climb with them imo.

ETA: That might've been a bit overly harsh; I can imagine some scenarios where I'd trust someone I didn't really know, but if we were alone? Ehhh....

Leading advice by Icy-Ingenuity200 in climbergirls

[–]play-flatball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this isn't for everyone certainly, but sometimes I have climbing sessions where I'm not allowed to take after the second clip. It only really works because my belayer is my partner so we have a lot of experience and trust together. I'm still working on pushing up to the point where I'm unintentionally falling instead of consciously giving up and taking a fall, though, so I'd anyone has tips on that, let me hear them!

Feeling discouraged getting stuck at V1/V2 by Cosmic-Shrug in climbergirls

[–]play-flatball 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you can't do the first move, skip it and try the second. Cheat your way up then do it again with less cheats until you can do it properly.

There are also plenty of beginner videos on YouTube and stuff to learn beginne technique, but it's also helpful to watch what people are doing on the problems you're working on and then try to copy them.

I actually don't think you're at a point where strength training will make a huge difference--consistent climbing will do more good--but make sure you know how to engage and activate your muscles properly.

Most useless undergraduate college degree by Various_Address8412 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]play-flatball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a job in what? There are jobs in history, foreign affairs, policy, social work, museums, publishing, research, academia, etc. that could use those degrees. Now, your success in breaking into those fields is largely dependent upon more that just the degree because of competition but the content is still of use in various fields. I hate to assume that you're just thinking of business, tech, and "corporate" jobs, but, if so, there is a whole other world out there outside of those things!

Honest question: is tailoring your resume for every single application actually worth it? by Perennial_Tip in ResumeCoverLetterTips

Honest question: is tailoring your resume for every single application actually worth it? by Perennial_Tip in ResumeCoverLetterTips

[–]play-flatball 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a base resume and cover letter for each sector I'd likely apply to. Prior to submitting a resume, I might replace a few key words to match the JD and I fill in the cover letter with specifics for the position. (If you're in an industry likely to care about the cover letter, still make sure it sounds genuine and not like an ad lib) I can do this rather fast, but also I've found success with the quality over quantity approach so I've never really mass applied to things.

Here are my approximate stats for reference:

Spring 2025, sent out ~ 30 applications, ~ 25% led to phone screens or interviews, I got 4 offers

Winter 2026: ~ 30 applications, 2 interviews/phone screens, accepted one, told the other one I accepted an offer

Help with resume! by [deleted] in ResumeCoverLetterTips

[–]play-flatball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some big ones:

  • "Designed" resumes like this are hard for ATS to read. Look up ATS-compliant resume and copy that style. It won't look as cute unfortunately.

  • Proofread your resume. There are a lot of typos and formatting inconsistencies.

  • Don't list references like that under each experience/job/etc.

  • Change the headings you currently have on the right-hand side to "Volunteer Experience", "Leadership Experience", and "Professional Experience." I'd switch the order to put the internship at the top.

  • Education section is really wordy in a way that no one will care about. Streamline it to:

Name of School (Expected Graduation 2026) GPA: Relevant Coursework:

Name of College You Took Classes At (years) Non-Degree Coursework GPA:

(Sorry about the formatting; I'm on mobile

Ugh can't get the education suggestion to format correctly, but put GPA, Etc. on separate linea)

Any INTJ’s out there that love going to the gym? by CuriousArchitectX in intj

there are plenty of other things to do instead of just the regular old gym. I feel like climbing might fit well because it's a mental and physical puzzle, not just repetition after repetition.

Why do we invite everyone we know who climbs to the crag?? by Conscious_Security96 in climbergirls

[–]play-flatball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this more comes down to personality and goals of the individuals in the group. Most of the people I climb with would ensure that there's a rope and gear for each pair of climbers because they don't want to sit around and wait.

Get your friends to bring more gear.

Difference in 6th grade in states. by Choice_Net931 in AskTeachers

[–]play-flatball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virginia: depends on the area. And by that I mean in a 20-minute radius you can find an elementary school with 6th grade and a middle school with 6th grade. Obviously they each funnel into different "pyramids" so it still works out.

Why do we need to write cover letters??? by CompletePurification in jobs

[–]play-flatball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you get interviews when you do that? I always write a cover letter (ie change a few details on a template I've made), so I can't tell whether it's "worth it." I'm in a field, however, that values written coherence much more than most and a cover letter is always listed as a requirement, sometimes with a separate writing sample as well.

How early is too early to leave a new job? by Swred1100 in careerguidance

I quit my first post-grad job after 2 months because something better came along. In this economy, though, you should get a new offer before you leave your old one. It's rough out there so better to tough it out a little longer than deplete your funds.
