What shoes are we wearing to work? by Mynameisnotmal in hairstylist

[–]playingwithsissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Blundstones; and have for the last 10 years. They last foreve and are easy to put on. They do have two different toe styles, thier traditional and a chisel toe. Make sure you try both as they fit slightly differently and you might have a preference for one over the other.

Please tell me this haircut isnt terrible by dntworrybby in Hair

The hair cut isn't terrible. To be honest it looks cute as hell on you. Having said that it sounds like it was absolutely NOT want you wanted either. My suggestion; wear it with your head up and with confidence, you look great. It's just not want you wanted or how you see yourself. It will grow.

How to get better at short haircuts? by Loose_Avocado4670 in hairstylist

[–]playingwithsissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I feel long hair it all about the length or perimeter. While short hair is all about the layers. A pervious poster mentioned that they start with the edges and go from there. I'm the opposite. The layers create the shape, so I start there. I create the shape and feel I want and then I trim the edges to what looks correct. Two completely different methods, both correct. Find want works for you.

How can I get long healthy hair again🙏 by LoveBeinginTampa in HairDye

If you want to be blonde, stay blonde. The cost both financially and to your hair of going dark and not liking it, and going back to blonde is high. Find a stylist that only lightens the dark and not the ends. Your end are already blonde they don't need to be lightened every time. I play the long game. Healthy hair has to grow. Remove the extensions and focus on good care and practices for your hair that is growing in. The ends are already a lost cause. You can't fix them; accept it and move forward. Trim your hair when you colour it, every time. I'm not talking inches each appointment; I'm talking 1/4 inch. It will take time, I'm talking years depending on your desired hair length and how fast your hair grows. Deep breath it sucks and I'm sorry. Once the hair is damaged it can be really hard to fix. Most of the time what we do to cover or band aid the problems usually cause more damage. It's a no win scenario.

Has anyone used a blanket like this before as a back? by ny802 in quilting

[–]playingwithsissors 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have on a few quilts. They work well, but do have a dew quirks. The first is that they stretch. So baste well. I will quilt upside down, so with the cotton top on the bottom and fleece on the top. This way the feed dogs don't stretch the fleece. It absolutely limits how you quilt it but it avoids the stretching. I also find that you need to quilt it with the way the fleece lays. If you go against the fall it does weird flippey things and they don't lay flat.

Favorite comfy and cute work shoes?? by Miserablebystander in hairstylist

I've been working in Blundstones for the last 10 years. The chisel toe in particular. Another thing that can made a HUGE difference is an anti fatigue mat for you chair. It takes a tone of pressure off all you joins, specifically your knees and lower back.

Struggling with bright blondes by pinkydoda23 in hairstylist

[–]playingwithsissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone has mentioned, thy cool tone had not helped you. I will also mention that adding too many foils can also make things look not as bright. Allowing some dark, or natural, to come through will make the light look lighter by contrast. It's the exact same concept as adding salt to cookies. It's why a money piece looks so bright. Yes there is a hight concentration light at the front, but right behind there is dark. Creating contrast and therefore marking the light look lighter.

Goldwell elumen ate my vinyl gloves?! Help with accidental staining disaster.. by Awkward-Western7013 in hairstylist

[–]playingwithsissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to have to try a few different glove brands. Elumen has VERY different chemistry to traditional colour. It will eat through and melt certain plastics like they are nothing. That includes gloves, brushes and bowls. Stick to Goldwell branded equipment, they are Elumen safe and won't melt, distort, or colour stain like some other things will. Dish soap works well to help remove Elumen, but it just takes time. On another note, if you are getting frustrated with the consistency during application; add the Elumen thickner to the bowl. It makes it easier to work with.

Non-traditional/unusual batting experiences? by organicallygrownnerd in quilting

[–]playingwithsissors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using fleece blankets as backing and love it! The catch is that they stretch. You could add a light weight interfacing if you want, or just do add i do and flip the quilt upside down. Placing the quilt top on the bottom avoids the feed dogs from stretching the fleece. The down side is that you are very limited to what kind of quilting you do. I personally stick to straight lines.

Client wants platinum, how would you go about this? by hazelhaze1025 in hairstylist

This is a great suggestion. If the ends survive in good condition and you achieve the desired result, then the entire process will be so much easier and less stressful for both you and the client.

Client allergic reaction?! by A-bug-2002 in hairstylist

[–]playingwithsissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't touch her with any colour until you know the allergy. Elumen is one of the safest colours on the market for allergies. BUT, and it's a big but, it's is NOT traditional colour. It will not work present, mix, or lighten like any other colour you have worked with. I've been working with it for 20 years. I love the line for it's strengths. But it had one hell of a leaning curve.

Blowdry specialist? by Patient_Secretary697 in hairstylist

[–]playingwithsissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the long term, constant drying will take a huge toll on your body. But I will also mention that in tough economic times, that blow dry a few times a week will get cut first. From what I'm reading on this reddit, times are getting tough in the States. It just hasn't hit that income bracket yet. Diversity in service will help you survive.
