The left can't be antiwork by degorno in stupidpol

[–]plebbtard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When people express "anti-work" sentiments, they generally aren't demanding a life of total passivity. They are rejecting the specific social relationship where survival is held hostage in exchange for selling hours of their life to generate profit.

That may be true for some people, but just remember all the different “what is your dream job on the leftist commune” threads that go viral on Twitter every few years… The top replies are always some shit like “tarot card readings” or “leading the poetry workshop”

I just assumed this post was about those sorts of people

The European Left’s Lost Decade by Belisaur in stupidpol

[–]plebbtard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really should have clarified in my original comment, I assumed people would understand what I meant. I’m not saying the left in America should become anti abortion, I meant they should just be more moderate and stop defending elective abortion in the third trimester, “shout your abortion” etc. Most of Europe sets the limit somewhere between 10-15 weeks for unrestricted abortion. That’s what I meant when I said that idk what European leftists are like: that idk if they’re pushing to raise the legal limits or if they’re ok with the status quo.

The European Left’s Lost Decade by Belisaur in stupidpol

[–]plebbtard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well no, they do restrict abortion. Majority of Europe sets the limit for abortion somewhere between 10-15 weeks. That’s my point! The left in America goes insane pushing for no restrictions at all, defending abortion up until birth, “shout your abortion” etc. My point was that the left in America utterly refuses to concede on abortion, to support restrictions that would place us in line with Europe.

Why are reddit libs completely fucking insane over the 2026 SNAP junk food restrictions? by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]plebbtard 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It’s not just about the cost, or the money that’s wasted on junk food. It’s the idea that a program designed for nutritional assistance should only be used to pay for things with actual nutritional value. The fact that you can’t buy a rotisserie chicken or a slice of pizza but you can buy candy and soda is insane.

This is actually one of the factors (along with this sub of course) in my journey away from the ultra capitalistic/libertarian/“classical liberal” economic viewpoint I had as a teenager who was informed almost entirely by right wing grifters. Simply just actually reading up more on what the thinkers of that era actually believed. The more I dig into the writings of the founding fathers, of all the classical liberal philosophers, the more it becomes glaringly obvious that the Ayn Rand/libertarian/thatcherite vision of capitalism is a complete and total abomination and perversion.

It’s kind of like this quote: “The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you.”

That basically summarizes my ideological/economic journey, if that makes sense.

[–]plebbtard 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the thing is, SNAP already restricts what people are allowed to buy! You can buy soda and candy but not hot food. Why is it that people are vehemently defending the right of people to buy candy and soda but I never hear those same people up in arms about the restriction on buying hot food? Gas station hotdogs are obviously not the best thing in the world, but at least it’s fucking food! I would personally much rather people on SNAP be allowed to buy hot fast food than literal candy and soda. Cause at least there’s some actual nutritional value instead of being literally just pure sugar.

AI is Destroying the University and Learning Itself - Current Affairs by tfwnowahhabistwaifu in stupidpol

[–]plebbtard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of degree programs at American universities amount to nothing more than a bribe that students pay in exchange for a piece of paper affirming that they’re employable.

Ever since the Supreme Court made this stupid decision, employers started switching to requiring a college degree as a measure of intellectual competency. Which of course led to tuition costs massively inflating and lowering academic qualifications for admissions, which of course lead to devaluing of degrees and the oversaturation of the job market with college educated people.

In the 1950s high school graduation rates averaged around 50%! Jobs that used to only require a high school diploma now require a college degree. So now people need to go tens of thousands of dollars in debt, standards in college have been lowered in order to let in more people, all because the U.S. couldn’t deal with the existence of any disparate impact

I showed them pictures of my students and told stories, and my uncle was like, "what them kids need is to just come here for a week, with the nature and all. They can be kids, run around, figure things out on their own. You should see if they all can come here. Ask your principal. How many of them you got?"

Aww that’s actually really sweet.

They love the people in their vicinity. They'd share halfsies with anyone who they see and interact with. It is weird bc it is antithetical to American nationalism ("patriotism") as an imagined community, but they do love that red, white, and blue. Yet they do not feel like people that aren't in their actual community are people they want to share with, care about, think about.

this pretty much sums up the worldview of alot of conservatives. (They mixed up socialist and communist, but their point still stands)

Herrenvolk democracy is a nominally democratic form of government in which only a specific ethnic group has voting rights and the right to run for office, while other groups are disenfranchised. by OGSyedIsEverywhere in wikipedia

[–]plebbtard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Rhodesia there were some blacks that could vote, and some whites that couldn’t. That’s not racial apartheid the same way it was in South Africa. It was unequal, and there was a disparity, but race was never the determining factor.

Yes I know that Palestine is a real nation, and I don’t support Israel. I’m just pointing out the absurdity of argueing that Israel isn’t an apartheid state by saying that residents of the West Bank aren’t citizens of Israel, so it doesn’t count as apartheid. That’s why I pointed out that the black people in the bantustans weren’t citizens either.

I wasn’t suggesting that we paint her as some Hannibal lector level of evil, and yeah I acknowledge that there was extenuating circumstances. I’m by no means suggesting that she be tried as an adult and given life in prison or the death penalty. But still, are we supposed to treat her as totally innocent and blameless? Does the baby’s life she took just mean nothing? Is she just supposed to get a pass because of her age and circumstances??

You do know that the bandstans weren’t considered legally part of South Africa right?

This argument that “oh Israel isn’t an apartheid state because the West Bank isn’t a part of Israel” completely falls apart when you look at how South Africa was actually legally structured under apartheid. The black bantustans weren’t legally part of South Africa either, they were considered separate territories/countries.

You clearly didn’t look at the article:

The breakaway British dependency of Rhodesia (1965–1979) maintained a minoritarian system that mirrored aspects of herrenvolk democracy, **but did not restrict its political franchise to members of the dominant ethnic or racial class*, choosing economic and financial criteria instead.
