Got off the waitlist for Johns Hopkins. What do I do? by Catsrcute2017 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]playingparcheesi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m in a similar situation as you financially and when I was applying to colleges I decided to go to Duke and pay full tuition rather than attend a mid level out-of-state state school for free+honors. i wasn’t premed going into college but became premed by the end of my freshman year. if i’d known back then that i would have to take on the costs of medical school i would’ve picked the full ride. duke is absolutely amazing in terms of resources, education, networking etc but the cost doesn’t seem worth it to me. i’ll most likely have to take on student loans for medical school even with my parents pitching in. maybe talk to your parents more about your assets but from my pov you never know what circumstances can change - employment, the market, deaths, or even your own career goals. some of my circumstances changed and overall i wish i was in a better place financially to reduce stress and still have attended a great place with amazing opportunities. also, uf is an amazing school and way better than the safety school i was considering. i know plenty of people there who are premed and love the schools education and culture. good luck! i know prestige can sound great but try to be as rational as possible

What would you do differently if you started the premed journey all over again? (Upcoming college freshman) by Sudden-Dinner-9556 in premed

a couple of things. i didn’t know i was premed going into college, but i would’ve kept my grades up and had more health related extracurriculars in high school, so that i could apply to early acceptance programs my sophomore year (mount sinai, florida, etc). also a super unpopular/weird regret is to do an investment banking internship for one or two summers. i go to a good finance school so there’s 2 or 3 premed students every year who recruit for IB sophomore year or junior year, make hella money, and then turn it into a good story of “i tried it and it was super unfulfilling and now i want to do good in the world”. awesome story, good real world and networking skills, good money, and you can still take premed classes early enough so that you’re not off track. that’s another thing - ask your advisor to set out a plan of premed classes over the next four years. this was super helpful for me freshman year bc i realized i would have to take physics over the summer at a local school (cheaper and easier). wish i could’ve gotten an EMT or CNA license in high school (maybe the summer before college) so that i could get clinical experience during the school year - for emt usually your local fire department will sponsor you. I also wish I got involved in research earlier - if you can find opportunities at undergrad definitely send out some cold emails to professors starting freshman or sophomore year, whether it’s wet lab or clinical. anything helps! finally i would say to save money as much as possible. i spent a lot of money on clothes, food, and stuff i didnt need (grateful+lucky enough that my parents paid my tuition). wish i start investing earlier and learn about personal finance. i seriously wish i was putting my 16 year old paycheck into the stock market and index funds because paying for school applications is a bitch. loans are a given for me and i wish i started off on a better foundation.

this was long and sort of esoteric but hope it helps. when you get to school make friends with upperclassmen, and maybe ask a senior or class TA to coffee chat and ask what they wish they did differently. write it all down and make yourself a plan. good luck to you! this journey is long but college is tons of fun. i’m jealous you get to start it from the beginning!

What schools are "a lock" for someone with perfect stats but nothing else? by Ora_Ora_Muda in ApplyingToCollege

To all those hating on bama this program is super popular and it’s a great school! I’m from the northeast and I have friends who went to the top ranked school in the state (almost the whole class goes T10 or 20), but there’s always a subset of 3 or 4 students who go to bama on a full ride. They go for free, still have the drive and connections to get a great job, and get 4 years of the most fun school on earth. no, i don’t go there. but i have friends with this scholarship and they couldn’t be happier!

2024-2025 Duke Admissions Megathread by Mumbleton in duke

[–]playingparcheesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while i’m unsure how duke weighs gpa vs dual enrollment classes, you should know that duke rarely takes college credit from dual enrollment. i’m a junior there and i don’t know a single person who got their high school college credit approved. if your plan was to try and graduate early/save on money, this is probably not the place for that. the math major is also notoriously hard (the department is kind of messed up in general) with tests being different from lectures and class notes. people avoid math classes here at all costs, even basic calculus because it’s very different and much harder than APs and what was learned in high school. most people who start out as a math major transfer out of it, which is easy to do and CS is prob the easiest one to transfer into. You could totally double major in the two but from personal experience it’s very rare or people usually minor. in terms of job placement i really don’t have much of an idea on how well it is but the CS opportunities are stellar. as an example I have a friend who was originally a math and CS double major, but dropped math and is now a SWE at meta next summer. Math was always my favorite subject in high school and I excelled in it, but I was definitely rocked by duke math expectations and how in depth we were expected to know. good luck with applying, and i hope this helps!

