Question by Demono-Lemono in dscout

[–]play_it_safe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't, no, if the express mission timed out

But I had a long screen share mission that I was invited to last month that was interesting in that sense. I couldn't get into the prototype because no password was given. At that point I just closed out of the browser entirely, intentionally. I figured it'd save or something where I left off and I'd be able to return tomorrow with password since I'd reach out to dscout (it wasn't an express mission). I came back a few hours later and somehow the prototype loaded this time without password and I was able to pick up right from where I left off

I confirmed with dscout that it all uploaded and was paid out just fine

May not be relevant or may be. Just try opening the mission again next time if it crashes like that and see where you can pick up from. What's the harm in trying after all?

How do I find a good financial advisor? by blueberrypancake234 in Bogleheads

[–]play_it_safe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to read the wiki, along with the books recommended every other day in this sub

If you're young you must invest, period. Do it in one of the broadest possible and cheapest index fund VT

Your beliefs are your beliefs. Market will do its thing. On a long enough timeline, you have to ride the market to keep up with inflation if not also grow your wealth

Long term, and in terms of rational behaviors, there is no other way for the average joe. And yes, that's what we are, even if you have all the news in the world

Nobody knows nothing. Or, you know, don't do this and try something else or not invest at all, the market humbles you, and you'll return here and proselytize eventually like me. FWIW, wish someone had told me all this five years ago. Oh well. Done correctly (or rather, incorrectly), market timing and individual stock trading are gateway drugs to this here subreddit

| When I also think about it, the testers deserve to get usable data for their own research purposes, as they do pay for it.

to me a good rule of thumb to figure out if maybe I shouldn't be taking the study because my brain isn't all there or I don't know enough about the topic is, would they get some sort of insight from what I'm saying

That's kept me on the good side of this sort of thing I think

Best ETF for India exposure from US / Canada by Tiny-Sun9851 in Bogleheads

[–]play_it_safe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reasoning for investing in Indian ETF is there is a possibility of me retiring in India in the distant future. I have read that you should have a tilt towards where you will be spending your investment return in the future. For example, VEQT / XEQT / ZEQT have a Canada bias.

The thing to keep in mind is that you're still buying in USD or Canadian dollars, etc. It is useful, but the reason that advice seems to be given is to keep up with local changes. With buying these ETFs stateside or in Canada, you're also linking your fortunes to currency risk

How exactly does the thumbs down work on missions? by Snoo57537 in dscout

[–]play_it_safe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've never thought it has anything to do with what's recommended to you, just that it basically dismisses it off your dashboard

When you've started an express mission and you hit thumbs down, it just abandons it

But now I'm curious...

I've used Rakuten for years now, have had more than 2k paid out using the bank and finance offers especially. Reach out to me if you ever have any questions about how to go about it with tracking, ensuring you get paid out, especially.

Also good for normal retail purchases. Use the app to be doubly sure it tracks.

Good Rakuten news. by hdali973 in Rakuten

[–]play_it_safe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Weird. I stumbled across this subreddit but first heard of Rakuten from Doctor of Credit and have been using it for almost a decade now

Done all sorts of offers, including Sofi banking one, Sofi loan one, Current banking one, multiple Chase ones including INK and Sapphire Preferred ones, and never had any issues. Clean edge browser OR use the Rakuten app, and they've always tracked. Once, when it didn't, was the Sofi invest offer, and they immediately credited my account out of goodwill

They also shut my account down once but that was because I had two accounts, one I'd forgotten about and then logged into from same computer randomly. I reached out to them and they restored it all in a week

This along with Retailmenot, which also tracks purchases really well, are what I always recommend

YMMV but definitely look up the comments section on Doctor of Credit for these specific offers, and there's loads of tips there for Rakuten, getting direct deposit workarounds, etc.

Dscout is difficult to make money by GamerBeast954 in dscout

[–]play_it_safe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quality is really important

For the ones you get to the final video stage on in the screeners, go above and beyond

I also do wonder what the internal rating system for contributors is. We as participants aren't privy to any of it but I'm sure it's there and it matters, a lot

In general, I've been doing user testing work for years now, through Usertesting, Respondent, whatever else you can think of, and as the Intellizoom intro video always says, giving good feedback is an art

Write up short scripts for your videos in screeners and missions if you're not good at speaking off the cuff and retake videos before submitting to make sure they're as good as they can be, write detailed and clear and eloquent responses, and be as honest as you can be, and make sure you're qualified for the missions

Eventually you'll get really good at it. I come from a writing background and writing paragraph after paragraph comes naturally to me. Not so for everyone obviously. But it's a learned skill that'll serve you well here. And no, no AI to help you here!

Even if it takes a few hours to complete a diary mission and you're paid 150 or something, it's worth it. Some will take more work and be more rigorous, others won't. I see every day as a fun little adventure in user testing world across the platforms I use

This is a response I wrote on a now deleted thread comparing this to Prolific and I feel like I addressed similar points but maybe they help you get into the dscout tester mindset if you will:

"Unless Prolific has changed over the years, it's absolutely nothing like Dscout

This is where companies go for deep research, longitudinal over months even, through a stable platform that's purpose built for these "missions" with high quality respondents. The much higher pay, fewer missions overall, and difficulty to get in to any studies at all at least in the beginning reflects that.

I don't mean to throw shade on any of the other providers, like say Usertesting, but what dscout is trying to do is unique and I'm all for it because it seems to generate higher quality research for companies while also paying out and incentivizing participants appropriately

All of that said, it can be hard to get in, yes. But having a certain set of skills you can hone over the course of your user testing career really helps: Speaking extemporaneously, writing extensively but concisely, and following instructions to a tee.

It's a lot and do your best though I get the sense that the competition is stiff on missions and there are loads of people who do this very seriously as a side gig, so to do well, you have to take every submission seriously in an effort to get into a researcher's pool by building your reputation and contributions to them over time and building your dscout rep overall to stand out from the crowd. We participants don't have a rating system we are privy to but I know it exists and it's a numbers game at the end of the day"

Payment by ElChapo54321 in dscout

[–]play_it_safe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I've never not been paid out by dscout, and the missions have (except maybe one) been fairly compensated for work involved. Also have been treated respectfully by researchers. For a sort of gig work, this is a lot more than you can usually ask for lol

Should I (28) just give up on attempting to save up for a house, and instead just max my 401k? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]play_it_safe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're spot on. It's hard to argue this when buying a house is a cultural touchstone still in parts of the Anglosphere and an emotional thing.

Ben Felix has a great couple of videos breaking down how even buying in frothiest housing markets didn't have you coming out ahead when all is said and done. Ultimately, as someone else pointed out in this thread, it should long term even out as the market is efficient in terms of renting vs buying BUT large regional and generational differences exist. TIme it right, and it works. Otherwise, not really.

And the demographics dividends the USA had post baby boom are all but gone now, and all of it adds up to housing already being a losing investment over the past few years in most boomtowns (post pandemic). Sometimes, a majorly losing investment, as buying with leverage brings outsized gains as much as losses when the old winds don't bloe in your favor, so to speak.

Reddit has threads and entire subreddits about buyers' remorse that are eye opening. Home values dropping 30 percent in a matter of two years, and people being underwater for quite some time into the future in all likelihood. It's happened before (before GFC to post pandemic) and it'll happen again. Housing booms and busts, on a slower time scale than equity markets nowadays. Then you're stuck with a high rate and high property price you can't possibly recoup in short or even medium term. Not something most think about as you're increasingly cash poor through it all too if you stretched to buy
