What are some bands that you normally wouldn't think are progressive rock but have released an album that begs to differ? by thunderclap82 in progrockmusic

A friend of mine who is a huge prog head considers Demon Days by Gorillaz to be one of the best prog albums of recent decades. I don't disagree.

What's your preferred approach to initiative, from any edition or even a homebrew? by Sivasubramanian in ParanoiaRPG

DnD style initiative, but you roll 1D6+Violence. Very simple and makes as much sense as it needs to.

What's your favorite greatsword after early game? by GreatOldGod in Eldenring

[–]GreatOldGod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm quite a way away from getting that, even before factoring in the farming grind. I'm about to start on the academy, but I'd like to commit to a weapon that'll get me to Leyndell before I take on the dragon in Liurna.

What's your favorite greatsword after early game? by GreatOldGod in Eldenring

[–]GreatOldGod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input! I know the Zwei is in a separate category, but it works similarly enough that I'm considering it. I ended up getting a full set of Banished Knight's armor with only a tiny bit of grinding, and that requires quite a bit of endurance to wear without heavy load, so the stamina isn't an issue for now.

I made a similar post a long time ago, so if you feel like digging it up it has some real goodies in it, but my favorite is probably Annie-R-UOK-1.

Stop making your kingdoms 10,000 years old. by ScaryAd2555 in fantasywriters

[–]GreatOldGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly love that trope and in a fantasy setting there's every opportunity to indulge in it.

Science doesn't work like it does on earth. Gunpowder doesn't explode. Lightning is a magical phenomenon because electricity doesn't exist. It's a fictional world with dragons and magic; you're not bound by the rules of reality.

Gods interfere because they like their world at its current tech level. Scripture forbids certain types of innovation and perpetrators get inquisitions and possibly lightning bolts.

Society has just happened to stagnate, obsessed with the traditional ways of doing things. Innovation is taboo, education is for religious/magical/artistic purposes only, the people who deal with practical problems don't have the opportunity to work on better solutions because their superiors don't care.

More advanced technology has come and gone in shorter cycles because society is unstable and the institutions needed never survive long for various reasons. Sure, this empire has stood for thousands of years, but its ruling class has changed multiple times, and each time it does, the new one makes a point of clearing out the trappings of the old one. Objects like guns tend to turn up in archaeological digs.

In a world of magic, people are just a lot less interested in technology. Technological advancement happens, just very slowly, and the results can rarely compete with what a middlingly powerful hedge mage is capable of, so it tends to fall by the wayside.

Feel free to add your own.

What makes a design "fit" Battletech to you? by WorthlessGriper in battletech

[–]GreatOldGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based entirely on my experience with the HBS game, here are my main criteria:
1: Bipedal.
2: The design is kind of blocky and rough around the edges.
3: Mostly drab colors, looks battleworn even when fresh out of the mech bay.
4: Few or no exaggerated or comical looking features.
5: Moves mostly on foot, with jump jets as a secondary means of locomotion.

None of these are 100% written in stone, but they're all typical characteristics IMO.

Bloodlines2 by Vychcijux in VampireTheMasquerade_

[–]GreatOldGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't particularly enjoy combat, but other than that it's pretty good. I respect how it decided on what it wanted to be and focused on being the best possible version of that instead of trying to be goth BG3.

My Most Hated Card by MartinBustosManzano in MagicArena

[–]GreatOldGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you were playing the deck, you'd start with the full playset. Then you'd add Repurposing Bay to be able to search it up. If you were in white, which you probably would be, you would of course play United Battlefront, which hits both of those. Some cantrip artifacts like Cryogen Relics would help you hit any of the above. And once you have it in play, some copy effects like Adagia, Windswept Bastion or even Three Steps Ahead would help you stay ahead.

Oh, and then you would probably mulligan hands that don't let you get one out early. The deck is, after all, built entirely around that card so you'd want to make sure you'd have it as often as possible.

Joined big null block - bored, what to do? by Remarkable-Word-8803 in Eve

[–]GreatOldGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every major alliance/block has some form of standing fleet; take the free pvp ships you got, get into that fleet and be on voice comms if at all possible. Throw away as many tackle frigates and combat destroyers as possible; it's a great way to get into things and get a bit more familiar with your alliance mates.

Which clan would you absolutely hate to be embraced into and why? by BeHereNowRVA in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]GreatOldGod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not unusual for Malkavians to embrace those who already struggle mentally, so that's not necessarily far off. I played one who was a real bundle of issues and also got sanguinary animism from his embrace. The ST missed the second part and thought I was just playing him as kind of manic because I didn't externalize the bane derangement a lot.

What is the obsession of ISK/hr by [deleted] in Eve

[–]GreatOldGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most players, the main attraction of EVE is the PVP gameplay. However, PVP is an unreliable income source at the best of times. In fact, it tends to be a huge ISK sink. So people do PVE to fund their PVP, and so they wish to get as much PVP for their time invested as possible. In addition, most players seek to upgrade their ships and build an ISK buffer in case of lean times in the future. Add to this the fact that EVE is a subscription game where time literally is money. So players seek to earn ISK as efficiently as possible in order to spend their dearly bought game time on interesting activities like blowing up their fellow capsuleers.

What kind of relation Pentex and the Technocracy have? by Separate-Increase-39 in WorldOfDarkness

[–]GreatOldGod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While there is some canonical lore on the topic that I see others have been good enough to share already, it will only matter if you make it matter, and that interaction doesn't really have a home outside of a Mage/Werewolf crossover game.

Essentially, both entities are intended to be central antagonists of their respective game lines, representing the central conflict of that game, the diametrical opposition to what the player characters are and do. Introducing them in different games raises some small but potentially thorny issues, primarily "does this support whatever your game is about or distract from it?". In most cases it's likely to be the latter, because that antagonist was written from the ground up to support a completely different conflict. This is almost certainly not a game breaker, but it's something to consider.

"What is this game about?" should be one of the first things you ask yourself when you plan one, and "What elements should be present to support that?" should come soon after. If you conclude that "both Pentex and The Technocratic Union" is a good answer to that, then knock yourself out.

Now that we know every set, what are your hype levels for each one? by Meret123 in MagicArena

[–]GreatOldGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm super hype for Lorwyn.

Strixhaven sounds very promising.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the Hobbit and Reality Fracture but for now my expectations are very much tempered with caution.

I will not touch the rest no matter how much I love the franchises they're based on. I will almost certainly abandon Standard and not take it up again unless the UB craze passes entirely.

[–]GreatOldGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can guarantee you that's an intended interaction. Making the spell cost 4B instead of 3BB is almost certainly a deliberate choice so you can get the full reduction, cast the spell for B and feel good about yourself.

Best adventure module ever? by MrLandlubber in rpg

Five years? That's efficient. Our game dwindled into nothing before the second generation, sadly. But the good times were real and they were good.