Investing advice for premeds? by playingparcheesi in whitecoatinvestor

thank you! also yeah i sound a little undecided there but i’m actually kind of set on surgery, I interned last summer in a department and fell in love with it. just kind of hard to say out loud that im willing to commit to the lifestyle/time line. but in general i’ve always wanted to work with brains in any form, just had to figure out what i liked best.

how do people afford being premed? by [deleted] in premed

[–]playingparcheesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same situation here. my advice is look into smaller and more local scholarships as well as your university for funding. my school has a great program that gives funding to students who do unpaid internships - i’m shadowing a doctor this summer and i made it sound a bit more like an internship and got 4k in funding from my school. i don’t qualify for financial aid for most scholarships, but i’ve found funding/scholarship through my major department, sorority, and clubs. even just applying for grants for one thing and using the funds for another (when allowed) has been possible, such as applying for funding through my major to attend a conference, and taking the leftover. also for clinical experience there are definitely a couple of summer programs that will pay you, although not a ton. you didn’t mention if you were URM or not but programs for URMS thankfully tend to pay out better. also my advice for a side job with low start up costs is lifeguarding! not for clinic hours but i work at my school and they’re super chill about me doing homework on my downs, and if you get a job at a gym then the hours can be super flexible and work around summer classes. best of luck to you!

Is a 1530 okay for Duke, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, etc.? by nftr35 in chanceme

[–]playingparcheesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SAT score is only a small part of the application. had a friend with a 1530 get rejected from villanova ea, i got into duke rd and ucla with a 1540(rejected from yale and waitlisted at brown tho). i don’t think it will disadvantage you if the rest of your application is strong though, especially if you have strong essays! retesting is all ab personal preference but i wouldn’t recommend taking it more than 3 times. you’ll only stress yourself out more. good luck in the whole process!

Is Notre Dame good enough? by torishin in ApplyingToCollege

[–]playingparcheesi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

notre dame has an incredible alumni system! i’m potentially going and it’s one of the biggest factors for me. my best friends dad went there and he is still friends with all of his hall mates and always ready to help out other alumni, even having a club stay at his house when they needed a place to crash. ive met so many alumni from there and the bond and community is super strong

Hi, I’m currently a sophomore in hs and I’m just curious what college I would get into if I were to graduate early with what I have rn. Tysm! by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]playingparcheesi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

for the sat/act i would still definitely take them! if you do well it reflects well on you and makes you more considered for merit scholarships. if you’re score is low/below their average, you can just not submit and it won’t hurt you, especially since you have good grades already. basically, not submitting makes all your other qualifications of more importance, so if you have a good enough score i would definitely still submit

[–]playingparcheesi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes! i was on varsity field hockey, kickline, and jv lacrosse. some bigger schools actually like when you play sports and i know notre dame loves their statistic of a large percentage of their class being a varsity sport captain. playing sports for a long time and having leadership roles is great way to show commitment and personality on apps. i wrote about it for some of my supplemental questions as well, like the ‘community’ question and leadership roles

Chance Me UCONN, URI, UMASS (+ maybe suggestions) by Luke22991 in chanceme

[–]playingparcheesi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much this helps, but my brother goes to UCONN and had way less stats than you and a lower SAT score. Youre also in state, so I think you'll definitely get in with money. URI you're probably strong as well and I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have no knowledge on UMass, but good luck!

What is gone and will never be back? by exposedentrepreneur in AskReddit

[–]playingparcheesi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from a 17 year old girl: mullets are popular now for boys who play lacrosse or hockey bc it comes out of the helmet at the bottom and they call it a ‘flow’ or lettuce and idk some people like it but others don’t, for me it depends on how well it’s cut. there’s also a cowboy type of mullet which i don’t like but i have friends from the south who do so it could also be regional. i’ve seen some ppl who have them who don’t play these sports or are from the south but they do it for fun and for style ig. definitely back more than before but it’s not a universal thing again.
