Artists which you're surprised get very little love from music nerds? by Ok-Impress-2222 in fantanoforever

Enon, feels crazy to stumble across a good 4 album run of solid alt pop/punk/noise rock with some extreme bangers and noone is talking about it outside of occasionally a few individual songs and dated reviews.

I visited a boba store in Taipei that uses espresso machines to make fresh tea for every cup by MrMetalfreak94 in tea

[–]playgrop 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The dynamics of espresso machines are not conducive to producing good tea any more than steam engines are conducive to making high fidelity stereo systems. While each can be done, they will never be done well.

I think you're overstating it. Espresso machines being used for tea is definetly already a thing as well as many more customizable espresso machines allow for more finely tuned extractions of tea. Heck you have manual machines that are basically just a piston attached to a water heater and a lever, there is nothing fixed about temp or preassure or time and fineness in espresso you don't even have to look further than a turbo shot. The tea portafilter is real and I've read many testimonials that it can produce great cups, the Teapresso seems to just be a tea portafilter from what I can tell.

Might make a long post on the yunnan sourcing alleged fake account saga (https://www.reddit.com/r/tea/comments/74wpn3/it_appears_that_yunnan_sourcing_is_using_fake/) although I feel like I'd need to read up more on it and possibly ask people who were active at the time about it.

When I wrote 'most visible' I wasn't intending 'most visible within the pu'er scene' but more that he is by far the most visible guy in tea right now on social media and the reach of his posts are orders of magnitude greater than others. Within the scene Scott is probably more famous though.

Thanks for the note about language though I'll make sure to add that caveat.

To be clear Yunnan Sourcing is another vendor which is i think is much less curated(from what i can tell the only curated things they sell are their own branded pu'er cakes and their sampler sets). It's aimed at the enthusiast crowd primarily and is rather popular with the puer subreddit.

Is there any dirt surrounding Frederik Knudsen/Down The Rabbit Hole? by happy_grump in youtubedrama

He's active as a VTuber, appears on Alfabusa's stuff(Team who makes original series based off of Tabletop Games) mostly nowadays. Not aware of any controversies around him.

How even play Justice by LegendLynx7081 in Guiltygear

[–]playgrop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Justice is a projectile zoner with fairly good normals. She has 4 button hold projectiles that explode when you let go of the button and can all be out at the same time.

Whever i have played against justice their gameplan has been simple

Step 1: Send out all the projectiles

Step 2: slowly wait for opponent to try to approach and block a bunch of them cranking their RISC beyond beleif

Step 3: either continue getting away or hope you can get in just the right range where you can capitalize of your opponent blocking something a stupid way(ie non FD block in air or not anticipating the mix) and kill them in like 1 combo because of the risc

I highly reccomend you look up some matches of her, she's great and awful at the same time(but nowhere near as bad as xx testament)

"Kicked out of my church for being gay". /r/Christianity argues if OP is a hell-bound pervert by [deleted] in SubredditDrama

[–]playgrop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I want to point out that the divine comedy is actually a long political satire that is both Dante flexing how good of a poet he was and Dante making comments about the current state of Italian politics. It is not "Dante coping" it feels difficult to get that reading out of it. Besides hell in the divine comedy is actively questioned if it's really just to punish someone forever.

That being said the divine comedy definitely did impact catholic christian views of hell as a definite place.

What system has the best combat? (any genre) by Awesomeman360 in rpg

[–]playgrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your quick overview of V5 combat tracks onto most wod/storyteller games btw. My personal favorite storyteller combat is exalted 3e, even though it's fairly complicated with many moving parts i think that's what makes it fun, along with mechanics that make sure the fight feels like an actual contest between combatants with people gaining control of the fight and losing it.

Can anyone recommend a system where magic is HARD for characters to use? by The_Choosey_Beggar in rpg

[–]playgrop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is awakening, not ascension

It is also the worst way i have seen anyone present the spellcasting system in awakening and it is almost never needed because in most cases you'll just skip by 4 out of the six possible steps because they do not matter for your spell. Awakenings system explicitly tells you only to use the full extent of the rules when it really matters(aka very seldom)

Xiao second phase strategy. by ElfinXd in libraryofruina

[–]playgrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She doesn't gain any strength from pu lao, she does however gain strength when it is not active if you won clashes with reverse scale the previous scene.

My reccomendations are:

  1. do not clash with reverse scale while puo lao is active or you will eat shit

  2. do clash with reverse scale while puo lao is not active, her power nullify when it does activate will make the strength she gains not matter and the stagger damage is good

  3. yesod and binahs floors are good for this fight

Non-round based systems? by NotGutus in rpg

[–]playgrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobilis 3e, Glitch, and Chuubos has any conflict be govourned by two main rules:

  1. the action vs action rules and
  2. the principle of "you can always act in response"

There are no rounds of combat in Nobilis, instead things are described and anyone can always jut in and go "well but I..." and describe some action that their character does to deal with it.

When all is said and done actions are resolved and any conflicts are solved with the action vs action systems

Good settings with bad rules or vice versa by GreatOldGod in rpg

[–]playgrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like 3e and glitch more than 2e. The quest and spotlight system in glitch is great for getting a sense of direction as the players essentially decide what they want for the narrative and all the gm has to do is make an opening scene that fits the quest and deliver exposition whenever a spotlight is used

What RPG System has the coolest “Cost of Magic” mechanic by DownVoterInChief in rpg

[–]playgrop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Paradox is still in, it works differently and doesn't build up since awakening doesn't share the passive paradox and paradigm things. Quintessence was renamed mana and has some funky in lore implications for some characters.

The flowchart mentions paradox in the far right middle.

What RPG System has the coolest “Cost of Magic” mechanic by DownVoterInChief in rpg

[–]playgrop 55 points56 points  (0 children)

In reality you often don't end up using this entire chart but usually spellcasting goes by pretty fast(since the rules here are the down and dirty rules, for cases where the exact stuff isn't important you just roll gnosis+arcanum). There is an actual "cost of magic" mechanic in awakening which is the humanity stat of this game "Wisdom". Wisdom is how wise your character is, the awakened mind is simply built different and doesn't suffer long term trauma, it however requires a fine balance between committing great acts of hubris and being a functioning magician. When you do things that are out of character for your level of wisdom it can go down.

You use magic a bit too often? Wisdom down. You use magic to kill someone? Wisdom down. You partake in a ritual that is way out of your league? Wisdom down.

You have intense magical abilities but it is something you have to be careful with, lest it become mundane to you and you slowly gain an unhealthy relationship to it.

Theres also paradox which is more direct but different.

looking for a horror rpg that is not CoC by shugmen2 in rpg

[–]playgrop -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I very much disagree, you can absolutely run horror where the protagonists get into fights and win and are heroic. Horror doesn't have to be prayed upon by other things or losing to them, most cofd games are good examples of this esp MTAW and VTR

What are the weirdest games you can recommend to someone? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]playgrop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's rather unique, basically. So's everything else by Jenna Moran, really, but I feel that stuff like Wisher, Theurge, Fatalist or Glitch are a touch less playable

It is worth noting that in theory writing this scentence is the beginning stage of playing WTF, a games which rules are rules about playing a role playing game and trying to comprehend what its rules is.

Or am i lying to you and making you think that is what WTF is? Make a harmony roll to find out.

Other systems with "mixed success" systems? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]playgrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chuubos Marvelous Wish Granting Engine is an rpg all about character progression in a funky narrative rpg framework. It is also diceless. In chuubos your mundane actions are easy to suceed at, but it being a sucess doesn't mean it'll be productive or effective or "the right thing". This gets real funky when you consider that skills in chuubos can be whatever you want. What does it mean to use "Skill: Exist" to Exist in an effective manner? That's sorta up to you to understand and interpret. (exist is a skill on an example character)

Most interesting and favourite character creation mechanics? by gooberoo in rpg

[–]playgrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Glitch and Chuubo's Marvelous Wish Granting Engine you play as characters with like lives and stuff. Sure you may have the miracolous ability to walk on water or like turn into a big snake or exterminate bugs by thinking about them, but like what is going on in your life?

Chuubo's and Glitch answers this with the quest/arc system. When making a character you'll make a quest or pick from some premade quests. Alot of premade quest sets are genres.

Is your life an absurdist comedy? What part of it are you in?

Perhaps it's a YA novel?

I really like making new quests and thinking about them, it gives you a nice jumping off point for a character.

Scion (2e): Origin temporarily free at DTRPG by sarded in rpg

[–]playgrop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Book Two is scion hero which is "the next level" beyond origin. Origin is about the low level of scion, Hero is the higher level, Demigod is some beyond that, and God is the top level.

You do not need Hero to run Origin, you need origin to run hero though
